Again, PDP Postpones NEC Meeting

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rescheduled its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, initially planned for this Thursday, to 28 November 2024.

This decision comes as the party intensifies preparations for the upcoming Ondo State governorship election, set for 16 November 2024.

The announcement was made following a consultative session of the PDP Governors’ Forum, chaired by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.

Advertorial

The forum’s meeting on Tuesday, 22 October 2024, held at the Bauchi State Governors’ Lodge in Abuja, brought together key members of the party’s leadership, including the National Working Committee, the National Assembly caucus, and former PDP governors.

A communiqué released after the meeting emphasized the need for unity and focus ahead of the Ondo election, stating, “The PDP has decided to postpone the NEC meeting to ensure the party is strategically prepared to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo and reclaim the state.”

Advertorial

The forum underscored the importance of maintaining solidarity within the party, cautioning members against divisive rhetoric that could disrupt efforts to present a unified front for the election.

The PDP also used the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to playing a central role as Nigeria’s opposition in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

Bauchi State Governor Mohammed expressed support for Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, whose leadership had faced recent legal challenges.

Advertorial

Mohammed’s endorsement came amid an internal power struggle that saw a faction seeking to block the NEC meeting through a court case in Zamfara.

This move followed a previous injunction from the Abuja Federal High Court that prevented any attempt to remove Damagum from his position.

At Tuesday’s gathering, Mohammed addressed party stakeholders, emphasizing the collective focus on reconciliation and preparation for the Ondo election.

“This is not merely a meeting of governors but a session for all PDP stakeholders. Our priority is to reconcile our differences and solidify our strategy for the upcoming electoral contests,” he stated.

Advertorial

Only five of the party’s 13 governors were present at the forum, including Governors Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), and Caleb Muftwang (Plateau), alongside Mohammed.

The meeting followed the efforts of the Reconciliation Committee, led by former Osun Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola, which recently mediated disputes within the National Working Committee, allowing the party to move forward.

Advertorial

Mohammed underscored the PDP’s role as a credible alternative, stating, “We will not allow Nigeria to become a one-party state. Our experience since 1999 has equipped us to provide a robust platform for the Nigerian people.”

Father, Native Doctor Arrested In Enugu Over Alleged Conspiracy Ritual Murder Of Son

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested 67-year-old Uwakwe Eze and a 48-year-old native doctor, Enuwa Odugu, over the alleged murder of Eze’s son, Chikwado Celestine Eze.

Chikwado, aged 26, recently obtained a visa to travel abroad and reportedly sought spiritual protection at the native doctor’s shrine ahead of his journey.

The tragic incident drew widespread attention on social media, with many expressing shock at the circumstances of his death.

DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the spokesperson for the Enugu State Police Command, revealed that “during the ritual, Chikwado was placed inside a coffin as part of a fortification process. However, the ritual went wrong, and Chikwado died during the process. He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors confirmed his death. The body has since been moved to a mortuary for an autopsy.”

“The native doctor, Enuwa Odugu, has confessed to performing the ritual, admitting that Chikwado’s death was due to his failure to follow specific instructions tied to the ritual. Odugu also disclosed that he had conducted similar rituals in the past.”

Just In: Trouble For PDP As Two Governors Set To Dump Party

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing further internal turmoil as reports suggest that two of its governors are on the verge of defecting to other political parties.

This development comes amid escalating tensions within the party, with disagreements between key party members and leadership factions.

Sources reveal that these governors have been holding discussions with members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Action People’s Party (APP), as well as other political groups.

Advertorial

One of the governors, from the South-South region, is reportedly frustrated by the unresolved leadership crisis and the lack of cohesion within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).

Another has expressed concerns about the party’s prospects in the next general election, citing poor strategic direction and deepening divisions within the ranks.

The potential departure of these two governors would add to the PDP’s woes, following a series of recent setbacks, including leadership tussles and defections by other key figures in the party.

Gabon’s New Constitution Proposal Sets National Holiday To Celebrate Bongo’s Downfall

Gabon’s ruling military junta has proposed a new constitution that designates a national holiday celebrating the end of the long-standing Bongo dynasty.

This proposal was revealed in local media on Tuesday, following the transitional government’s publication of the draft text, which was approved by the Council of Ministers last week.

A national referendum on the new constitution is scheduled for November 16.

Advertorial

The draft includes a provision for a “national liberation day” to be observed annually on August 30, commemorating the ousting of Ali Bongo Ondimba and the conclusion of the Bongo family’s 55-year rule.

Bongo was removed from power on August 30 last year, just an hour after the announcement of his third-term election win, which was contested by a military coup led by General Brice Oligui Nguema.

