National Assembly Denies Reports Of Tinubu Presenting 2025 Budget On Wednesday

The National Assembly has refuted reports claiming that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be presenting the 2025 Budget proposal to a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday, November 27, 2024.

A statement issued by the National Assembly’s Director of Information, Audu Bullah Biallah, on behalf of the Secretary of Research and Information, clarified that the 2024-2026 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF&FSP) had not yet been approved by both chambers of the National Assembly.

Approval of the MTEF&FSP is a prerequisite for the official presentation of the 2025 budget.

The statement also addressed false claims attributed to Dr. Ali Barde Umoru, the Secretary, Research and Information, warning against spreading such misinformation.

The National Assembly emphasized that any inquiries or clarifications on official matters should be made through the proper communication channels.

The Secretary further urged the public to disregard the inaccurate reports and refrain from misleading information.

Ebonyi Governor Suspends Two Commissioners, Three Health Officials

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has announced the suspension of two commissioners, Francis Ori (Housing and Urban Development) and Moses Ekuma (Health), for three months due to allegations of gross misconduct and neglect of duty.

The decision was revealed by the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Jude Chikadibia, during a press briefing on Tuesday.

He explained that the suspensions were part of resolutions made at the state executive council meeting held on Monday.

In addition to the two commissioners, the Governor also suspended three senior officials in the Ministry of Health: Dr. Lawrence Ezeoke, Permanent Secretary; Dr. Philip Ovuoba, Executive Secretary of the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency; and Dr. Divine Igwe, Executive Secretary of the Ebonyi State Health Insurance Agency.

Chikadibia noted that these suspensions were due to “gross misconduct and dereliction of duties” on the part of the affected officials.

As a result, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Primary Health will take charge of the Ministry of Health during the period of suspension.

The suspended officials have been ordered to hand over all government assets, including vehicles, to the Secretary to the Government by Monday.

This move follows recent calls by Governor Nwifuru for the prosecution of Mr. Ndukwe Ayansi and five others for allegedly diverting materials intended for the Ministry of Health.

It is reported that the five accused individuals have been arrested and will face charges in court soon.

Gov. Mbah Presents 2025 Budget Of N971bn To Enugu Assembly

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has presented a record-breaking budget of N971 billion for the 2025 fiscal year to the State House of Assembly.

Dubbed the “Budget of Exponential Growth and Inclusive Prosperity,” the proposal aims to accelerate economic development, with an emphasis on education, infrastructure, and poverty eradication.

The proposed budget includes N837.9 billion for Capital Expenditure (86% of the total budget) and N133.1 billion for Recurrent Expenditure (14% of the budget).

This marks a significant increase from the 2024 budget of N521.5 billion, which consisted of N414.3 billion for Capital Expenditure and N107.2 billion for Recurrent Expenditure.

Mbah emphasized the importance of investing in education, which has received a lion’s share of N320.6 billion, over 33% of the total budget for the second consecutive year.

He noted that education is key to the state’s economic growth and poverty alleviation efforts.

The budget also prioritizes critical infrastructure, such as roads, water supply, energy, and public service modernization, to create a robust foundation for sustainable development.

The governor highlighted the impressive growth in the state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which surged from N37.4 billion in 2023 to N144.7 billion in September 2024, a 286.2% increase.

This surge is part of the administration’s strategy to reduce dependency on federal allocations and increase local revenue generation.

Mbah further outlined the revenue sources for the 2025 budget, with projected recurrent revenues totaling N692.2 billion.

This includes N509.9 billion from IGR, N48.7 billion from statutory revenue, and N74.9 billion from VAT. The remaining N559 billion in recurrent revenues will be channeled into capital development.

In terms of capital spending, N462 billion will be allocated to the economic sector, which represents 55.1% of the Capital Expenditure, while N345.7 billion (41.2%) will go to the social sector.

The education sector continues to receive the largest share of N320.6 billion to support the governor’s ambition to develop a knowledge-based economy.

Other sectors set to receive significant funding include healthcare, with N45.8 billion earmarked for improving the state’s health services; roads and infrastructure, with N213.1 billion to be spent on key roads across the state; and agriculture, with N82.3 billion dedicated to food production and agro-industrialization.

The transport sector will also see investments, with N41.1 billion allocated for expanding Enugu Air and improving transportation services, including the concessioning of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport and the construction of an international cargo terminal.

