Gov. Mbah Celebrates ESUT’s Growth At 20th Convocation, Announces New Innovations, Funding Initiatives

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has praised the rapid transformation of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), which is regaining its status as a center of excellence.

Speaking at the university’s 20th Convocation Ceremony held at Agbani, Mbah highlighted the significant progress the institution has made and the plans for further development.

During the ceremony, Governor Mbah was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration and Corporate Governance in recognition of his contributions to education and good governance.

He also announced his administration’s plans to establish a Centre for Experiential Learning at ESUT, aimed at fostering innovation among students and faculty.

In addition, Mbah disclosed that he had secured a N50 million grant for Professor Cyprian Mgbachi, a local inventor known for developing a cooking stove-powered cellphone battery charger, to further enhance his technology.

Mbah also pledged ongoing support for other innovative projects within the university.

The Vice Chancellor of ESUT, Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie, announced that a total of 8,437 students had graduated with various degrees, including First Degrees, Postgraduate Diplomas, Master’s Degrees, and Doctorates. Nine graduates earned First Class honors.

The Vice Chancellor also emphasized that 97% of the university’s programs have been fully accredited, thanks to significant investments from Mbah’s administration in the education sector.

Governor Mbah remarked on the university’s commitment to technological advancement, noting the diverse array of products displayed at the exhibition pavilion, ranging from biotechnology to pharmacology.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to transforming higher education in the state by implementing a new policy that mandates Experiential Learning across all state-owned tertiary institutions in Enugu.

This policy will influence the planning, curriculum, and assessment frameworks at these institutions.

As part of the ongoing efforts to expand ESUT, Mbah announced that his administration had invested over N1.6 billion in infrastructural development to alleviate space constraints at the university’s Park Lane campus.

The governor also outlined several other initiatives, including funding for the renovation of key facilities at the College of Medicine, procurement of essential equipment for various health-related programs, and major interventions in the fields of nursing, pharmacy, and biomedical engineering.

In his address to the graduates, Mbah encouraged them to remain committed to excellence and to leverage technology in their careers, while maintaining strong connections with the university.

He emphasized that ESUT would continue to play a crucial role in supplying skilled professionals in areas critical to the state’s development, such as health, engineering, ICT, and agriculture.

At the convocation, the Governor was also joined by Austrian investor Mr. Bernd Bergmair, who was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration for his proven integrity and business achievements.

This marks the first time that ESUT has conferred an honorary doctorate on a foreign national.

The ceremony also celebrated the university’s best-performing students. Osita Tracy Ezinne from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences emerged as the overall best graduate with a CGPA of 4.88, followed by Chukwudebe Pearl Ewere and Odoeme Ogechi Eunice, who secured second and third positions, respectively.

In recognition of Professor Mgbachi’s groundbreaking invention, Mr. Bergmair contributed an additional N52 million to the N50 million already pledged by the state government, bringing the total support for the inventor to N102 million.

Hisbah To Resume Raids On Betting Shops Following Supreme Court Ruling

The Islamic morality police, known as the Hisbah, in Kano State have announced plans to resume their crackdown on betting shops following a recent ruling by Nigeria’s Supreme Court on gambling laws.

The Supreme Court overturned a 2005 law that had established the National Lottery Commission and legalized sports betting and gambling in the country.

The court’s decision clarified that the regulation of gambling is now under the jurisdiction of state governments rather than the federal government.

Kano State, one of 12 Nigerian states that implement Islamic Sharia law alongside federal law, has always maintained a strict stance against gambling.

Abba Sufi, the Director-General of Kano’s Hisbah, told AFP, “We will resume our crackdown on betting shops with greater resolve, as betting remains illegal under Kano State’s Sharia law.”

Sufi expressed that the court ruling settled the dispute over who has the authority to regulate gambling in Nigeria, emphasizing that the state had long opposed the national lottery law because it legitimized gambling, which is forbidden in Islam.

The Hisbah’s campaign against betting has been spurred by concerns from parents about children becoming addicted to gambling through football betting.

“The tough economic conditions are driving more people into football betting in hopes of making quick money, which often leads to addiction,” Sufi said.

The Hisbah, responsible for enforcing Sharia law in Kano, had conducted raids on numerous betting shops in the city last month, shutting down several for promoting gambling, which they consider a violation of Sharia law.

However, the raids were temporarily halted after the National Lottery Commission objected, arguing that betting on football was legal under the 2005 Lottery Act.

With the Supreme Court’s ruling, the Hisbah has resumed its efforts to close down betting establishments across Kano.

Gunmen Abduct Journalist’s Relatives, Demand N50 Million Ransom

Gunmen abducted three relatives of former Daily Trust Editor, Malam Ahmed Tahir Ajobe, on Thursday evening in Kogi State.

The victims, which include a male and two females—one of whom is Mr. Ajobe’s immediate younger sister, Halimtu-Sadiya Tahir—were taken while returning from a market in Awo, located in Ankpa Local Government Area.

They were abducted along the poorly maintained Ankpa-Adoka-Markudi road.

This incident occurred just days after Mr. Ajobe’s mother, Malama Aishetu Tahir, passed away following a prolonged illness.

