Gov. Aiyedatiwa Dwarfs FG, Raises Ondo Minimum Wage To N73,000

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the upcoming November 16 governorship election, has approved a new minimum wage of N73,000 for civil servants in the state.

This announcement comes shortly after the federal government agreed to a national minimum wage of N70,000 in a deal with organized labor.

Speaking at the APC flag-off campaign event in Ondo West Local Government Area, Aiyedatiwa, alongside his deputy, Chief Olayide Adelami, emphasized his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare.

He noted that, despite the federal benchmark, Ondo State would exceed the national figure by setting its minimum wage at N73,000.

Advertorial

“Our civil servants have been consistently motivated through regular salary payments, training programs, and promotions. We have decided to implement the new minimum wage, but instead of the N70,000 set by the federal government, we will offer N73,000,” Aiyedatiwa stated. He also urged citizens to turn out in large numbers on November 16 to support the APC.

Aiyedatiwa took the opportunity to highlight several developmental projects initiated under his leadership, particularly in the areas of rural infrastructure, education, healthcare, and security.

Advertorial

He noted the construction of rural roads aimed at enhancing farmers’ access to urban markets, thereby improving food security.

The governor also mentioned the renovation of schools and employment of more teachers to improve the education system.

The governor further discussed security improvements in the state, notably through the Amotekun security initiative and the establishment of forest rangers to protect farmers from attacks.

Advertorial

In the health sector, Aiyedatiwa emphasized his administration’s efforts to curb the “japa” syndrome by increasing the salaries of medical personnel to retain talent in the state.

Beyond these efforts, the governor said his administration has prioritized youth empowerment, launching various programs to encourage entrepreneurship and self-reliance.

He also revealed ongoing renovations of the Akure sports stadium, aimed at enhancing sporting activities in the state.

Advertorial

Hon. Abiola Makinde, Director General of Aiyedatiwa’s campaign council, praised the governor’s performance, describing his administration as masses-oriented.

Makinde urged voters to use their PVCs on election day to ensure Aiyedatiwa’s return to office, assuring them that the governor would continue to deliver on his promises.

Ade Adetimehin, Ondo APC Chairman, expressed confidence in the party’s victory, predicting that Aiyedatiwa would secure 80 percent of the vote in the upcoming election.

Advertorial

He encouraged party members to canvass support at the grassroots level to ensure a landslide victory for the APC.

Mortuary Tax Not For Revenue Generation – Enugu Govt Clarifies

The Enugu State Government has clarified that the Mortuary Tax imposed in the state is not intended as a revenue-generating measure but rather aims to discourage the extended preservation of corpses in mortuaries.

This explanation came from the Executive Chairman of the Enugu State Internal Revenue Service (ESIRS), Mr. Emmanuel Nnamani, in response to an online circular that has recently sparked public debate.

Advertorial

The circular, addressed to all mortuary attendants, cited the provisions of Section 34 of the Birth, Deaths, and Burials Law Cap 15, Revised Laws of Enugu State 2004, which authorizes the implementation of the tax.

It stated that a fee of N40 is charged once a corpse is not buried within 24 hours of death. This amount increases daily for as long as the body remains in the mortuary.

Advertorial

“Ensure that owners of corpses make the necessary payments before collecting the bodies for burial and remit the sum to the Enugu State IGR account under mortuary tax,” the circular advised.

In addressing public concerns, Nnamani emphasized that this tax is not new, having been part of state laws for years.

He refuted claims that the amount was N40,000, clarifying that it is a modest N40 per day and that mortuary owners, not grieving families, are responsible for paying the tax.

“If a body stays in the mortuary for 100 days, the mortuary is expected to pay N4,000 to the state. The tax is designed to discourage people from unnecessarily keeping corpses in the mortuary,” Nnamani explained.

He also criticized social media users for altering the date on the circular to give the impression that the tax was a new policy, adding that no one has ever been denied the right to bury their deceased family members due to this tax.

FG Grants Fuel Marketers Direct Access To Dangote Refinery For PMS Lifting

The Federal Government has authorized fuel marketers to lift premium motor spirit (PMS) directly from the Dangote Refinery without the involvement of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

This decision was announced on Friday by Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, following a directive from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) and the implementation of a new naira-based sales mechanism.

Advertorial

Edun, who chairs the Implementation Committee on the Sales of Crude Oil and Refined Products in Naira, highlighted that this new Direct Purchase Model allows petroleum product marketers to buy PMS directly from local refineries.

This change marks a significant shift from the previous system, where the NNPCL was the sole purchaser and distributor of refined products from the refineries.

Advertorial

The minister emphasized that this new approach will enable marketers to negotiate commercial terms directly with refineries, thereby promoting a more competitive market and facilitating a smoother supply chain for petroleum products.

Just In: PDP Gets New Acting National Chairman

The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Friday as the Integrity Faction announced the appointment of Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the party’s new Acting National Chairman.