The governor also shared an update on the performance of the 2024 budget, noting that the state had achieved an 88% budget performance as of October 2024.

He expressed confidence that the state’s IGR would exceed N200 billion by the end of the year.

The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, assured the governor of the Assembly’s commitment to fast-tracking the passage of the budget to sustain the administration’s development plans.

Mbah remains determined to propel Enugu to a top-three GDP ranking nationally, focusing on inclusive growth and economic self-sufficiency, despite the challenging economic landscape across Nigeria.

‘You’ll Pay Huge Price For Allowing Illegal Migrants Into US’ – Trump Vows Retaliation Against Canada, Mexico

Donald Trump, the President-elect, announced plans on Monday to impose heavy tariffs on goods coming from Mexico and Canada, signaling his intention to punish these countries for what he described as a growing crisis of illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, declaring that on his first day in office, he would sign an executive order imposing a 25% tariff on all imports from Mexico and Canada.

He claimed that both countries were allowing drugs, particularly fentanyl, and illegal immigrants to flood into the United States, exacerbating crime levels in the country.

“This Tariff will stay in effect until Drugs, particularly Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country !” Trump wrote, adding that both Mexico and Canada had the means to address the issue but had failed to do so.

He further warned that if they did not act, they would face serious consequences.

In a separate post, Trump also stated that he would add a 10% tariff on Chinese imports, citing his frustrations with China’s failure to address the flow of drugs, particularly fentanyl, into the U.S.

Despite earlier talks with Chinese representatives, Trump claimed that China had not followed through on its promise to punish drug traffickers severely.

Throughout his campaign, Trump had vowed to crack down on illegal migration from the southern border and to reduce the flow of illicit drugs.

He also suggested declaring a national emergency and deploying military forces to deport immigrants living unlawfully in the U.S.

Although Trump’s rhetoric about rising crime rates was stark, FBI data from September revealed that violent crime in the U.S. had decreased for the third consecutive year, including reductions in murder, rape, and assault.

Economists, however, have raised concerns about the potential economic consequences of Trump’s tariff strategy.

They warn that such tariffs could lead to higher prices for consumers, increased inflation, and higher interest rates.

Tariffs are essentially taxes imposed on foreign goods entering the U.S., and experts caution that they could harm the economy by disrupting trade relations and raising the cost of goods for American consumers.

2027: Mega Alliance Against Tinubu Underway As APGA, LP, PDP, CUPP, NCFront Reveal Plan To Merge

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, opposition parties in Nigeria are taking significant steps toward forming a formidable alliance aimed at challenging President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term.

The coalition, referred to as the “mother of all opposition alliances,” seeks to unite political forces to counter the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leadership.

Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, a member of the House of Representatives from Imo State, revealed that the opposition would soon announce the formation of what is being called a “granite coalition,” which could include or exclude the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Ugochinyere criticized the PDP for failing to provide strong leadership and opposition at a time when the country is grappling with numerous challenges, calling for a reorganization of the party’s structure to strengthen its resolve against the APC.

Otunba Segun Showunmi, a former spokesperson for the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, launched a new initiative called the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), also known as “The Alternative.”

This coalition is aimed at revitalizing Nigeria’s democracy by addressing issues such as the erosion of electoral integrity, lack of clear ideological direction among political parties, and declining voter trust.

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), an umbrella group of opposition parties, endorsed the initiative, with its National Secretary, Chief Peter Ameh, asserting that the CUPP would work closely with like-minded groups to form a strong, unified front capable of challenging Tinubu’s administration.

He stressed the importance of a credible opposition in the face of Nigeria’s economic challenges, insecurity, and corruption.

The CUPP’s goal is clear: to oust the APC from power and restore good governance.

Chief Chekwas Okorie, founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), predicted that political realignments would intensify by mid-2025, although APGA itself would not likely merge with other parties.

Instead, Okorie suggested that his party would focus on constructive engagement and a progressive coalition government.

He emphasized that APGA is committed to national unity and development, with a focus on equity and justice for all citizens.

The National Consultative Front (NCFront), a political coalition that seeks to promote democracy in Nigeria, has also expressed its commitment to driving the formation of a mega opposition alliance.

Mallam Hamisu Santuraki, spokesperson for NCFront, stated that the group is working to bring together credible political leaders from across Nigeria’s opposition parties, including the APC, PDP, Labour Party (LP), and others.

