Presidency Alleges ‘Civilian Coup’ Amidst Planned Nationwide Protest

The Bola Tinubu administration has labeled the planned nationwide protests against bad governance, scheduled to begin on August 1, 2024, as a “civilian coup” attempt.

The government claims that supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, are behind the upcoming “Days of Rage” protests, aimed at addressing issues such as hunger, economic hardship, and misgovernance.

Advertorial

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Tinubu, issued a statement accusing Peter Obi’s supporters of inciting chaos.

Onanuga stated, “Don’t be fooled: the malcontents planning to stage nationwide protests are supporters of Peter Obi, the failed presidential candidate of the Labour Party. And he should be held responsible for whatever crisis emanates from the action.”

Advertorial

Onanuga also linked the current protest planners to the organizers of the #EndSARS movement in October 2020, which began as a protest against police brutality but was allegedly hijacked by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

He claimed that the same individuals, now supporters of Peter Obi, are spreading hashtags such as #EndBadGovernance, #TinubuMustGo, and #Revolution2024.

Advertorial

Onanuga accused the protesters of seeking to destabilize Nigeria due to their dissatisfaction with the election results.

He warned that their actions could be seen as treasonous, saying, “wanting to end an elected government is high treason. Wanting revolution is a call for a coup d’etat, which is also high treason.”

The statement further highlighted several individuals allegedly involved in promoting the protests, including an anonymous internet radio host and other social media users who support Peter Obi.

Onanuga urged security agents to investigate these “agents of destabilisation.”

The Tinubu administration emphasized its efforts to address economic challenges, including raising the minimum wage, disbursing student loans, distributing palliatives, and investing in agriculture.

Onanuga concluded by calling on Nigerian citizens to consider the government’s efforts and wait for the next election in 2027 to seek any change in leadership.

“President Tinubu has a four-year mandate to run his agenda. Those calling for protest should wait till 2027 to either re-elect him or elect their Messiah, Mr Peter Obi,” the statement read.

Reps To Investigate Dangote, Lafarge Over Rising Cement Prices

The Joint Committee of the House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the rising prices of cement in Nigeria, demanding that major producers, Dangote Cement Company and Lafarge Africa PLC, provide detailed documentation on their production costs.

At a public hearing in Abuja, Rep. Jonathan Gaza (APC-Nasarawa), the committee’s chairman, called for transparency from the companies regarding their production costs from 2020 to the present.

He stated that the committee plans to visit the production plants to verify the cost structures and determine a fair market price for cement, which currently exceeds N10,000 in many parts of the country.

Advertorial

Gaza requested the companies to disclose their average daily consumption of materials such as coal, gas, gypsum, limestone, clay, and laterite, along with their daily cement production rates.

He also asked for details of all imported and local components used in cement production, their prices in both naira and dollars, and a summary of monthly cement production and pricing from 2019 to date.

Additionally, the companies were asked to provide their audited accounts, customs duties paid, tax waivers, and other incentives received.

Advertorial

Rep. Dabo Ismail (APC-Bauchi State), a committee member, highlighted the significant profits made by Dangote Cement Company despite sourcing most raw materials locally.

He noted that the company declared profits of N524 billion in 2022, N553 billion in 2023, and N166.4 billion so far in 2024.

Ismail questioned why cement prices continued to rise while producers were making substantial profits.

In response, Dangote Cement Company’s Group Managing Director, Mr. Arvind Pathack, explained that 95% of their production costs are linked to imports or foreign exchange.

He cited a 100% to 333% increase in the prices of major input materials, including gas, AGO, gypsum, imported coal, spare parts, new trucks, tyres, and petrol.

Pathack pointed out that the company faces challenges such as paying for gas and explosives in dollars, inadequate forex provisions from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), logistics issues due to poor road conditions, and high delivery costs.

Pathack also mentioned that the company incurs significant forex losses, approximately N150 billion annually, due to insufficient forex for trade obligations and high-interest rates on loans.

Advertorial

He added that the naira’s devaluation by over 220% between May 2023 and June 2024, along with other issues like insecurity and unreliable public power supply, have exacerbated their costs.

Despite these challenges, Pathack asserted that the current factory price of cement is around N7,200, attributing higher market prices to retailers beyond the company’s control.

