Trial of Abia Rep Member For Assault Begins November 8; Granted N500,000 Bail

Advertorial

A Kuje Magistrate Court in the Federal Capital Territory has set November 8 for the trial of Alexander Ikwechegh, the House of Representatives member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency in Abia State.

He was granted bail of N500,000 after being arraigned on charges of assault.

Ikwechegh appeared before Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id on Wednesday, facing accusations of assaulting a Bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatseya, at his residence in Abuja.

Advertorial

He pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include abuse of office, assault, and threats to life, as brought forth by Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun.

Following the plea, Ikwechegh’s counsel requested bail, which the court granted under specific conditions: two sureties residing within the court’s jurisdiction, each also required to provide utility bills as proof of residence.

The court then adjourned the case until November 8.

Advertorial

The incident gained significant attention after a video surfaced on social media, showing Ikwechegh allegedly assaulting Abuwatseya.

In the footage, he is seen slapping the driver multiple times while threatening him with severe consequences.

In response to the incident, the civil society organization Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC) condemned Ikwechegh’s actions, describing them as a blatant abuse of power commonly seen among politicians.

Executive Director Okechukwu Nwanguma emphasized that this incident reflects poorly not only on Ikwechegh but on the entire House of Representatives.

Advertorial

Nwanguma stated, “The brutal treatment of Uber driver Stephen Abuwatseya by federal lawmaker Alex Ikwechegh is a stark example of the abuse of power prevalent in Nigeria’s political landscape. Such behavior highlights a disturbing trend where officials operate above the law, demonstrating a lack of respect for citizens’ rights.”

He further noted that while the House’s decision to investigate the matter is a positive step, it remains uncertain whether this will lead to meaningful accountability.

Advertorial

He urged that justice be served not just for Abuwatseya but for all victims of similar abuses, calling for reforms that prioritize human rights and the rule of law in Nigeria.

Only Way To ‘Turn the Page’ On Trump’s Divisiveness Is By Voting For Harris – Popular Terminator Star, Schwarzenegger

Advertorial

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the former Republican governor of California and star of the “Terminator” series, announced his endorsement of Democratic candidate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, calling it the only way to “turn the page” on Donald Trump’s divisive politics.

The 77-year-old actor expressed frustration with both major parties but was particularly angered by Trump’s description of the U.S. as “a trash can for the world.” Schwarzenegger stated that such rhetoric is deeply unpatriotic.

Advertorial

With the November 5 election approaching, Schwarzenegger joins a growing list of notable former Republican leaders, including former Vice President Dick Cheney, who have chosen to support Harris over Trump.

“To someone like me who speaks with people globally and recognizes America as the shining city on a hill, calling it a trash can for the world is infuriating,” he stated. “I will always prioritize being an American over being a Republican. That’s why I am voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz this week,” he shared on X.

Since leaving office in 2011 after two terms as governor of California, Schwarzenegger has focused on issues such as environmental advocacy, small business support, and immigration reform.

In the wake of the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, Schwarzenegger condemned the event, comparing it to the Nazi Kristallnacht riots in Austria and labeling Trump a “failed leader” destined to be remembered as one of the worst presidents in U.S. history.

Sexual Harassment: Randy Lecturers To Face 14-Year Jail Term – Reps

Advertorial

The House of Representatives passed a significant bill on Wednesday that mandates a maximum 14-year prison sentence for lecturers and school administrators found guilty of sexual harassment against students in tertiary institutions.

Titled “A Bill to Prevent, Prohibit and Redress Sexual Harassment of Students in Tertiary Educational Institutions and for Related Matters,” the legislation was approved following a report presented by House Leader Prof. Julius Ihonvbere.

Advertorial

According to the bill, individuals convicted of the offences outlined in Clause 4 (1), (2), and (3) will face felony charges and can be sentenced to imprisonment for up to 14 years, with a minimum term of 5 years and no option for a fine. Those found guilty of offences listed in Clause 4 (4), (5), and (6) face up to 5 years in prison, with a minimum of 2 years, also without an option for a fine.

The legislation defines sexual harassment in educational settings as any unwelcome physical or verbal conduct of a sexual nature directed at a student or prospective student, including demands for such conduct regardless of consent.

It also includes creating a hostile or intimidating environment through unsolicited sexual advances or requests for sexual favors.

Additional offences covered by the bill include making sexual remarks, gestures, or comments that demean, humiliate, or body-shame a student based on appearance, as well as stalking or any unwanted attention that causes fear or discomfort.

Importantly, the bill states that consent cannot be used as a defense if a power imbalance exists between the educator and the student.

However, it does specify that being legally married to the student can serve as a defense against any charges under this legislation.

His defection was announced during Wednesday’s plenary session by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, who read a letter from Gumi.

Kidnappers of Catholic Priest Who Offered Himself In Exchange for Two Seminarians Demand N200 Million Ransom

Advertorial

The abductors of Rev. Fr. Thomas Oyode, Rector of the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary of the Catholic Diocese of Auchi in Edo State, have demanded a ransom of N200 million for his release.

Rev. Fr. Oyode was kidnapped on Sunday night during evening mass after he voluntarily offered himself in exchange for two seminarians who had previously been abducted by the same gunmen.

Advertorial

The ransom demand was confirmed by Rev. Fr. Peter Egielewa, the Director of Communications for the Catholic Diocese of Auchi, in a text message to journalists in Benin City. “It is true,” he stated regarding the demand.

A source, who requested anonymity, revealed that the kidnappers contacted the diocese on Monday evening, insisting on the N200 million ransom. As of that day, negotiations had not yet begun, and it was unclear whether the church would engage in ransom discussions.

Advertorial

Reports indicate that the gunmen initially abducted two seminarians during a shooting incident. Rev. Fr. Oyode then pleaded with the kidnappers to release the students, ultimately offering to take their place as the Rector responsible for their welfare.

The gunmen accepted his offer, releasing the seminarians and taking Fr. Oyode captive.

According to Rev. Fr. Egielewa, the incident occurred on October 27 at approximately 7 p.m. while priests and seminarians were engaged in evening prayers and benediction.

The seminary, founded in 2006 by the Catholic Bishop of Auchi, Most Rev. Dr. Gabriel Dunia, has trained over 500 students to date.

As of Tuesday morning, there has been no official response from the Edo State Police Command regarding the abduction.