The junta accused Bongo of rigging the election.

Advertorial

The proposed constitution introduces several key changes, including the elimination of the prime minister’s role and the establishment of a seven-year presidential term, which can be renewed only once.

It also enforces a limit of two consecutive terms for the presidency and calls for elections by direct universal suffrage.

Transitional President Brice Oligui Nguema, who led the coup, has promised a return to civilian rule in the oil-rich West African nation and has hinted at his intention to run in the presidential election set for August 2025.

Advertorial

In a statement on social media platform X, Oligui encouraged citizens to carefully review the proposed constitution, which he described as a product of national consultations.

Additional amendments include a redefinition of marriage as a union between a man and a woman and more stringent criteria for presidential candidates.

Aspiring candidates must have at least one Gabonese-born parent, cannot hold any other nationality, and must be married to a Gabonese national.

These conditions, according to local media Gabon Review, draw a clear distinction between native Gabonese and those who are naturalized or hold dual citizenship, effectively excluding the latter from running for the presidency.

PDP Crisis: Reconciliation Committee Chairman, Oyinlola Declares Mission Accomplished

In the midst of ongoing tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, chairman of the party’s National Reconciliation Committee, announced that the committee has successfully reconciled members of the National Working Committee (NWC).

He made this declaration following a meeting with NWC members in Abuja on Tuesday.

Oyinlola expressed gratitude for the outcome, stating, “To the glory of God, we have been able to resolve the differences that have been causing our party some headache within the National Working Committee.”

Advertorial

He emphasized the importance of unity for the party’s progress, asserting that the reconciliation efforts have paved the way for a united NWC.

While he refrained from detailing the specific issues addressed, he affirmed that the resolved differences were crucial for the party’s advancement.

When asked about the implications for the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Thursday, he clarified, “That wasn’t part of our discussion… I have done my job, and it is finished.”

Advertorial

Attendees at Tuesday’s meeting included Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, National Secretary Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, and National Treasurer Yayari Ahmed, among others.

The PDP has faced internal strife, particularly after the suspension of National Publicity Secretary Hon. Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade by the party’s leadership.

This prompted Ologunagba and Ajibade to counter-suspend Damagum and Anyanwu, leading to a stalemate until the PDP Governors Forum intervened, calling for peace and a return to normalcy.

Advertorial

Despite these efforts, uncertainty looms as a group reportedly aligned with Governor Bala Mohammed has filed a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Zamfara.

The five-count suit seeks to compel the party to hold the NEC meeting on October 24 as planned, and to restrain the Damagum-led NWC from postponing it.

The PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have been named as respondents in the case.

CAN Urges Governor Otti To Revoke Controversial Church Signpost Tax

Governor Alex Otti’s administration has introduced a new tax targeting signposts displayed by churches in Abia State, sparking controversy and pushback from the religious community.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Abia State Chapter, has voiced strong objections, stating that Abia is the only state in the country enforcing such a tax on churches.

Advertorial

In a letter addressed to the Governor, signed by CAN’s State Chairman, Rev. Ojo Ojo Uduma, and Secretary, Rev. Dr. Francis E. Okere, the association warned that the policy might lead many Christians in the state to view the government as hostile towards the church.

The letter urged Governor Otti to reconsider the tax, emphasizing the need for a fair resolution.

“We earnestly appeal to Your Excellency to reconsider this policy as a matter of urgency, to prevent the Body of Christ in the state from perceiving this administration as anti-church,” the letter stated.

Advertorial

CAN has also proposed a roundtable discussion with Abia’s Christian leaders to seek a mutually acceptable solution to the matter.

WAEC Computer-Based Examination Begins On Friday

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has announced that it will begin the Computer-Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (CBWASSCE) for private candidates starting October 25, 2024.

This new examination format will run until December 20, 2024, according to a statement released on Tuesday.

The upcoming exam will feature a hybrid format, where objective or multiple-choice questions will be presented on-screen, requiring candidates to respond directly on the computer.

Advertorial

Essay and practical questions will also appear on-screen, but candidates must provide their answers in the traditional answer booklets supplied by WAEC.

For candidates who prefer the conventional approach, the council has maintained an option for a full Paper and Pen mode for all examination sections.

WAEC also announced an extension for registration, which will now close on Tuesday, October 29, 2024.

Advertorial

Additionally, the Council’s ‘Walk-in-Candidate’ opportunity, allowing individuals to register 24 hours before a specific paper, will be available after the registration deadline.

Adesina Fadekemi, a WAEC spokesperson, highlighted these updates, emphasizing the flexibility offered to candidates with this new approach to the examination.