The committee urged the companies to reassess their policies and operations to help reduce cement prices in Nigeria.

The Chairman, Gaza criticized the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) for its inaction, blaming the high prices on middlemen exploiting the market.

He expressed hope that the committee’s engagement with the cement producers would result in lower prices for consumers.

“We are extremely hopeful that this engagement will lead to a reduction in the price of cement. FCCPC has slept on their functions so far; their inactivity and non-responsiveness to price is what has put Nigeria where we are today,” Gaza stated.

Nigeria In Deep Crisis, Dele Momodu Urges Tinubu To Heed Ndume’s Advice

Dele Momodu, the publisher of Ovation International, has issued a stern advisory to President Bola Tinubu, highlighting the severe economic and political challenges facing Nigeria.

Advertorial

In a pointed open letter titled “Urgent Message for President Tinubu,” Momodu emphasized the critical need for leadership discipline and urged the President to listen to Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South.

Momodu expressed his concern over Nigeria’s current state, urging Tinubu to enforce discipline among his cabinet members, specifically calling for sanctions against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for alleged disrespect in the Fubara matter.

Advertorial

He began his letter by stating, “Your Excellency, I have decided to write this open letter to you as a concerned friend and brother. As you’re aware, I’m a member of the opposition but you and I have had a long history together. I owe you only one thing, TRUTH.”

Momodu highlighted several pressing issues:
1. Economic Crisis: He warned that Nigeria’s economy is on the brink of collapse, citing reckless spending as a major issue. “You’ve been wasting too much money at a time that requires absolute frugality,” he wrote, criticizing expenditures on presidential jets, monuments, and cash palliatives.

Advertorial

2. Need for Performance: Momodu argued that the best assurance for Tinubu’s second term is effective performance. He advised investing in vocational skills for youth, boosting local agriculture, and upgrading educational institutions. He cautioned against the unhealthy practice of distributing cash through politicians.

3. Importance of Honest Advisors: He urged Tinubu to pay attention to sincere advisors like Senator Ndume, warning of the dangers ahead and the pitfalls of hero-worship by National Assembly members.

4. Disciplinary Action: Momodu called for strict discipline within the administration, specifically urging Tinubu to sanction Nyesom Wike for his public disrespect. “You need to sanction him before he throws Nigeria into total chaos,” he stated.

Momodu emphasized that his letter was not merely a suggestion but a record of the true state of affairs, hoping that some of Tinubu’s friends would convey the gravity of the situation to him in a sober moment.

NLC, CSOs Dismiss House Of Reps’ 50% Salary Cut As Inadequate Amid Rising Hardship

The House of Representatives has announced a six-month salary cut of 50% to aid the federal government with ₦648 million for tackling food insufficiency and soaring food prices.

This decision was made during a plenary session in Abuja after a motion was moved by Ibrahim Isiaka (APC-Ogun State).

Advertorial

However, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and various civil society organizations, including ActionAid and Yiaga Africa, were quick to criticize the move.

They argued that the primary issue lies not in the lawmakers’ salaries but in their substantial allowances, which they suggested should be halved to have a meaningful impact.

Advertorial

Following the resolution, the House also appealed to Nigerians for patience with President Bola Tinubu’s administration in addressing the nation’s challenges.

The motion emphasized the need for peace, constructive dialogue, and cooperation to resolve ongoing issues, including insecurity, unemployment, and poverty.

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who supported the salary cut motion, stated that protests would not solve the hunger problem.

Advertorial

Instead, he called for support of government policies, emphasizing the need for sacrifices during these tough times.

Despite the lawmakers’ gesture, the NLC and other civil society leaders voiced their dissatisfaction.

An anonymous NLC leader highlighted that the real issue is the lawmakers’ allowances, which far exceed their salaries.

The leader suggested a permanent reduction in allowances until the economy improves.

Advertorial

Yiaga Africa’s Executive Director, Samson Itodo, described the salary cut as symbolic but insufficient.

He stressed the need for the National Assembly to hold the executive accountable for economic policies and focus on reducing commodity prices.

Andrew Mamedu, Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, acknowledged the step as positive but minor.

He emphasized the necessity of addressing allowances, constituency projects, and overall government expenditure.

Advertorial

Mamedu called for a comprehensive reduction in the cost of governance, aligning with public expectations.
