Anambra Local Govt Chairman Arrested In U.S Over Alleged $3 Million Romance Fraud

Franklin Ikechukwu Nwadialo, the newly elected chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area in Anambra State, Nigeria, was arrested in Texas over his involvement in a multi-million-dollar romance fraud scheme.

The 40-year-old local government leader was apprehended upon his arrival at a U.S. airport and now faces charges of wire fraud in connection with a fraud operation that allegedly swindled victims out of nearly $3.3 million.

Nwadialo, who was indicted in December 2023 by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Washington, is charged with 14 counts of wire fraud.

According to prosecutors, he posed as a military officer stationed overseas to deceive victims he met on dating sites such as Match, Zoosk, and Christian Café.

Using multiple aliases like “Giovanni,” Nwadialo gained the trust of his victims, leading them to believe they were in romantic relationships with him, before manipulating them into sending large sums of money.

U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman described the complexity of prosecuting romance scams involving overseas perpetrators, stating, “It’s often difficult to bring foreign defendants to justice, but through dedicated investigation, we’ve managed to apprehend Mr. Nwadialo.”

She added that Nwadialo’s alleged actions had defrauded victims of millions of dollars.

The indictment outlines several instances where Nwadialo convinced victims to send money under false pretenses.

In one case from 2020, he falsely claimed that he had been fined $1 million by the military for revealing his location and requested financial assistance to pay the fine.

In another case from 2019, he deceived a victim into transferring over $330,000 by pretending to need help moving funds related to his father’s death.

Nwadialo also allegedly targeted a third victim, leading her to believe that her money was being invested in cryptocurrency.

Under his direction, the victim transferred at least $270,000 into an account he controlled.

In yet another instance, he convinced a victim to send him at least $310,000 for supposed expenses related to his father’s funeral and his son’s education.

The charges against Nwadialo stem from his alleged use of wire communications to facilitate fraudulent transfers of funds from his victims to himself and his co-conspirators.

If convicted, Nwadialo faces up to 20 years in prison for each count of wire fraud.

While the charges remain allegations, Gorman emphasized that Nwadialo is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The case is being investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sok Jiang.

Court Invalidates Criminal Summons Against Edo Governor-Elect Over Alleged Certificate Forgery

An Abuja High Court has annulled a criminal summons issued on September 12 by a Wuse Magistrate Court against Senator Monday Okpebholo, accusing him of certificate forgery.

The court ruled that the summons, issued by Magistrate Abubakar Mukhtar, was beyond his jurisdiction and represented an error in law.

Justice Charles Agbaza, in a ruling delivered on Friday, agreed with Okpebholo’s counsel, Andrew Emwanta, that the criminal summons and the subsequent proceedings violated the senator’s fundamental right to a fair hearing under Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution.

The judge declared that the summons was illegal, unconstitutional, and should be quashed.

Senator Okpebholo, the APC candidate and governor-elect in the Edo State governorship election held on September 21, had challenged the summons issued by Magistrate Mukhtar.

The summons had required Okpebholo to appear in court on September 20, just a day before the governorship election, in response to allegations of providing conflicting birth dates on his nomination forms submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The case, brought against Okpebholo by Honesty Aginbatse, an indigene of Edo State, claimed that Okpebholo had falsely declared his date of birth in his nomination papers, which caused confusion over his true age.

However, Emwanta argued that the action was politically motivated and intended to prevent Okpebholo from standing for election by casting doubt on his eligibility.

In response, Emwanta filed an originating summons at the FCT High Court, seeking to quash the summons and all associated proceedings.

The lawyer contended that the summons was issued in bad faith and in violation of Okpebholo’s constitutional rights.

He argued that the case was a pre-election matter, and thus the jurisdiction for handling such issues lay with the Federal High Court, not the Magistrate Court.

In support of his client’s case, Emwanta presented evidence that Okpebholo had taken various steps to rectify any discrepancies regarding his date of birth.

The senator had sworn an affidavit in March 2022 to correct the birth date listed on his WASSCE certificate, which had mistakenly recorded August 29, 1972, instead of his actual birth date, August 1, 1977. Okpebholo had also made corrections on his Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) and had filed a Deed of Regularization of Personal Particulars at the Supreme Court Registry in July 2023.

Despite objections from Aginbatse, who filed a counter-affidavit urging the court to dismiss the application, and the absence of Magistrate Mukhtar from the proceedings, Justice Agbaza ruled in favor of Okpebholo.

