Obasanjo Breaks Silence Over Oyo Monarchs Controversy

Former President Olusegun Olusegun Obasanjo says he was told that traditional rulers in Oyo don’t respect governor Seyi Makinde.

He said this while reacting to the controversies generated by his order to monarchs during the inauguration of two projects in Iseyin, Oyo State, last Friday.

Obasanjo was a special guest of honour at the inauguration of the road projects constructed by Governor Makinde.

However, rather than the projects, it was Obasanjo’s order to traditional rulers at the occasion to stand and then sit as depicted in a video that went viral, that grabbed the headlines.

Yoruba groups, monarchs and other critics have accused Obasanjo of disrespecting the traditional institution with the way he treated the kings at the occasion.

Taiwo, one of the former wives of the former President also appealed to the traditional institutions in Yorubaland to forgive her former husband in a statement on Sunday.

However, in an interview with Premium Times, Obasanjo justified his action.

He said he ordered the traditional rulers to stand during the occasion because they refused to do so during his arrival alongside Governor Makinde at the event.

He said: “I arrived at the event venue with the governor. As we arrived, every other person at the venue rose, but they (the monarchs) remained seated. I was surprised because I considered that a breach of protocol and disrespect for the governor.

“It later became the turn of the governor to speak. As he rose, every other person at the venue, including me, stood up as demanded by protocol and in respect for the governor and his office. Again, the Obas refused to rise. They all remained seated.

“I then asked people around whether that was the practice in Oyo State. I was told the Obas have always displayed disrespect for their governor. I wondered where they got that from and then decided to speak to them about it.

“As far as I am concerned, there is the constitution and there is culture. By our constitution, the governor is the leader of a state. Everyone must respect him no matter his or her status or age. He deserves respect no matter how young he is and protocols must be observed.

“That was why I spoke to them the way I did. I wanted them to realize that it is not part of Yoruba culture to disrespect authorities. Respect begets respect and they must learn to deal with their governor with respect if they want to be respected in return.

“I respect traditional rulers and even when I was President and till today, I treat them with reverence. I prostrate, bow and knee before them as necessary. I respect our culture. But let us also know that there is a Constitution which puts a chairman as head of a local government, a governor as head of a state and a president as head of our country. Whatever we do must be in respect for that arrangement. I am saying there is culture and there is constitution. One must not disturb the other.”

Kidnappers Abduct 14 Travellers In Enugu

Kidnappers have intensified their deadly operations at the notorious Enugu-Ugwuogo-Opi-Nsukka Road in Enugu State with the abduction of 14 persons, Friday evening, on the busy road.

The victims were said to be travelling in a fully loaded bus to Obollo-Afor from Enugu late evening, when the criminals struck.

The occupants of the bus, including the driver, were said to have been kidnapped by the hoodlums while two lucky ladies, who hid under the vehicle, escaped.

Advertorial

A driver, who plies the route, but pleaded anonymity, confirmed that the two ladies hid under the bus while the other passengers were marched into the bush by the gunmen.

This came as police sources in Enugu said operatives were making frantic efforts to round up some notorious criminals suspected to have invaded Enugu from a neighbouring state and recruited both some local criminals and herders to perpetrate the act.

Police efforts reportedly paid off, last week, as over 28 suspected criminals, mainly kidnappers, were killed during a dawn operation and dangerous weapons, including AK-47 rifles used by the criminals in terrorizing the state were recovered.

A driver working with a popular motor company told Vanguard: “It is dangerous plying the Ugwuogo-Opi-Nsukka Road in late hours. One of our drivers was kidnapped on Friday with his passengers. They were all kidnapped except two lucky ladies who hid under the bus.

“They were able to escape because it was raining and it was also late in the evening.
Nobody has heard anything from the abductors till now. We are afraid. That road is now a death trap, it is not safe at all.”

A concerned citizen lecturing at the University of Nigeria, Enugu campus lamented that kidnapping regularly takes place on the busy road despite the road blocks mounted strategically by both the army and police.

According to him, “We are suspecting foul play on the part of security agencies. How can these daredevils continue to operate freely on that road with the huge presence of security agencies.

“They have no fewer then four road blocks across the road, yet nothing has been done to stop the havoc going on there daily.

“This should be a test case for the new Commissioner of Police in Enugu State because if he cannot stem it, let the authorities replace him with a more pragmatic and battle-ready officer that will save us from these criminals.”

Contacted, Enugu State Police Command said it has no such report.

According to the command’s spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, “There is no such situation known or reported to the command at the moment. However, while we are making frantic efforts to verify the veracity of the information, we urge the person(s) with information on the exact location, time and mode of occurrence of the alleged incident to avail us of the same for necessary police actions.

“Meanwhile, the command remains undeterred in her quest to flush out unrepentant violent criminals in every part of the state.”

Ondo Police Commissioner Orders Probe Of Alleged Assault On Commissioner

Ondo State Police Commissioner, Asabi Abiodun, has ordered an investigation into the alleged assault on the state Women Affairs Commissioner, Dr Adebunmi Osadahun, by a ward chairman of the All Progressive Congress in Arigidi, Akoko North West, Olumide Awolumate, during the distribution of palliatives.

Recall that the ward chairman reportedly attached the commissioner during the exercise alleged to have been shrouded in secrecy.

However, the ward chairman has since clarified that the commissioner and his son came to his house to attack him in the presence of a police officer.

