“It’s Nigeria’s Property,” Onanuga Clarifies That Tinubu Acquired Refurbished Jet, Not New

Advertorial

Bayo Onanuga, presidential spokesman, has clarified that President Bola Tinubu did not purchase a new official jet but instead acquired a refurbished one.

He emphasized that the aircraft belongs to the Nigerian people, stating, “It is our property.”

In an appearance on Channels Television’s Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, Onanuga explained that many jets in the presidential fleet, including a 19-year-old Boeing B737-700 acquired during ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, are in poor condition, leading to high maintenance costs.

Rather than incurring excessive expenses for upkeep, the President sought National Assembly approval for a refurbished Airbus A330, which is still in good working order.

Onanuga highlighted that this refurbished jet would reduce Nigeria’s maintenance costs compared to the aging aircraft currently in use.

He urged citizens to prioritize the President’s safety, noting that the new plane is intended for state use, not for Tinubu personally.

He assured that the jet would remain in Nigeria’s possession for the benefit of future leaders.

Advertorial

“The president did not buy a new jet; he has acquired a refurbished jet that has been previously used but is a newer model than the one used by President Buhari,” Onanuga stated.

He recalled an incident during President Buhari’s administration when a malfunction forced the President to use a chartered jet during a trip to Saudi Arabia.

Onanuga also mentioned discussions with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu about the faulty aircraft, emphasizing that its age led to exorbitant maintenance costs.

Advertorial

He urged the public to focus on ensuring the President’s safety, asserting that no one wishes harm upon him.

Despite the administration’s defense of the refurbished Airbus A330 acquisition, it has faced criticism from various Nigerians and political opponents.

Many argue that the decision appears insensitive given the ongoing challenges faced by numerous citizens, including soaring food prices and energy costs.

Concerns over the state of the Presidential Air Fleet have been mounting; in May, a faulty jet prevented Vice President Kashim Shettima from attending the 2024 US-Africa Business Summit.

Additionally, a Falcon 900B aircraft was put up for sale by the Nigerian Air Force last December, inviting bids for its purchase.

Advertorial

The Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), led by Chief Edwin Clark, has formed a High-Level Peace and Reconciliation Committee aimed at mediating the ongoing conflict between Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

This decision was announced in a communique following PANDEF’s Special General Assembly meeting in Port Harcourt over the weekend.

The committee is tasked with resolving disputes and conflicts within the region, not limited to the Wike-Fubara situation.

Advertorial

The communique was signed by notable figures, including King Alfred Diette-Spiff, the Amayanabo of Twon Brass and Co-Chairman of PANDEF’s Board of Trustees; Obong Victor Attah, former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and also Co-Chairman; Dr. Godknows B. Igali, National Chairman; and other key members.

Obong Victor Attah will lead the reconciliation committee, which includes prominent figures such as Senator Emmanuel Ibok-Essien, Senator Rowland Owie, Senator Stella Omu, Rear Admiral G. John-Jonah, H.E. Pam Ogar, and Rt. Hon. Dr. Stella Dorgu.

Advertorial

Although the communique did not specifically mention the political rift between Wike and Fubara, PANDEF’s spokesman confirmed that the committee’s mandate includes addressing their conflict.

The tension between the former governor Wike and Fubara has been ongoing since Fubara took office in 2023, primarily revolving around power dynamics in Rivers State.

Their strained relationship persists despite interventions from President Bola Tinubu and other stakeholders.

Advertorial

In addition to the reconciliation efforts, PANDEF strongly condemned President Tinubu’s recent decision to dissolve the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.

The organization urged the federal government to engage in further discussions regarding this move, highlighting the importance of the ministry in addressing the unique challenges faced by the Niger Delta region.

The communique emphasized that the Ministry of Niger Delta was established to tackle specific issues related to the region’s environment and economic significance.

Advertorial

While PANDEF welcomed the proposed South-South Commission, it insisted that the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) should accurately reflect its functions and membership.

Recognizing the need for educational improvements in the region, PANDEF called on state governments to implement tuition-free education at all levels.

They proposed that each of the 185 local government areas should host at least one tertiary institution, with a minimum annual budget allocation of 25% for education in line with UNESCO recommendations.

Advertorial

Furthermore, PANDEF urged the federal government to repair dilapidated roads, complete the East-West Highway, initiate the Calabar-Lagos railway project, and establish a maritime mass transit system for the Niger Delta’s riverine communities.

The assembly, held on October 24, 2024, at the Hotel Presidential in Port Harcourt, was attended by delegates from all six state chapters and various dignitaries, including former governors, military leaders, and representatives from ethnic organizations.

The theme of the assembly was “Fostering Peace and Unity for Sustainable Development of the Niger Delta.”

The gathering featured goodwill messages from prominent South-South leaders, underscoring the region’s commitment to peace and progress.