The victims were reportedly on their way to buy items for the 7-day memorial prayers for the late mother when they were kidnapped.

While Mr. Ajobe could not be reached for immediate comment, a family friend confirmed that the kidnappers had contacted the family on Friday, demanding a ransom of N50 million for the release of the victims.

The source explained, “Three of Ajobe’s family members were kidnapped around 3 p.m. on Thursday. The kidnappers made contact on Friday afternoon, asking for N50 million.” The friend, however, could not provide details on the ongoing negotiations, noting, “I had to leave for an emergency in Lokoja, so I am not sure what the family is offering. No payment has been made yet, and the victims are still in captivity.”

Efforts to get a statement from Kogi State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP William Ayah, were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to phone calls from our correspondent.

NATO Secretary General, Trump In Talks Over Global Security

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte met with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in Palm Beach, Florida, on Friday to discuss pressing global security challenges, according to a statement from NATO spokeswoman Farah Dakhlallah.

The talks focused on the security concerns currently facing the NATO alliance.

Rutte, who is the former prime minister of the Netherlands, had expressed interest in meeting with Trump shortly after his re-election on November 5 to address growing international tensions, particularly the strengthening ties between North Korea and Russia.

During his first term, Trump had been vocal in urging European allies to increase their defense spending and questioned the commitment of the U.S. to NATO.

His return to the presidency has raised concerns among European leaders, particularly over the future of U.S. military support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.

NATO members see continued support for Ukraine as vital to both European and U.S. security.

At a recent European leaders’ summit in Budapest, Rutte highlighted the increasing cooperation between Russia, North Korea, Iran, and China, warning that this alliance posed significant security threats to both the U.S. and Europe.

He pointed out that Russia was supplying technology to North Korea, which he argued could jeopardize security on both the U.S. mainland and in continental Europe.

Rutte expressed optimism about his meeting with Trump, noting that the discussions would focus on how NATO can address these emerging threats in a unified manner.

FG Makes U-Turn, Says Rivers Will Continue To Receive Allocation

The Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) has confirmed that Rivers State will continue to receive its federal allocations, despite ongoing legal challenges regarding the state’s financial entitlements.

The OAGF reassured that it would comply with all court orders, including adhering to any notices of appeal.

In a statement made on Friday, Bawa Mokwa, the Director of Press and Public Relations at OAGF, explained that, given the notice of appeal filed by Rivers State, the legal process takes precedence.

“We will comply with court orders,” Mokwa stated, emphasizing that the notice of appeal effectively overrides the initial court ruling, ensuring that Rivers will continue to receive payments.

This assurance follows a controversial ruling by the Federal High Court on October 30, 2024, which directed the Central Bank of Nigeria to withhold future monthly allocations to Rivers State.

The court’s decision was based on Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s presentation of the 2024 budget to a House of Assembly with only four members, which the court declared unconstitutional.

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, in delivering the judgment, stated that the state’s financial activities since January 2024 had been based on an illegitimate budget, labeling the situation a “constitutional aberration.”

The court raised concerns about the composition of the Rivers State House of Assembly, questioning its legal authority to approve the state’s budget.

It was ruled that the Governor’s actions, bypassing constitutional requirements for a fully constituted Assembly, violated sections of the Nigerian Constitution and were an affront to the rule of law.

The judgment followed a suit filed by a faction of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule, who challenged the legitimacy of the four-member Assembly backed by Governor Fubara.

The Amaewhule faction had earlier in the year declared that the state should stop all expenditures until the governor presented a legitimate budget to a properly constituted Assembly.

Despite the ruling, the Rivers State Government immediately filed an appeal against the judgment, and the state’s Information Commissioner, Joseph Johnson, expressed confidence that the Appeal Court would overturn the decision.

He described the court’s ruling as unfounded, asserting that the governor’s legal team was optimistic about the outcome of the appeal.

In light of the ongoing legal proceedings, the OAGF has confirmed that the federal allocations to Rivers State will continue, pending the final resolution of the matter in court.

Ebonyi Govt Begins Data Collection Of Underage Beggars, Hawkers, Offers Skills Training For Adults

The Ebonyi State Government has initiated a data collection exercise targeting beggars and hawkers, with a particular focus on underage individuals, within the Abakaliki metropolis.

The state’s Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Felicia Nwankpuma, announced the move on Friday during a road walk aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of street begging, underage hawking, loitering, and human trafficking.

The event took place within Abakaliki.

Nwankpuma condemned the practice of child hawking and begging, particularly during school hours, describing it as a form of child labor.

She explained that the data collection effort would help ensure that underage individuals are reintegrated into the educational system.

Additionally, she revealed that adult beggars would be provided with skills training and empowerment opportunities.

“We have made efforts to offer some of them the chance to acquire skills, and once they complete the training, we will empower them,” the commissioner stated.

Nwankpuma also highlighted that the ministry is working with the state Ministry of Health and the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, to provide treatment for mentally ill individuals on the streets.

“We will begin with four people, monitor their progress, and gradually extend the treatment to others, as some are not fully mentally deranged but rather suffering from depression,” she added.

The commissioner emphasized that the campaign would be conducted in partnership with traditional rulers, community leaders, and other key stakeholders to identify and support vulnerable individuals effectively.
