President Tinubu Returns To Nigeria After Joint Arab-Islamic Summit

President Bola Tinubu has returned to Abuja following his participation in the Joint Arab-Islamic Summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Tinubu arrived at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, at around 8 pm on Tuesday, where he was welcomed by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, along with key ministers and security officials.

The summit, hosted by King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, took place on Monday and centered on pressing issues in the Middle East.

During the event, President Tinubu addressed the ongoing Israel-Palestinian conflict, reaffirming Nigeria’s call for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

He emphasized the importance of reviving the two-state solution as a pathway to lasting peace, stressing that both Israelis and Palestinians must have the right to self-determination and peace.

The president also expressed deep concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and urged for a more substantial international effort to address the region’s plight.

Tinubu warned that mere condemnations of the conflict would not suffice, noting that the situation in Palestine had persisted for far too long without a meaningful resolution.

He called on all parties to adhere to principles of proportionality and to uphold the basic rights of civilians, in line with international legal standards.

The Nigerian president also reflected on the profound historical impact of the conflict, noting that its consequences extend far beyond the region, influencing global divisions.

In his remarks, President Tinubu commended King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for hosting the summit, calling it a crucial step toward revitalizing diplomatic efforts for peace.

He assured the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) that Nigeria, with its own experiences, would continue to support international initiatives aimed at promoting peace and stability in the Middle East.

Tinubu was accompanied by several high-ranking officials, including Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser; Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation; and Mohammed Mohammed, Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency.

Archbishop Of Canterbury, Justin Welby Resigns

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, resigned on Tuesday following the release of an independent review that revealed the Church of England’s failure to address decades of abuse by British lawyer John Smyth.

The review exposed how senior church leaders, including Welby, had covered up the abuse of over 100 boys and young men in the 1970s and 1980s.

Smyth, who led Christian summer camps in the UK and abroad, was found to have sexually abused his victims over many years.

Despite repeated attempts by individuals to bring Smyth’s actions to light, the Church failed to take meaningful action, allowing the abuse to continue unchecked.

Smyth, who passed away in South Africa in 2018 without facing legal consequences, was able to continue his abuse both in the UK and internationally due to the Church’s inaction.

In a statement announcing his resignation, Welby expressed deep regret over the Church’s failures, calling the situation a source of “long felt and profound shame.”

He admitted that he first learned of the abuse allegations in 2013, shortly after becoming Archbishop, but acknowledged that his response had been inadequate.

Welby stated, “For nearly 12 years, I have struggled to introduce improvements. It is for others to judge what has been done.”

The Archbishop’s resignation followed increasing calls for accountability from victims and church leaders.

The Bishop of Newcastle, Helen-Ann Hartley, noted that many were questioning the Church of England’s ability to protect its members, stating, “Can we really trust the Church of England to keep us safe? And I think the answer at the moment is ‘no.’”

One of Smyth’s victims, Andrew Morse, who had been abused as a teenager, called for Welby’s resignation.

He criticized the Archbishop for his failure to act decisively in 2013, suggesting that prompt action could have prevented further abuse.

“Justin Welby’s admission that he didn’t do enough, that he wasn’t rigorous… confirms to me that he, along with many other Anglican leaders, were part of a cover-up,” Morse told the BBC.

Welby’s resignation casts a shadow over his tenure, which included officiating at significant events such as the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and delivering the sermon at Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral.

The scandal has put the Church of England under intense scrutiny, forcing it to confront its troubled history with abuse and the widespread erosion of trust among its followers.

In his statement, Welby expressed sorrow for the pain caused to victims, acknowledging that the Church had failed to protect those under its care.

“I am so sorry that in places where these young men and boys should have felt safe, they were subjected to physical, sexual, psychological, and spiritual abuse,” he said.

U.S Court Re-issues Arrest Warrant For Air Peace CEO, Onyema

A U.S federal court has renewed an arrest warrant for Allen Onyema, the Chairman and CEO of Air Peace, over an ongoing $20 million fraud case.

The warrant was reissued on October 9, 2024, by the U.S. District Court for Northern Georgia, Atlanta, following the addition of new charges to the case.

Onyema, alongside his co-defendant, Ejiroghene Eghagha (the airline’s Chief of Administration and Finance), is now facing an expanded list of charges, including obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice, in addition to 36 earlier counts related to conspiracy, money laundering, bank fraud, credit application fraud, and identity theft.