The judge stated that the magistrate had failed to properly consider the evidence presented by Okpebholo before issuing the summons.

He cited a previous Supreme Court decision to support his ruling, confirming that the proceedings were improper and illegal.

As a result of the judgment, the court not only quashed the summons but also prohibited Magistrate Mukhtar from continuing with any further proceedings on the case.

While acknowledging the magistrate’s discretion to schedule hearings, Justice Agbaza made it clear that the case was beyond the jurisdiction of the Magistrate Court.

Elon Musk’s Transgender Daughter To Leave US After Trump’s Victory

Vivian Wilson, the 20-year-old transgender daughter of billionaire Elon Musk, has announced her decision to leave the United States following Donald Trump’s recent victory in the presidential election.

Vivian, who legally changed her name from Xavier Musk in 2022 and severed ties with her father, expressed her concerns about the political climate under Trump’s return to office in a post on Threads.

In her message, Wilson wrote, “I don’t see my future in the United States. I’ve thought this for a while, but yesterday confirmed it for me. Even if Trump is only in office for four years, and even if anti-trans laws don’t come into play, the people who voted for him aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.”

Vivian Musk, born Xavier Musk in 2004, filed to change both her name and gender in April 2022.

In court filings, she stated, “I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape, or form.”

She also chose her mother’s maiden name, Wilson, as her new surname.

Her estranged father, Elon Musk, a known Trump supporter, has been open about his strained relationship with his daughter.

Musk, who has fathered 12 children and is vocal about his political views, has publicly criticized Vivian’s decision to transition.

He has made derogatory comments about her, referring to her as a “communist” and claiming she viewed wealth as “inherently evil.”

Musk has also made controversial statements about gender dysphoria and puberty blockers, saying he felt misled when Vivian was prescribed the medication, which he referred to as “sterilisation drugs.”

In previous comments, he described the transition as “incredibly evil” and said those who promote it should be imprisoned, adding that he felt he had “lost” his son.

Vivian, in response, described her father as largely absent during her upbringing and claimed that his criticisms of her femininity and queerness were part of a larger pattern of dismissing her identity.

“He doesn’t know what I was like as a child because he simply wasn’t there. I was relentlessly harassed for my femininity and queerness, and I’ve been reduced to a stereotype. I think that says a lot about how he views queer people and children in general.”

Law Firm Drops Abuja Bolt Driver As Client After Apology To APGA Rep Member

The law firm of Deji Adeyanju & Partners has severed its legal relationship with Stephen Abuwatseye, an Abuja-based e-hailing driver, following his public apology to Alex Ikwechegh, the controversial House of Representatives member for Aba North and South, who had assaulted him.

The decision comes in the wake of a viral video that showed Ikwechegh physically assaulting Abuwatseye, a Bolt driver, during an altercation. In the footage, Ikwechegh can be heard boasting about his power, even threatening to make Abuwatseye “disappear.”

The incident sparked a widespread public outcry, with many Nigerians calling for Ikwechegh’s removal from office.

Ikwechegh, after facing public backlash, later apologized, acknowledging that his actions were not in line with the expected conduct of a public official.

However, the apology was met with mixed reactions, with some feeling it was insufficient given the severity of his behavior.

The matter escalated when Abuwatseye, despite being the victim, issued his own apology to Ikwechegh, which many viewed as an attempt to downplay the gravity of the assault.

In a video shared on Thursday, Abuwatseye expressed regret for his role in provoking Ikwechegh, stating: “I want to apologize to him for whatever I must have said or done to provoke him to that level of anger.”

Abuwatseye’s apology quickly garnered criticism, as many felt it undermined efforts to hold Ikwechegh accountable for his actions.

The situation became even more contentious when Abuwatseye urged Nigerians to “forgive and forget,” invoking a religious sentiment: “For there is no justice without forgiveness.”

In response to the development, Abuwatseye’s legal team, led by Deji Adeyanju & Partners, issued a statement announcing their withdrawal from the case.

The law firm explained that Abuwatseye’s recent actions, including the apology, compromised their ethical standards.

“After careful consideration, we have made the decision to withdraw our legal representation in order to protect our professional integrity and maintain the highest ethical standard in the legal profession,” the statement read.

The firm, however, expressed good wishes for Abuwatseye, while reaffirming its commitment to fighting for the rights of marginalized individuals.

“We wish Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye the very best, while we assure the general public of our continuous commitment towards protecting the rights of the oppressed and indigent members of society,” the statement concluded.

