Edo Guber: Oshiomhole Vows To Secure Victory For APC Candidate

Senator Adams Oshiomhole, former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and ex-governor of Edo State, has pledged to ensure the party’s success in the upcoming September 21 governorship election.

Representing Edo North Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Oshiomhole made this commitment while inaugurating the party’s Campaign Council for the election.

Advertorial

Oshiomhole declared his readiness to take any necessary role, even as a “sweeper,” to secure Senator Monday Okpebholo’s election as governor.

“If it requires me to take the role of a sweeper, I am ready to sweep Senator Monday Okpebholo into office as governor,” he asserted.

He emphasized that every APC member and supporter is part of the campaign for genuine change under Okpebholo’s leadership.

Advertorial

“Titles do not matter,” Oshiomhole said.

“Every member is a canvasser; every member of our party must work hard to win their units, wards, local government, and state. Move from house to house because neighbor talks to neighbor and understands.”

Addressing the challenges faced by Edo residents, Oshiomhole urged all those affected by issues like flooding and inadequate school facilities to unite in support of the APC.

“There will be a change at Osadebe Avenue. APC will take over Edo democratically come September 21,” he affirmed.

Senator Matthew Urhoghide, Director General of the Campaign Council, called on party members to resolve their differences and work diligently for the party’s victory, stressing the importance of de-emphasizing the role of money in the campaign.

APC State Chairman Jarrett Tenebe reflected on the legacies of past governors like Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia, Prof. Ambrose Alli, and Comrade Oshiomhole, who provided good governance.

He criticized Governor Godwin Obaseki for failing to continue the progress made by Oshiomhole, citing recurrent flooding in Benin as a significant issue.

Tenebe expressed confidence that the campaign council, under Senator Urhoghide’s leadership, would work tirelessly to ensure an APC victory.

In a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Adegbulugbe Olumide, it was noted that the governor reviewed the cases of 18 inmates serving life sentences. As a result, 10 of these inmates had their sentences commuted to 21 years imprisonment, six to 10 years, and two to two years.

Additionally, the sentence of a female inmate serving seven years was reduced to six months.

Reps Recommend New Aircraft For Tinubu, Shettima

The House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence has recommended that the federal government acquire new aircraft for President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The committee, led by Ahmed Satomi, cited high maintenance costs and operational challenges with the current Presidential Air Fleet (PAF) as key reasons for this recommendation.

Advertorial

The report, co-signed by clerk Makwe Eric, emphasized the necessity of new aircraft due to the fragile nature of the Nigerian federation and potential risks from using aged planes.

The current fleet, which includes a 19-year-old Boeing 737 and a 23-year-old Gulfstream GV, has substantial maintenance costs, with the Boeing 737 alone accruing over $5 million in maintenance bills.

The committee believes new aircraft would be more cost-effective in the long run and essential for national security and the effective functioning of the highest offices.

The recommendation follows an investigative hearing and has been forwarded to the presidency for action.

Court Clears Binance Executives Of Tax Evasion Charges, Company Faces Sole Prosecution

On Friday, the Federal High Court in Abuja exonerated Binance Holdings Limited executives, Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla, from tax evasion charges filed by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

Advertorial

Justice Emeka Nwite discharged the two executives and removed their names from the four-count charge after FIRS counsel Moses Ideho submitted an amended charge listing Binance as the sole defendant.

Previously, in the amended charge filed on May 17, Binance was the first defendant, Gambaryan was the second defendant, and Anjarwalla was listed as at large.

During Friday’s hearing, Gambaryan appeared in court, while Binance’s newly appointed Nigerian representative, Ayodele Omotilewa, announced his presence.

Ideho confirmed receiving notice of Omotilewa’s appointment dated June 13, 2024, and subsequently filed a new four-count charge against Binance alone.

Ideho sought to have Omotilewa take a plea on behalf of Binance.

However, Binance’s counsel, Tonye Krukrubo, SAN, objected, arguing that Omotilewa had not been served with the amended charge and was in court for the first time.

Krukrubo contended that Omotilewa’s role was to receive legal documents, not to enter the dock, citing that he is a legal practitioner and was appointed for specific purposes.

C.J. Caleb, representing Gambaryan, supported Krukrubo’s argument, emphasizing that current legal provisions do not require a corporation’s representative to be in the dock during criminal trials.

He referenced sections of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) that outline the process for prosecuting corporations, which do not mandate that representatives must enter the dock.

In response, Ideho insisted that Omotilewa should be in the dock, citing Section 481 of ACJA.