This brings the total number of charges against the two men to 38.

The new charges stem from allegations that Onyema and Eghagha attempted to obstruct a previous investigation into their financial dealings.

The two men are accused of submitting false documents to the U.S. government to end the investigation into their alleged fraudulent activities, which include moving large sums of money from Nigeria to the U.S. between 2017 and 2018, under the guise of aircraft purchases.

In response to the charges, Air Peace has maintained that Onyema and Eghagha are innocent and that the latest legal developments will not disrupt the airline’s operations.

The company emphasized that the case is ongoing and that Onyema and his legal team are cooperating fully with the authorities.

This is not the first time Onyema and Eghagha have been targeted by U.S. prosecutors.

In 2019, the court issued an arrest warrant against both men, and U.S. prosecutors allege that they used Springfield Aviation, a company owned by Onyema, to facilitate the fraudulent transfer of funds under the pretense of buying aircraft for Air Peace.

The U.S. government claims the aircraft referenced in the transactions were never owned or sold by Springfield Aviation, and that the money was funneled through various accounts, with Onyema allegedly transferring $15 million from Springfield Aviation’s accounts to his personal account in 27 separate transactions in 2017.

Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Air Peace reassured the public that Onyema’s legal troubles would not impact the airline’s daily operations.

The airline remains confident that Onyema and Eghagha will be exonerated, maintaining their commitment to providing reliable and safe services to their passengers.

Corrupt Contractors Responsible For Frequent National Grid Collapse – EFCC

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has identified corrupt contractors as a major factor contributing to the frequent collapses of Nigeria’s national power grid.

According to EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, the use of substandard electrical materials by contractors in the power sector is significantly undermining the country’s power infrastructure.

Olukoyede made these remarks on Tuesday during a visit by the House Committee on Anti-Corruption and Financial Crimes to the EFCC’s headquarters in Abuja.

The EFCC’s investigation has uncovered that contractors awarded contracts to supply electricity equipment often opt for inferior materials, a practice that has led to frequent equipment failures and power outages.

Olukoyede explained that instead of using quality materials, such as 9.0 gauge cables, contractors frequently use cheaper 5.0 gauge cables, resulting in power system failures.

This, he said, is a key reason behind the recurring collapses of the national grid, which has plunged large parts of the country into darkness.

This year alone, Nigeria’s national grid has collapsed 10 times, affecting regions such as the northern states, where over 17 states were left without power for more than a week due to attacks on electricity infrastructure.

While the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has attributed the grid failures to outdated infrastructure, Olukoyede highlighted that corruption and substandard materials play a crucial role in exacerbating the issue.

The EFCC Chairman also expressed concern over the country’s poor record in implementing capital projects.

Olukoyede revealed that in the past 15 to 20 years, Nigeria has only successfully executed less than 20% of its capital projects.

He stressed that such inefficiency in project execution hampers the nation’s growth and infrastructural development.

To address this, Olukoyede called for greater collaboration with the National Assembly to improve capital project implementation, aiming for at least 50% completion in the coming year.

He emphasized that achieving even half of the planned capital projects would represent significant progress for the country.

The EFCC is focusing its efforts on tackling corruption in the power sector and improving the execution of capital projects as part of its mandate to support Nigeria’s development.

Olukoyede urged the National Assembly to assist the commission in overcoming these challenges, which he believes are crucial to the nation’s progress.

New Edo Governor, Deputy Sworn In

Senator Monday Okpebholo was officially sworn in as the new Governor of Edo State on Friday, following his victory in the September 21 governorship election.

Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC), triumphed over the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Barr. Asue Ighodalo, and Barr. Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party.

During the ceremony, Hon. Denise Idahosa was also sworn in as the Deputy Governor of Edo State.

The oath of office for both leaders was administered by the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okongbowa, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima led the Federal Government delegation to the event, accompanied by several APC governors, including Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Hope Uzodinma (Imo), and Ahmad Aliyu (Sokoto).

The National Chairman of the APC, Abdullahi Ganduje, and former party chairman Senator Adams Oshiomhole also attended the inauguration.

The swearing-in ceremony took place amidst a large crowd and heavy security presence. Okpebholo, flanked by his two daughters, took the oath of office at 1:00 pm, marking the beginning of his tenure.