In the meantime, Ikwechegh faces legal charges, including abuse of office, assault, and threats to life.

He was granted bail by a Chief Magistrate Court in Kuje, Abuja, but the case is still ongoing, with the next court date scheduled for November 8.

FG Announces Free Cesarean Sections For Vulnerable Women

The Federal Ministry of Health has unveiled a new initiative aimed at offering free cesarean sections to poor and vulnerable women across Nigeria.

The initiative, called the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII), was launched at the Joint Annual Health Review (JAR) event held in Abuja.

Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, described the program as a bold step toward reducing both maternal and newborn mortality rates in the country.

He emphasized that the initiative would focus on addressing the high rates of maternal deaths, particularly in areas with the greatest need.

A key aspect of the MAMII program, according to Prof. Pate, is its broad coverage, which includes services offered by both public and private healthcare facilities approved by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

The goal is to ensure that women in underserved regions have access to safe and timely cesarean sections when needed, significantly reducing the risk of maternal mortality.

The minister also highlighted the stark challenge of maternal mortality in Nigeria, noting that 172 local government areas account for more than half of the country’s maternal deaths.

To combat this, MAMII will direct resources to these high-burden areas, prioritizing support where it’s needed most.

Prof. Pate further explained that the NHIA, in partnership with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and State Health Insurance Agencies (SHIAs), will manage the reimbursement system, ensuring that healthcare providers can sustainably deliver cesarean section services under the scheme.

In addition, the minister stressed the importance of community health workers in achieving the program’s goals, noting that this aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s plan to recruit 120,000 additional health workers to strengthen primary healthcare across the country.

Obi Donates N60 Million To Anambra University, Nursing School

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has donated N60 million to support education and healthcare in Anambra State.

On Thursday, Obi presented a donation of N50 million to the University on the Niger (UNINIGER) in Umunya, located in the Iyi-Enu campus in Idemili North Local Government Area, to aid infrastructure development at the institution’s take-off campus.

In addition, Obi donated N10 million to the School of Nursing at Iyienu Mission Hospital, Ogidi.

During his visit to the university and nursing school, Obi emphasized that his financial contributions were investments in vital sectors like education, healthcare, and poverty reduction, which are critical for sustainable development.

“Our health and education systems have faced long-term neglect, resulting in severe challenges that affect the nation’s progress,” Obi remarked, stressing that the solutions lie in strategic investments.

Obi also highlighted the dire shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly doctors and nurses, in the country.

He called for more investment in training medical personnel. “We have a shortage of doctors and nurses, far below the World Health Organization’s recommendations. We must focus on improving the training of healthcare workers to address this challenge.”

The former governor of Anambra, whose administration made significant strides in education and healthcare, also encouraged the students at the institutions to value both academic excellence and strong moral character.

“The value of your qualifications lies not just in your academic performance but also in your integrity and character,” he told them.

Bishop Owen Nwokolo, Anglican Bishop on the Niger, expressed his gratitude to Obi for his continuous support of education in the state, recalling how Obi’s intervention revitalized the education sector by returning schools to the Church and ensuring they thrived.

Bishop Nwokolo also noted that Iyienu School of Nursing was one of the first beneficiaries of Obi’s support, receiving accreditation during his tenure as governor, and has continued to receive backing from him ever since.

Prof. Chinedu Osita Nebo, Vice Chancellor of the University on the Niger, praised Obi for his consistent commitment to education, which he said has significantly influenced the South-East region.

He credited Obi with helping raise awareness about the importance of education in the Eastern states, contributing to their improved academic performance nationwide.

A medical student at the university, Mr. Ikenna Offor, expressed his appreciation for Obi’s efforts, sharing how Obi’s past support had led to the development of key infrastructure, including hostels, staff quarters, a theater complex, classrooms, and emergency facilities at the school.

Offor thanked Obi for his generosity and support, hoping that his visits would continue.

Obi was accompanied by several dignitaries, including Professor Stella Okunna and other prominent figures, who joined in acknowledging his contributions to the development of education and healthcare in the state.

How My Late Wife Secured My Release From Prison – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has opened up about his time in prison and the pivotal role his late wife, Stella, played in securing his release during the military regime of General Sani Abacha.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin, the Edo State capital, Obasanjo, now 87, fondly recalled how his wife worked tirelessly on his behalf.

He was arrested and jailed by the Abacha government in 1995, accused of being involved in an alleged coup plot, though he consistently maintained his innocence.