Mainpower Takes Charge Of Enugu’s Electricity Supply As EEDC Exits Market

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has officially ended its operations in Enugu State, handing over its distribution responsibilities to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited, a subsidiary of EEDC.

This transition marks a significant regulatory shift, with the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) assuming oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).

Advertorial

In a ceremony held in Enugu, the Chairman/CEO of EERC, Mr. Chijioke Okonkwo, presented an interim operating license to Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited. Okonkwo urged Mainpower to prioritize reliable, efficient, and sustainable power delivery to residents of Enugu State.

He emphasized the importance of accountability and collaboration with EERC to ensure the growth of the electricity sector.

With the issuance of the license, EEDC’s operations in Enugu State have officially concluded, transferring full regulatory and operational control to Mainpower.

Advertorial

This also means that NERC will no longer regulate the electricity market in Enugu, which now falls under EERC’s jurisdiction.

Mr. Kester Enwereonu, a Board member of Mainpower, described the successful transition as a milestone for power sector reforms.

He outlined Mainpower’s commitment to deploying advanced technologies and innovative processes to overcome traditional challenges in electricity distribution.

Advertorial

Enwereonu highlighted that Mainpower’s approach will be data-driven, focusing on enhancing efficiency and ensuring consistent power delivery throughout the state.

“This is a forward-looking step for Enugu State,” Enwereonu remarked.

“With the regulatory guidance of EERC, our dedication to operational excellence, and the backing of our stakeholders, Mainpower is prepared to deliver the quality improvements that the people of Enugu deserve.”

Dr. Ernest Mupwaya, Managing Director of Mainpower, was also in attendance at the licensing ceremony.

Advertorial

This transition aligns with the provisions of the recently signed Electricity Act, which enables Nigerian states to generate, transmit, and distribute power independently.

States are now required to establish their own regulatory bodies to oversee local electricity markets and grant licenses to investors.

Consequently, NERC will transfer its oversight responsibilities to state-based commissions, such as the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC).

As a result, EEDC’s presence in Enugu State concludes, while Mainpower assumes its role as the state’s sole electricity distributor. EEDC will continue its operations in other southeastern states, including Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo.

US Presidency: 14 Days To Go – What Polls Say, What Might Likely Play Out

..As Harris, Trump Target Key Swing States

With just two weeks remaining before the US presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are intensifying their campaigns in critical battleground states, where the race remains closely contested.

On Monday, Harris, the Democratic candidate, visited three crucial “blue wall” states—Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin—which have a history of voting Democratic and played a significant role in the victories of the last two Democratic presidents.

Meanwhile, Trump, the Republican nominee, made campaign stops in Asheville, North Carolina, expressing concern that the recent devastation from Hurricane Helene could impact voter turnout in a race that surveys suggest is increasingly competitive.

Polls Show Tight Contest as Election Nears

According to a new survey published by The Washington Post on Monday, Harris and Trump are running neck-and-neck across seven key battleground states, which will be decisive in the outcome of the election.

The poll, conducted by The Washington Post and Schar School, involved over 5,000 registered voters in early October.

Advertorial

It revealed that 47 percent of voters support each candidate.

Among likely voters, Harris holds a slight edge with 49 percent backing her compared to 48 percent for Trump.

Trump recently saw a minor increase in his average in the aggregation of polls calculated by FiveThirtyEight, putting him narrowly ahead of Harris, though the difference remains within the margin of error, making it a statistical tie.

Advertorial

FiveThirtyEight’s election tracker, as of October 21, shows Harris leading in national polls by a 1.8 percentage-point margin over Trump.

In key states—Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Nevada—accounting for 51 Electoral College votes, the candidates are virtually tied, with less than half a percentage point separating them.

A victory in all four states would almost certainly secure the presidency for either candidate.

Advertorial

Harris’s Campaign Focus

On October 21, Harris made a campaign stop in Malvern, Pennsylvania, alongside former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney.

Speaking under a banner that read “Country Over Party,” Cheney urged disenchanted Republicans to support Harris instead of Trump.

The endorsement from Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is one of the most notable Republican endorsements Harris has received.

Advertorial

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump criticized Cheney, calling her “dumb as a rock” and labeling her a “war hawk.”

Despite the backlash, Cheney stood by her decision, emphasizing that Harris represents a candidate who has remained loyal to the US Constitution—a principle she described as the “most conservative” for Republicans.

“You have a choice in this election between someone who has shown loyalty to the Constitution and who will continue to do so, and Donald Trump,” Cheney said, clarifying her stance in supporting Harris.
