Canada Revises Visa Policy, Cancels 10-Year Multiple-Entry Visas

Canada has announced significant changes to its visa policy, eliminating the automatic issuance of 10-year multiple-entry visas for tourists.

The new guidelines, introduced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), give immigration officers more discretion in granting visas based on individual assessments rather than defaulting to extended validity periods.

Under the updated policy, applicants may now receive visas for shorter durations, and those who frequently visit Canada for work or leisure could face higher application fees and more limited validity periods.

The move is part of a broader effort by the Canadian government to manage temporary immigration levels, alleviate housing shortages, and address rising living costs.

Previously, Canada offered two types of tourist visas: multiple-entry visas, which allowed visits over a 10-year period (or until the passport expired), and single-entry visas, which were issued for specific circumstances like official visits or single-event participation.

The new policy gives immigration officers the authority to decide whether to issue a single-entry or multiple-entry visa, considering each application on a case-by-case basis.

The IRCC clarified that the 10-year multiple-entry visa will no longer be considered the default option.

Officers now have more flexibility in determining the appropriate visa type and validity period based on the applicant’s travel history and the purpose of their visit.

This policy shift is part of Canada’s broader strategy to manage its immigration system more sustainably.

In addition to the visa changes, Canada has also revised its targets for permanent resident admissions, reducing the number from 500,000 to 395,000 for 2025, with further reductions planned for the following years.

These measures reflect Canada’s efforts to balance immigration growth with the country’s economic and infrastructure challenges, ensuring that immigration remains manageable in light of housing pressures and the cost of living.

‘Underperforming Commissioners Will Go,’ Gov. Yusuf Insists He Doesn’t Need C’mittee Report for Cabinet Reshuffle

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has confirmed plans to reshuffle his cabinet, with plans to remove underperforming commissioners.

The governor disclosed on Friday that he had received a report from a committee evaluating the performance of his cabinet members.

However, he emphasized that the committee’s findings would not influence his final decisions, as he is already familiar with the capabilities of each member from their work over the past 18 months.

Speaking during a live radio interview at the Government House on Wednesday, Governor Yusuf stated that the cabinet reshuffle was inevitable, as he had personally observed the performance of his commissioners and would make decisions based on his direct experience with them.

He also clarified that none of the current commissioners had lobbied for their appointments, noting that he considered factors such as experience, credibility, and consultations before making the appointments.

The governor outlined his expectations for the commissioners, which included loyalty to him, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, as well as dedication to their duties and the initiation of policies that would advance the development of the state.

Governor Yusuf also touched on his administration’s poverty alleviation efforts.

He highlighted the ongoing distribution of free foodstuffs across both urban and rural areas, aimed at easing the hardships caused by the removal of the petroleum subsidy.

He assured that the initiative would continue to support the most vulnerable citizens in the state.

In addition, Governor Yusuf revealed that his administration was upgrading the Kano State Agricultural Supply Company (KASCO), which supplies fertilizer to farmers, to increase production and support food security.

The governor further stated that empowering women and youth was a priority of his administration, with 52,000 women and youths in the state receiving N50,000 each every month to help them start businesses and become self-reliant.

Desmond Elliot Denies Gay Rumours, Says He’s “Straight”

Nollywood actor-turned-politician Desmond Elliot has strongly denied rumours circulating about his sexual orientation, following claims made in a recent blog post that several Nigerian celebrities, including him, are gay.

The blog’s list of alleged gay celebrities caused an uproar on social media, but in a TVC interview, Elliot dismissed the allegations as baseless and irrelevant to his life.

He expressed that he had more important matters to focus on than addressing the rumours.

He explained, “Why should I respond to something that doesn’t affect my life? It neither reduces nor increases my worth. People are entitled to their opinions, but for me, it’s not necessary to validate or deny such claims as long as I am making a positive impact on people’s lives.”

Elliot emphasized that he does not believe in living for public approval, and if someone identifies with a particular lifestyle, it should be within the boundaries of the law and personal respect.

He added, “Let me make it clear, I am straight. You won’t find anyone straighter than me.”

While acknowledging that some people may seek attention through such rumours, he stated that he did not care for them.

“Do what makes you happy, but do it within the law and with respect for others,” Elliot concluded.

Nigeria Gains West African Backing In Bid For Permanent UN Security Council Seat

Nigeria has secured backing from several West African nations in its quest for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

The UN Security Council, established in 1945, comprises 15 members, including five permanent members (the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, and France) with veto power, and 10 non-permanent members elected for two-year terms without veto power.

Despite Africa’s 54 member states in the UN, the continent lacks a permanent representative on the council.