Yayari, PDP New Acting Chairman

Earlier on Friday, the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), led by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, suspended two key officials—National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade SAN and National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba—on charges of anti-party activities.

Advertorial

In a swift response, a rival faction within the NWC, represented by Ologunagba, issued a statement announcing the suspension of Damagum and National Secretary Sam Anyanwu for similar accusations.

Ologunagba, speaking on behalf of the Integrity Faction, declared that Mohammed’s appointment would take effect immediately, in accordance with the party’s constitution, amended in 2017.

Advertorial

The statement reads: “Following the suspension of Ambassador Illiya Damagum as the Acting National Chairman of our great party, the PDP, the National Working Committee has approved the appointment of Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as Acting National Chairman. This appointment takes immediate effect and is in line with the provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).”

BREAKING: Court Restrains PDP NEC, BoT From Removing Damagum As Acting National Chairman

Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a ruling preventing the National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from removing Umar Damagum as the party’s Acting National Chairman.

The court’s restraining order ensures that Damagum will remain in the position until the party’s national convention, which is scheduled for December of next year.

Advertorial

The ruling came in response to a lawsuit filed by Senator Umar El-Gash Maina, the Yobe State PDP Chairman, who alleged that certain stakeholders within the party were holding secret meetings to forcefully replace Damagum with a former Kogi State deputy governor, Phillip Salawu. Maina argued that these actions were in violation of the PDP’s constitution.

In his judgment, Justice Lifu emphasized that, according to Articles 42, 47, and 67 of the PDP Constitution, national officers can only be elected at a national convention.

Advertorial

The judge agreed with the plaintiff, stating that Damagum could only be replaced through a court order or during the national convention.

The plaintiff had previously written two letters to the party’s National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, to raise concerns about the clandestine meetings, but these letters went unaddressed.

As a result, Maina sought legal intervention to protect the PDP Constitution and ensure that the party adhered to its rules, particularly regarding the rotation of the national chairmanship between the North and South.

Justice Lifu also rejected the defendants’ objections, which claimed that Maina had no legal standing to bring the suit and that the court lacked jurisdiction.

The judge ruled that Maina, as a PDP member with a valid membership card, had the right to protect the party’s constitution and that his concerns were justiciable.

Justice Nyako To Continue Nnamdi Kanu’s Case As Chief Judge Denies Recusal Appeal

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Justice John Tsoho, has denied the request by Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), seeking to have Justice Binta Nyako recuse herself from his case.

Justice Tsoho returned the case to Justice Nyako, citing her previous handling of the matter since 2015, making her the most suitable to continue overseeing it.

He noted that two other judges had already recused themselves from the case.

Advertorial

Tsoho further directed that if Kanu still wishes for Justice Nyako’s recusal, he must file a formal motion on Notice, accompanied by an affidavit outlining the specific reasons for the request.

This motion must be served on the prosecution team, after which Kanu will appear before Justice Nyako, who will then review and determine the matter.

Kanu’s Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the court’s decision to Channels Television, adding that they are awaiting official communication and a new hearing date from the court.

Advertorial

Earlier, Justice Nyako had stepped down from the case following an oral application by Kanu and his legal team, where Kanu expressed dissatisfaction with her handling of the case and accused her of ignoring directives from the Supreme Court.

INEC Should Resume Subvention To Parties For Fair Competition, Says ZLP

Delta State Chairman of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Mr. Emeka Nkwoala, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to resume the payment of subvention to political parties in order to promote a healthy multi-party democracy.

Nkwoala made the appeal on Thursday during the party’s state congress in Asaba, where delegates were elected for the ZLP’s upcoming national convention.

Advertorial

Speaking at the event, Nkwoala noted that smaller parties like the ZLP struggle financially compared to larger parties, which often receive backing from elected officials within their ranks.

“Before now, INEC used to provide subvention to all political parties, but they stopped. They need to create an enabling environment for all parties to foster a multi-party system and ensure a vibrant democracy,” he said.

Nkwoala also criticized early discussions surrounding the 2027 elections, emphasizing the need to focus on holding recently elected leaders accountable.

Advertorial

“I am concerned when people begin to talk about 2027 elections when it has been less than a year since we elected new leaders. Instead of discussing the next election, we should focus on ensuring these leaders fulfill the promises they made during the campaign.”

He urged citizens to engage with political office holders and demand accountability, noting that elected officials are receiving more revenue from the federal account and should be transparent about how the funds are being used.

Nkwoala further expressed dissatisfaction with the federal government’s handling of the economy and called on state governments to alleviate the hardships facing the people.

During the congress, five delegates were elected from Delta State to attend the party’s national convention in Abuja.

Mr. Lucky Ukurabore, the ZLP’s National Youth Leader and Chairman of the Planning Committee, confirmed the election results in the presence of INEC representatives, including Barrister Mrs. Ann Nwoko, who observed the proceedings.

Advertorial

Ukurabore commended INEC for ensuring a smooth and transparent consensus election.