However, Krukrubo and Caleb countered that the cited section did not specify this requirement.

Following the arguments, Justice Nwite directed Ideho to move forward with the amended charge filed on June 13, which the defendants’ lawyers did not oppose.

Justice Nwite granted the substitution of the amended charge and discharged Gambaryan from the proceedings.

The judge also vacated the previous order that had required Gambaryan to be served on behalf of Binance.

The court instructed the parties to submit written arguments regarding whether the company’s representative must be in the dock.

The case was adjourned until July 12 for the plea.

The amended charge, filed on June 14, 2024, with the Federal Republic of Nigeria as the complainant and Binance Holdings Limited as the sole defendant, alleges that Binance failed to register with the FIRS for tax purposes while offering services on its platform.

This violation is punishable under the Value Added Tax (VAT) Act of 1993 (as Amended).

Edo Guber: Shaibu, Ogbeide-Ihama Merge Forces With APC

As the September 21 governorship election in Edo state approaches, the political landscape is witnessing significant shifts.

Two former governorship aspirants from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Philip Shaibu and Hon. Omoregbe Ogbeide-Ihama, have declared their support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo.

Advertorial

Philip Shaibu, who recently served as the Deputy Governor before his impeachment, and Hon. Omoregbe Ogbeide-Ihama, a former two-term House of Representatives member, both competed for the PDP ticket but were defeated by Asue Ighodalo.

Their move to support the APC signifies a major realignment in Edo politics.

Shaibu has contributed significantly to the APC campaign by donating over 50 Toyota Sienna buses, music trucks, and his campaign secretariat office to the Okpebholo/DENCO Campaign Organization.

Similarly, Ogbeide-Ihama has provided a fully equipped campaign office to bolster the APC’s efforts.

These contributions are strategically located in the heart of Benin City, positioning them as key hubs for the APC’s campaign activities and voter engagement.

Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah, the Director of the APC New Media Campaign Committee, confirmed these donations, emphasizing their potential to reshape the political dynamics in Edo state.

He noted that the support from such influential PDP figures could encourage more PDP members to reconsider their allegiance, thereby increasing support for the APC.

“The backing of Shaibu and Ogbeide-Ihama is likely to galvanize further support for our party, reflecting a pivotal moment in Edo politics,” Omo-Ikirodah said.

“This development underscores the growing momentum behind the APC and its commitment to progress and development in the state.”

As the PDP navigates the impact of these defections, the APC is strengthening its position and building substantial momentum ahead of the election.

The support from Shaibu and Ogbeide-Ihama marks a significant shift in the political landscape, indicating a robust campaign for Senator Okpebholo.

Court Rules In Favor Of Emir Ado Bayero, Awards N10 Million Against Kano Govt

A federal High Court sitting in Kano has ruled in favor of Emir Aminu Ado Bayero, awarding him N10 million in compensation following an order for his arrest and eviction from the palace.

The court’s decision comes after Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s directive last month to dethrone Ado Bayero and enforce a 48-hour handover of power.

Advertorial

While Ado Bayero was out of Kano at the time of the governor’s order, he returned and took residence in the mini palace in Nasarawa, prompting Governor Yusuf to command his immediate arrest. In response, the 15th Emir of Kano sought judicial intervention, challenging the governor’s actions.

Ado Bayero also sought to nullify the law that facilitated his deposition and the reinstatement of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The respondents in the lawsuit included the Attorney-General of the Federation, the Attorney General of Kano State, the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, the Commissioner of Police in Kano, the State Security Service (SSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigerian Army, the Nigerian Air Force, and the Nigerian Navy.

Presiding over the case, Justice Simon Amobeda affirmed the court’s jurisdiction to hear the matter, recognizing it as a fundamental rights enforcement application.

Justice Amobeda ruled that Ado Bayero retains the freedom and legal right to move and reside anywhere within Kano or elsewhere in Nigeria.

However, the court declined to evict Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II from the Gidan Rumfa palace. Ibrahim Isa Wangida, counsel for the Kano state government and Emir Sanusi, regarded the judgment as a partial victory, noting that the court did not invalidate the law underpinning Sanusi’s reinstatement.

He indicated plans to consult his clients on the possibility of appealing the N10 million compensation ruling.

On the other hand, Ado Bayero’s counsel, Abdulrazaq Ahmad, welcomed the judgment, asserting that the court’s recognition of his client’s fundamental rights confirmed their position.

He emphasized that the ruling restrains the state government and security agencies from infringing upon the emir’s rights.