Nigeria, along with South Africa and Egypt, is vying for one of the proposed two additional permanent seats for African countries.

While these three nations are the leading contenders, the final decision will require extensive discussions both within the African Union and with other UN member states.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, revealed in a press briefing in Abuja that he had recently visited Togo, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau to solicit their support for Nigeria’s bid for a permanent Security Council seat.

“We discussed and sought support for Nigeria’s bid to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council. Every country we visited, despite being from the same region, agreed that no other nation is better suited or more qualified than Nigeria to represent Africa on the global stage. They assured us of their support when the time comes,” Tuggar stated.

He added that some countries expressed willingness to begin work immediately to support Nigeria’s candidacy.

In addition to the Security Council bid, Tuggar discussed Nigeria’s candidate for the International Court of Justice, Femi Elias, noting that all the nations visited also pledged their support for Nigeria’s candidate.

Tuggar emphasized the significance of a permanent seat for Nigeria, pointing out that 68% of decisions made by the UN Security Council pertain to Africa, yet no African country holds a permanent seat.

“The lack of a permanent African seat in the UN Security Council is a glaring gap. Nigeria’s representation is crucial, not only for our region but for the continent and the world at large,” said Tuggar.

He highlighted that President Bola Tinubu is fully committed to this cause, adding that the U.S. has expressed support for a permanent African presence on the Security Council.

Russian President, Vladimir Putin has congratulated Donald Trump on his U.S election victory, praising the Republican’s “manly” reaction to an attempted assassination and stating that he is “ready” to speak with the president-elect.

Speaking at the annual Valdai Club meeting in Sochi on Thursday, Putin officially broke his silence, offering his congratulations after initially withholding public well-wishes.

He said, “I take this opportunity to congratulate him on his election as president of the United States of America.”

Putin revealed that, despite receiving calls from Western leaders following the election, he had not yet spoken to Trump but was open to communication.

“If any of them wants to resume contact, I have always said and I want to say again: we have nothing against it,” Putin stated.

When asked directly if he would be willing to engage with Trump even before his inauguration, Putin responded affirmatively: “We are ready, ready.”

During his campaign, Trump had made bold claims about his ability to swiftly end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, promising that he could broker a peace deal in a single day.

Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed Trump’s assertions, claiming any such deal would be detrimental to Ukraine.

Putin expressed uncertainty about how Trump’s foreign policy would unfold once in office, given that his campaign remarks were made in the heat of election rhetoric.

Nevertheless, Putin acknowledged Trump’s stated desire to “restore relations with Russia” and end the Ukrainian crisis, calling it a position “worthy of attention.”

Throughout his campaign, Trump has repeatedly expressed admiration for Putin, calling him a strong leader, a sentiment that Putin seemed to reciprocate.

The Russian president complimented Trump’s “manly” response to the July assassination attempt against him, noting, “He turned out to be a courageous man. He showed himself, in my opinion, in a very correct way: courageous, manly.”

Ondo Gov’ship: Seventeen Political Parties Sign Peace Accord

Seventeen political parties and their gubernatorial candidates in Ondo State have committed to a peaceful and credible election by signing a peace accord ahead of next Saturday’s governorship election.

The signing ceremony took place in Akure and was organized by the National Peace Accord Committee, led by former military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar.

General Abubakar, speaking at the event, emphasized the importance of the peace accord in ensuring the integrity of the election process.

He urged all candidates and their parties to honor the principles of peace, fairness, and democracy throughout the electoral process.

“The signing of this peace accord binds the gubernatorial candidates and party leaders to support a peaceful, credible election,” he stated.

He further called on the candidates to accept the results if the election is deemed free, fair, and credible, and to seek peaceful and lawful means to address any post-election disputes.

“We hope that this election in Ondo will set a standard for future off-cycle elections in the country,” he added.

General Abdulsalami also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its preparations and praised the Nigeria Police Force, along with other security agencies, for their ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of voters, candidates, and electoral staff ahead of the election.

In his remarks, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu thanked the National Peace Committee for its efforts in promoting peace in Nigeria’s elections.

He pointed out that similar peace accords had proven successful in the past and that extending them to governorship races like Ondo’s was essential given the heightened tension in such elections.

Yakubu assured the public that there had been no major incidents in the state so far and expressed confidence that the collaborative efforts between INEC, security agencies, traditional leaders, and civil society would ensure a peaceful election.

Prof. Yakubu also highlighted the measures INEC had taken to address logistical challenges, particularly for remote and riverine communities in Ondo State, ensuring that no voter would be disenfranchised.

Kayode Egbetokun, the Inspector-General of Police, reassured the public of a neutral and vigilant security presence throughout the election.