Seven Scavengers Die In Abuja Building Collapse

Advertorial

The FCT Emergency Management Department has confirmed the recovery of seven bodies of iron scavengers who entered the site of a demolished building in Sabon Lugbe, a suburb of Abuja.

Mr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, the Director of the department, reported the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday, noting that two additional victims were receiving medical treatment at the Federal Medical Centre.

Advertorial

According to Mohammed, over 500 scavengers descended on the demolished site to salvage iron rods, which led to a portion of the remaining structure collapsing onto them.

He emphasized that rescue operations have concluded and clarified that reports of a multi-storey building collapse with over 40 individuals trapped were inaccurate.

“The building was one of several illegally constructed structures that were demolished by the FCT Department of Development Control on Thursday,” he explained. “The scavengers entered the site in search of iron rods when part of the demolished structure caved in.”

He assured that no one was living in the building, contrary to some media claims. Mohammed mentioned that the Chairman of Miyetti Allah in Abuja confirmed the loss of five members from the incident.

He expressed disappointment over the continued presence of scavengers at other demolished sites, stating, “Despite the tragedy, some are still on site attempting to salvage materials. We have asked them to leave, but they are refusing to comply.”

Advertorial

A police officer at the scene echoed these sentiments, labeling the reports of a multi-storey building collapse and numerous victims as false.

Eyewitness Aliyu Musa recounted warnings given to the scavengers: “I know one of the deceased. We warned him not to enter the building, but he ignored us. He climbed onto the slab and began hitting the iron when it suddenly collapsed, resulting in his death.”

The FCT Emergency Management Department plans to further secure the area and ensure all remaining structures are demolished.

APP Urges Gov Fubara To Seek Re-Election Under Its Platform In 2027

Advertorial

The Action Peoples Party (APP) has extended an invitation to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to run for re-election under its banner in 2027, despite clarifying that he is not currently a member of the party.

During a solidarity visit from the former leadership of the APP in the state, led by Kenneth Atata, current APP Chairman Sunny Wokekoro made this announcement at the party’s secretariat in Port Harcourt on Saturday.

Advertorial

He emphasized that, as a former member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Fubara should consider a shift to APP, especially as he views the PDP as no longer a viable option for progressive politicians.

Wokekoro stated, “I was a founding member of the PDP, but recent developments have shown that it is not a party for anyone with morals or integrity. Any politician who values these qualities should have left the PDP by now.”

He clarified that while there is a misconception that Governor Fubara is affiliated with the APP, the party has been established since 2017, long before his tenure.

Wokekoro noted, “No one can claim ownership of this party. Governor Siminalayi Fubara is not a member of our party, but we hope to persuade him to use our platform for his re-election.”

Wokekoro encouraged other notable politicians from the State and National Assemblies to join APP, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to elevate the party’s status in Rivers State and beyond.

Advertorial

APP National Chairman, Uchenna Nnadi commended Wokekoro for his leadership and efforts in raising the party’s profile in the state.

He noted the increasing recognition of the APP on a national level.

Michelle Obama Warns of Risks To Women’s Safety If Trump Wins, Urges Support For Harris

Advertorial

Michelle Obama has urged men to rally behind Kamala Harris’s campaign to become America’s first female president, cautioning that women’s safety could be jeopardized if Donald Trump is reelected.

Speaking at a rally in Michigan on Saturday, the former first lady addressed the recent attacks on abortion rights, calling them a precursor to more significant threats to women’s healthcare.

Advertorial

She acknowledged that some men might consider voting for Trump out of frustration with the slow pace of progress, but cautioned that “your rage does not exist in a vacuum.”

“If we don’t get this election right, your wife, your daughter, your mother will become collateral damage to your rage,” she stated, pressing men to reflect on how their voting choices affect the women in their lives.

This rally in Kalamazoo marked Michelle Obama’s first campaign appearance since her speech at the Democratic National Convention over the summer.

Her comments were impassioned and direct in support of Harris.

“By every measure, she has demonstrated that she’s ready,” Michelle Obama said. “The real question is, as a country, are we ready for this moment?”

She urged the audience not to be swayed by misinformation about Harris, asserting, “This is somebody who understands you, all of you.”

Advertorial

Expressing concern about the close presidential race, she said, “I lay awake at night wondering, ‘What in the world is going on?’”

Michelle Obama highlighted the challenges women face regarding their health, discussing issues from menstruation to childbirth, emphasizing that a momentary decision can mean life or death for mothers and babies.

“I am asking y’all from the core of my being to take our lives seriously,” she pleaded.

Advertorial

Following her remarks, Kamala Harris took the stage, promising voters that she would prioritize their interests, unlike Trump, whom she criticized for being self-centered.

“There is a yearning in our country for a president who sees the people, not just looking in the mirror all the time, but sees the people, who gets you and who will fight for you,” Harris declared.

This high-profile event followed Harris’s appearances with Beyoncé in Houston and Barack Obama and Bruce Springsteen in Atlanta, further emphasizing her campaign efforts.