Shortly after, Deputy Governor Idahosa, joined by his wife, took his own oath of office.

Following the swearing-in, Governor Okpebholo inspected a guard of honour and a parade by officers of the Nigeria Police Force.

Shekarau Group, League Of Northern Democrats Rejects Return To Parliamentary System

The League of Northern Democrats (LND), led by former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, has strongly opposed any move to revert Nigeria to a parliamentary system of government, arguing in favor of maintaining the current presidential system.

Shekarau presented the group’s position in a paper on Monday at the National Dialogue on a Home-Grown Parliamentary System, held in Abuja.

Shekarau emphasized that the presidential system, which requires political leaders to seek a broad, nationwide mandate, fosters national unity by compelling candidates to appeal to diverse ethnic and regional groups.

He argued that this system promotes inclusivity through the Federal Character principle, ensuring that all parts of the country are fairly represented in governance.

In contrast, Shekarau warned that the parliamentary model, which was Nigeria’s system at independence, could lead to the entrenchment of narrow regional interests.

He cited the First Republic as an example, where parliamentary representation was often focused on local constituencies, which sometimes exacerbated regional divisions and undermined national cohesion.

According to Shekarau, the presidential system helps prevent the domination of any single ethnic or regional group in the political sphere, and encourages coalition-building, which in turn facilitates national integration.

He suggested that a return to the parliamentary system could foster localism and factionalism, as legislators would be primarily focused on regional rather than national priorities.

“The presidential system’s broader mandate allows for a more inclusive political process, which has been vital in breaking down ethnic and regional barriers and advancing national unity,” Shekarau concluded.

Ondo Gov’ship: APC Will Win All 18 LGAs – Attorney General

Dr. Kayode Ajulo, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ondo State, has confidently predicted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will win the upcoming governorship election in all 18 local government areas of the state.

In a statement issued on Monday, Ajulo expressed his strong belief that reelecting Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on November 16, 2024, will secure a prosperous future for Ondo State.

Ajulo, in his statement titled “Nov. 16 is a LUCKY Day”, emphasized that the APC’s victory was not just hopeful but certain.

He described the upcoming election as more than a contest—it is a confirmation of the people’s desire for stability, continuity, and progress under Aiyedatiwa’s leadership.

“As someone with years of experience in both adversity and success, I understand the path to victory clearly. The people of Ondo have shown a collective will for change, and with Aiyedatiwa at the helm, we are ready to achieve it. This election will not be about mere hopes but about affirming the future of our state.” Ajulo said

He further highlighted the ongoing fragmentation within the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), noting that their candidate is grappling with past controversies and a loss of support.

Ajulo suggested that the PDP’s candidate faces serious challenges, including possible disqualification, and that many of their members have already defected to the APC.

“The defections from the PDP to our party speak volumes. It is clear that the people are rejecting the PDP’s disarray and embracing the stability and integrity offered by the APC,” he stated.

Ajulo urged the people of Ondo State to look beyond political rhetoric and vote for a government that promises unity, progress, and a brighter future.

“This is the people’s time,” Ajulo affirmed.

“Together, we will march forward with courage and unity, and on November 16, we will show the world that Ondo’s best days are yet to come.”

IGP Disowns Police Officers Protecting Foreign Hackers

The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has confirmed that police officers were involved in the protection of foreign hackers who were arrested for cybercrimes, asserting that their actions were illegal.

On November 4, the Nigeria Police Force announced the arrest of 130 individuals, including 113 foreign nationals, mostly from China and Malaysia, and 17 Nigerian collaborators, for their involvement in high-level cybercrimes that posed significant threats to national security.

Among the arrested were men and women who were reportedly under police protection prior to their arrest.

Reacting to this development at a workshop on criminal investigations in Abuja on Monday, Egbetokun acknowledged the presence of police officers escorting the arrested individuals.

He stated that these officers were acting outside the law, adding that they had been arrested and were now in detention.

“The fact that some policemen were protecting these foreigners is true. We have arrested those officers. We found that they were on illegal duty. No formal deployment was made for them,” Egbetokun said.

He further explained that the officers involved were not assigned to protect the foreign suspects by the police command and were not authorized to perform such duties.

“The unit commanders have disowned them, and they will be held accountable for their actions,” Egbetokun added.

He assured that the police would take appropriate disciplinary measures against those involved.