He emphasized the police’s commitment to maintaining a level playing field for all political parties and ensuring the safety of voters and election materials.

Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the APC candidate and incumbent Governor of Ondo State, pledged his commitment to the peace accord, assuring the National Peace Committee that he would uphold the agreement and ensure the safety of all election stakeholders.

He called for continued peace and cooperation in the lead-up to the election and beyond.

54-Year-Old Duma Boko Sworn In As Botswana’s New President

Botswana officially inaugurated its new president, Duma Boko, on Friday, marking a new beginning after his overwhelming election victory that ended nearly 60 years of rule by the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP).

Boko, 54, took the oath of office at a grand ceremony in the national stadium in the capital, Gaborone, before thousands of jubilant citizens.

The event was also attended by several heads of state from southern Africa, including the presidents of Madagascar, Namibia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, who witnessed the historic occasion.

In his speech, Boko, a former human rights lawyer turned politician, emphasized the collective effort that led to his victory.

“I stand before you today as the living embodiment of your deep and true resolve. Together, we usher in a new political dawn.”

Boko, the leader of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), which is a left-wing coalition, won a decisive 36 seats in Botswana’s parliament in the October 30 elections.

This was a dramatic shift in the political landscape, as the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), which had held power since the country gained independence from Britain in 1966, secured only four seats.

Former President, Mokgweetsi Masisi, who had conceded defeat just a week prior, was also present at the ceremony, acknowledging the smooth transition of power.

Boko, dressed in the colors of the Botswana flag — a blue shirt and black tie — made a memorable entrance to the stadium, waving to the crowd from a vehicle, accompanied by galloping white horses.

For many in the crowd, the event symbolized a new era of unity and hope.

“The attendance of Batswana from all walks of life shows how united we are and committed to nation-building,” said Wabuya Keobonye, an 88-year-old taxi driver at the ceremony.

Boko’s decision to declare the day a public holiday allowed citizens from all over the country to join in the historic moment.

“Today is a special day for us as citizens of this nation, and the president’s decision to declare it a holiday allowed us to come together and witness this important event,” Keobonye added.

In the lead-up to the election, the country’s high unemployment rate and struggling economy were central issues for voters, especially among the younger population.

The election saw an impressive 80 percent voter turnout, with approximately 34 percent of the voters being young people.

“Youth are the leaders of today, not tomorrow,” said Ipotseng Negroes, a 35-year-old farmer who attended the inauguration.

“We showed up in large numbers because we want change. The power of the people of Botswana is loud and clear.”

Police Deny Allegations of Involvement In Robbery, Court Disruption

The Yobe State Police Command has dismissed claims published in an online news report alleging that two of its officers were involved in a robbery in Potiskum and that police operatives disrupted court proceedings to free the accused.

In a statement released on Friday, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, refuted the allegations made in the November 7 article titled, “Police Disrupt Court Proceedings, Free Colleagues Accused of Robbery in Yobe.” Abdulkarim called the report “misleading” and “malicious,” emphasizing that no police personnel were involved in any robbery incidents in Potiskum or elsewhere in the state.

The spokesperson clarified that the Yobe Police Command had no record of any robbery involving its officers, either in Potiskum or any other part of the state.

He further denied reports that police had invaded a magistrate’s court to free colleagues under arrest, asserting that the allegations were entirely false.

Abdulkarim explained that the incident referred to in the report stemmed from an accident on February 23, when a truck collided with a motorcycle in the Zangon Alhazai area of Potiskum.

According to Abdulkarim, the driver of the truck had sought bail, which was granted, but the police refused to release the vehicle due to an ongoing investigation into reckless driving.

A fracas ensued, during which a Nigerian Correctional Service officer, ASC Abubakar Umar, was arrested for obstruction.

The police spokesperson further explained that the Area Commander, acting in accordance with proper procedure, directed the personnel to return to the station, as the case involved a matter of fundamental human rights, which was outside the jurisdiction of the magistrate’s court.

“At no point did police personnel invade the court or forcibly retrieve colleagues,” Abdulkarim stressed.

In response to the media report, the police command called on the online platform to retract the story and issue a formal apology. They warned that failure to do so would result in legal action.

Meanwhile, the state chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for an investigation into the matter, demanding that the police respect court orders and ensure that any police officers involved in the incident be held accountable.

NBA Chairperson, Mrs. Altine Ibrahim, described the actions of the police as a serious breach of the law, stating that “no one is above the law.”

The controversy centers around an earlier incident where a police officer, who had reportedly been involved in the case, was removed from court proceedings, leading to further public scrutiny and demands for transparency.