However, the state police commissioner, in a statement by the command’s spokesperson, Funmi Odunlami, in Akure, the state capital, condemned the attack on the commissioner and ordered a probe.

The statement said that “preliminary investigation reveals that the Commissioner, who was in the Akoko area to see to the distribution of state palliatives, was attacked by the assailant named Awolumate Olumide while having a meeting with some of their party members in the area.

“The CP has ordered that a thorough investigation be carried out and the case transferred to the SCID, Akure, for further probe into what led to the assault.

Meanwhile, the attacker, Awolumate, said, “I was assaulted in my house by the power-drunk Commissioner for Women Affairs with her son in the presence of a police officer.

“I was in my house relaxing when the commissioner came with her son, one other boy, and a police officer.

“The police officer told me they needed my attention at the station in Oke Agbe, and before I could respond, the commissioner’s son pounced on me and tore my clothes, and the commissioner also joined in beating me.

“The police officer is still here, and I have resisted arrest, and I don’t know why they had to descend on me hand in hand.”

Awolumate said that there was an inequitable distribution of palliatives, which many people, including elders in the council, have been complaining about, while some residents even boycotted the exercise.

It’s a planned job to embarrass the commissioner-aides
However, aides to the commissioner ‘rubbished’ Awolumate’s allegation, saying that he attacked their boss during the distribution of palliatives in the council area.

According to the aides, “How can the commissioner attack the ward chairman in his house? That’s an afterthought. It’s not true at all.

“The ward chairman’s allegation doesn’t hold water. He’s the attacker, not the commissioner or her son. He was just out to embarrass the commissioner.

Meanwhile, the commissioner’s daughter, Dr Jumoke Bakare, confirmed that her mother was admitted to the hospital after she was beaten and injured by the ward chairman.

The Zamfara Tribunal had earlier fixed the Judgement for today Monday 18th September 2023.

Advertorial

Recall that Matawalle, who is now Minister of State for Defence, had accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of subverting his victory at the polls, for failure to include the results of some ward areas, which if added, will give him victory with a wide margin.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State said the party is confident of victory at the tribunal having provided enough evidence at the court.

APC spokesperson in Zamfara State, Yusuf Idris, in an interview with Channels Television on Sunday, said the party is hoping to reclaim “its stolen mandate.”

Idris said Matawalle was rigged out by some forces at the national level because of his involvement in the fight against the new naira notes design and his support for the then-presidential candidate of the party, Bola Tinubu.

He stated, “We are hoping to reclaim our stolen mandate tomorrow, as we all know, we were rigged out during the election by some cabals of the past Federal Government, they used some unpatriotic soldiers to rig the election.

“We provided enough evidence at the tribunal and Insha Allah we will be victorious.”

He called on the members and supporters of the party to remain calm and be law-abiding before, during and after the court judgement.

The acting Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Zamfara State, Mouktar Lugga said the party is highly confident of victory at the tribunal.

Lugga the party is confident that the tribunal will be just and fair and the voice of the people will be heard.

He appealed to the people of the state to be patient and not to over-celebrate as they anticipate victory on Monday.

“I called on our people to be patient and not over-celebrate as we anticipate victory, they should not take laws into their hands, we know PDP is peace loving party, they should not do anything that will go against the law,” he said.

Enugu Tribunal: Dispense Justice Not Judgment – Analyst Tells Judges

As Enugu electorates awaits the verdict of the Governorship/State Assembly Election Petitions tribunal, an Enugu based public affairs analyst, Simon Edeh has called on the three panels handling various election Petitions in the state to dispense Justice and not Judgment.

Speaking to journalists in Enugu on Friday, Edeh said the judges stand at a historical crossroad and their actions and inactions will have a great impact on the state.

According to him, Ndi Enugu expect that the judges will demonstrate total commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all.

“In a number of cases delivered so far, the decisions and judgments of these judges especially in panel one under Justice A.M Abubakar fly in the face of logic, fact or commonsense” he argued.

Edeh urged the judges in each of the panel to uphold their integrity and defend the dignity of the constitution in their decisions.

Advertorial

“The nine judges in the three panels of the Tribunal must know that the people are watching and justice must not only be done, but seen to have been done in the matters before them.”

“Few days ago, the media was agog with the allegation of some judges playing to the gallery of the rulling party in the state. Recall that three Labour Party House of Reps members and about two House of Assembly lawmakers were sacked on grounds that should be a pre-election matter. Reversing the Lawmakers’ victories in matters that have been settled by Superior Court, ridicules the integrity and avowed impartiality of the Nigeria Judiciary, thereby exposing the institution to attacks”.

“It is more confusing when diverse or conflicting judgments are given on the same matter by the Tribunal. In plethora of cases, Supreme Court have held that a tribunal lacks jurisdiction to intervene in the internal affairs of a political party.”

“The issue of nomination of candidates as well as membership are internal affairs of the party beyond the jurisdiction of courts. It is only a political party that can determine who it’s members are and who their flag bearer for an election should be”

“The act of using money to pervert and influence the tribunal judges by desperate and deep-pocket politicians in Enugu state has been on the news.”

“The judges in Enugu Tribunal must expunge all forms of public doubt and suspicion of trading justice in our courts.”

“While we expect the application of relevant laws to same by the judges of the Enugu Tribunal, I call on them to uphold their integrity to defend the dignity of our constitution in all their decisions. That is what we will accept. Anything other than this will amount to an installment by the judiciary” he said