After Abacha’s death, Obasanjo was released by the regime of General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who later became president.

“My late wife went everywhere to ensure that I came out of prison alive. She was in Vatican City, France, and other parts of the world. No amount of honour would be too much for the role she played. I had it all coming out of prison.”

Obasanjo expressed deep gratitude for his wife’s unrelenting efforts, adding, “We were planning for her 68th birthday anniversary but never had it before she died. It was very painful for me in particular and for all of us in my family.”

Reflecting on his wife’s passing, which occurred during his second term as president, Obasanjo noted how much he valued the contributions she made to his public life.

“I had a woman who made tremendous contributions to my achievements in public life,” he said.

The former president also took the opportunity to thank the government and people of Edo State for honouring his late wife with the naming of the hospital, noting that her sacrifices would never be forgotten.

Obasanjo praised the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki for its achievements, particularly the completion of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital.

He described the facility as “first-class treatment for any ailment,” commending Obaseki for “starting well and finishing well. With this kind of edifice, I can say that the governor started well and is finishing well.”

In his remarks, Obasanjo also reflected on his past relationship with former Governor John Oyegun, who had worked closely with him during his tenure as president.

“I have worked in the past with the likes of John Oyegun. He was a fantastic permanent secretary,” Obasanjo said, recalling some of their shared experiences. He also expressed his admiration for the current governor.

“More grace to the elbows of the governor. With this hospital, you’re assured of first-class treatment for any ailment.”

NNPP Crisis: Gov. Yusuf Reaffirms Strong Bond With Kwankwaso, Slams “Stand on Your Own” Faction

Governor Yusuf and Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has dismissed rumours of a rift with his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, affirming that their relationship remains strong and grounded in mutual respect.

During a meeting with journalists on Wednesday, Governor Yusuf addressed growing speculation within the Kwankwasiyya movement and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) about a supposed falling-out between him and Kwankwaso.

These rumours suggest that Kwankwaso is exerting excessive influence over Yusuf’s administration, with critics even alleging that the senator is effectively serving a “third term by proxy.”

Yusuf refuted these claims, emphasizing the enduring strength of his alliance with Kwankwaso.

“There is no truth in the rumours of a misunderstanding between us. In my 40 years of knowing him, tell me, who among politicians has stayed with someone this long and still maintained harmony?” he asked.

The rumours of discord gained momentum following comments from Aliyu Sani Madakin-Gini, the House of Representatives member representing Dala Federal Constituency, who recently parted ways with Kwankwaso.

Madakin-Gini alleged that the disagreement stemmed from issues related to a drugs contract and the state scholarship scheme.

However, Governor Yusuf rejected these allegations, asserting his independence while acknowledging the significant role Kwankwaso has played in his political journey.

“To now suggest that I am somehow chained by Kwankwaso is simply unfair. Even just two days ago, I visited him and told him about these rumours. I said, ‘I am surprised. Do people expect me to insult the man who stood by me?’”

Amidst the growing speculation, a faction within the NNPP, calling itself “Abba Tsaya da Kafarka” (meaning “Abba, stand on your own”), has been urging Yusuf to distance himself from Kwankwaso and make decisions independently. Yusuf strongly criticized this faction, calling their position insulting.

“This ‘stand on your own’ slogan is the greatest insult I have faced as governor. It implies that I should repay good with bad. What has Kwankwaso done to me to deserve this? All the good we are doing for the people is overlooked, and instead, they promote this divisive rhetoric.”

In response to the internal party tensions, the NNPP’s state leadership suspended Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, Secretary to the State Government, and Muhammad Diggol, Commissioner of Transportation, accusing them of supporting the “Abba Tsaya da Kafarka” campaign.

Both officials have denied the allegations.

“It’s as if people do not understand the role Kwankwaso has played. Where were these critics when he was laying the foundation for what we are doing now?” Yusuf questioned.

The governor also expressed frustration with media reports claiming he had ignored multiple calls from Kwankwaso.

“They said Kwankwaso called me more than 30 times, and I refused to answer. Where did they get this from?. If not for my respect for journalists, I would have taken the person who wrote that to court. But I know, and Kwankwaso knows, that it’s all lies. There is no rift.”

Finally, Yusuf appealed to his supporters to reject divisive rhetoric and emphasized the need for unity within the party.

“As of today, I don’t want to hear ‘stand on your own’ in Kano State or anywhere in Nigeria. We were raised to respect elders, not to insult them.”