The IGP also clarified that while certain individuals, such as business leaders and employers of labor, may rightfully receive police protection, those officers guarding the foreign hackers were unauthorized.

“Certain individuals, especially prominent businessmen and employers who have a significant role in the economy, deserve police protection. Their safety is important to prevent disruptions in business and the wider economy. However, the officers protecting the hackers were not formally deployed,” Egbetokun explained.

He also addressed the issue of police officers being assigned to protect individuals who do not meet the criteria for protection, stressing that such officers would be held accountable.

“We’ve issued instructions to trace and hold responsible any officers attached to individuals who don’t require protection. These officers are sometimes picked from the streets and deployed without proper clearance,” he said.

The IGP emphasized the need to minimize the misuse of police escorts.

He stated that when individuals misused their protection, the police would withdraw the escorts immediately.

On the issue of the arrested minors, Egbetokun clarified that they were not detained for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests but for crimes such as looting and destruction of property.

“The minors arrested were not protesters, but criminals who used the protest as a cover to loot and destroy public and private property. The police did not arrest any legitimate protesters. We only arrested individuals who engaged in criminal activities during the protests,” he said.

Egbetokun also refuted the claims that the minors were arrested simply for participating in the protests.

“It is wrong to claim that those arrested were protesting. They were involved in criminal actions, including arson and vandalism, and no society can tolerate such behavior,” he added.

He reiterated the force’s commitment to addressing the issue of police misconduct and misuse of power, emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring and strict enforcement of regulations to ensure accountability.

Two Months After Borno Jailbreak, 278 Escapees Remain At Large

Two months after a devastating flood in Borno State led to the collapse of a correctional facility, 278 inmates remain unaccounted for.

The incident, which took place on September 10, severely impacted the Maiduguri medium security custodial centre, allowing 281 prisoners to escape as floodwaters tore through the structure.

Abubakar Umar, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Correctional Service, confirmed that 278 of the escapees are still missing, noting the scale of the damage caused by the flood, which also destroyed essential infrastructure in the region, including roads, bridges, and staff quarters.

“The flood destroyed the walls of the custodial centre in Maiduguri, and during the evacuation of inmates, 281 were found to be missing,” Umar explained.

He added that security agencies had worked together to relocate the inmates to safer facilities.

Since the jailbreak, the Borno State Police Command has managed to re-arrest three of the escaped convicts.

Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso, provided updates on their capture, identifying the individuals as Auwalu Aminu, Abubakar Mohammed, and Kyari Kur.

In a statement, Daso said that Kyari Kur was apprehended on October 10 after police received credible information about his whereabouts in Gubio town.

Another escapee, Abubakar Mohammed, was caught after a resident tipped off authorities on September 15 when he was spotted in Gubio.

Auwalu Aminu was arrested on October 16 following a tip-off in Banki town, where he was located by officers from the Bama Area Command.

Despite these successes, Daso confirmed that 278 inmates are still at large, and police are continuing their search operations to track down the remaining fugitives.

“We are still actively pursuing the other escapees. Our search efforts are ongoing, and we will continue to update the public on our progress.” Daso said in an interview.

The police spokesperson also assured that the re-arrested suspects were handed over to the correctional services.

“So far, four suspects have been re-arrested and transferred back to the correctional service,” he added.

NJC Denies Death Rumor of Court of Appeal Judges

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has strongly rejected claims circulating about the deaths of two judges from the Court of Appeal, who were members of the panel that upheld President Bola Tinubu’s election in September 2023.

The rumors falsely claimed that Justices Mistura Bolaji-Yusuf and Boloukuoromo Ugo died mysteriously on the same day.

The two justices were part of the five-member panel that, on September 6, 2023, delivered a unanimous ruling rejecting the petitions of Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party. The panel affirmed Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 presidential election.

According to the false reports, Justice Bolaji-Yusuf was allegedly found dead by her family, despite being in good health the previous night.

The same report claimed that Justice Ugo was found dead after a loud noise from his room, with family members discovering him bleeding and unresponsive.

However, the NJC has dismissed the reports as baseless, with its secretary, Mr. Ahmed Saleh, categorically stating, “This news is a lie. The justices are alive, well, and continuing their duties.”

A Court of Appeal staff also debunked the rumors, describing them as “totally false and mischievous.”

The staff expressed disbelief over the spread of such unfounded rumors, urging the public to ignore the fake news.