This initiative was officially launched on February 6, 2024, aligning with the birthday of Prof. Pat Utomi, a prominent opposition leader and chair of the Fusion Committee, which includes key figures from various parties.

The Labour Party (LP) has also expressed confidence in its ability to play a key role in the 2027 elections, building on the success it saw in the 2023 elections.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, reiterated LP’s willingness to collaborate with other opposition forces in order to replace the APC and restore governance that works for Nigeria’s citizens.

As the 2027 race approaches, the formation of a unified opposition alliance could be crucial in altering the political dynamics of the country.

Senator Abaribe Hails Arrest Of Simon Ekpa

Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, representing Abia South, has expressed support for the arrest of Simon Ekpa, a separatist agitator detained in Finland.

Abaribe described the arrest as a positive development that could deter violent elements in the Southeast from continuing their disruptive activities.

Speaking in an interview with Channels TV, Abaribe condemned Ekpa and his followers for using the Biafra cause as a cover to commit crimes in the region.

He emphasized that Ekpa, who previously referred to himself as a “content creator,” should not be regarded as a serious advocate for Biafra, noting that his actions were contrary to the ideals of the Igbo people.

Abaribe further stated, “Ekpa’s activities in the Southeast are wrong and do not align with the values of Ndigbo.

The original call for a peaceful referendum by IPOB has been hijacked by criminals who use the movement for violence and destruction.”

The senator reiterated his belief that Ekpa’s arrest serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by those using the Biafra cause for violent purposes.

Lagos 2025 Budget Of N3.5 Trillion Passes Second Reading

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday debated the 2025 appropriation bill totaling N3.005 trillion, which was presented to lawmakers by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu last Thursday.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who led the plenary session, referred the bill to a joint committee on appropriation and finance for further scrutiny, with a mandate to report back within a month.

Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh, Chairman of the House Committee on Budget and Economic Planning, gave an overview of the proposed budget, breaking down its various components.

While he expressed concerns about the projected N408 billion deficit financing, Olumoh emphasized the importance of using loans responsibly and suggested exploring alternative funding options, such as Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), to ensure sustainability and avoid over-reliance on borrowing.

He urged his colleagues to carefully examine the budget to prevent wasteful spending, though he acknowledged the government’s positive intentions.

Deputy Majority Leader, Hon. Adedamola Richard Kasumu, also called for a thorough review of the budget to allow for a proper comparative analysis of its feasibility.

Hon. Desmond Elliot raised concerns about the lack of food security measures in the proposal, urging the inclusion of initiatives to address citizens’ needs.

Governor Sanwo-Olu assured the lawmakers that the budget was designed with a 59% focus on capital expenditure and 41% on recurrent expenditure, with deficit financing planned through both external and internal loans as well as bonds.

Investigation Into Civil Servants Receiving Salaries After Relocating Abroad Is Ongoing – FG Assures

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, has confirmed that the ongoing investigation into civil servants still drawing salaries after relocating abroad is progressing as planned.

Speaking at a briefing in Abuja on Monday to mark her first 100 days in office, Walson-Jack assured that the government was committed to rooting out the practice.

She emphasized that the investigation, initiated after the discovery of civil servants receiving pay while abroad, is being conducted through the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS), which tracks government employees’ payroll data.

This probe follows a directive from President Bola Tinubu in June 2024, ordering sanctions for civil servants found guilty of continuing to receive salaries after relocating.

The President also instructed that those in supervisory roles who were complicit in the fraudulent activities should be held accountable.

In her remarks, Walson-Jack noted that some civil servants had already voluntarily resigned, while others were honorably retiring to avoid scrutiny.

She stated that the verification process was ongoing, with the aim to ensure that no civil servant continues to draw a salary while living abroad without proper authorization.

“We are still scrutinizing using IPPIS to identify who is here and who is not,” she said, adding that the process would be continuous.

The issue was first raised by former HCSF Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, who confirmed that efforts were being made to track those still on the payroll despite relocating.

In addition to the probe, Walson-Jack highlighted the achievements of her office in her first 100 days, including a focus on improving service delivery within the civil service.

She also spoke about collaboration with the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) to address the rising issue of job racketeering.

Walson-Jack acknowledged the support from her team and the “Super Permanent Secretaries” for making her transition into office smooth.

She also revealed that her office is working on a comprehensive on-boarding package for new civil servants to ensure they feel welcome and supported in their roles.
