Emirship Tussle: Confusion As Another Court Orders Eviction Of Sanusi

In a surprising twist to the ongoing emirship tussle in Kano, a Federal High Court has ordered the eviction of the reinstated Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, from the Gidan Rumfa Palace.

Advertorial

This order, issued on Tuesday by Justice S. A. Amobeda, further directs the police to ensure that all rights and privileges due to the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Bayero, are reinstated.

Aminu Bayero was deposed last week following the enactment and approval of the amended Kano Emirate Council bill by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Justice Amobeda emphasized that the ex parte order was issued in the interest of justice and to maintain peace in Kano.

Advertorial

The court’s order includes an interim injunction preventing authorities from arresting, detaining, or harassing Bayero, or infringing upon his rights.

It also prohibits the respondents from denying Bayero access to his official residence and palace at Kofar Kudu and mandates the removal of any unauthorized occupants from the palace pending the determination of the originating summons.

The case is adjourned for hearing on June 4, 2024.

This federal court decision follows a state high court order by Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, which had earlier restrained authorities from evicting Emir Sanusi II, highlighting the legal complexities and confusion surrounding the emirship conflict in Kano.

The rapid succession of conflicting court orders underscores the intensifying legal battle over the leadership of the Kano Emirate, leaving the situation in a state of uncertainty.

‘One Year Of Hopelessness’ – Labour Party Slams Tinubu

The Labour Party (LP) caucus in the House of Representatives has strongly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s first year in office, labeling it a period of “economic hardship, insecurity, and hopelessness,” in stark contrast to his administration’s promised “Renewed Hope.”

Advertorial

In a State-of-the-Nation statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, caucus leader Hon. Afam Victor Ogene marked the administration’s first anniversary by expressing deep concerns over the nation’s deteriorating economic conditions.

The LP representatives highlighted the continuous economic decline since Tinubu’s inauguration, casting doubt on the All Progressives Congress (APC) government’s ability to address the country’s challenges, especially following what they termed “the precarious eight years of the past administration.”

Advertorial

Reflecting on the aftermath of the controversial presidential election and subsequent legal battles, the LP caucus had initially hoped for positive changes.

However, they now assert that the country has further deteriorated under Tinubu’s leadership, failing to deliver on his predecessor’s so-called legacies.

The caucus pointed to alarming economic indicators, including a National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) report showing food inflation at 40.01% in March 2024, a significant rise from 24.45% the previous year.

Advertorial

The increase in prices of essential food items has exacerbated daily hunger and reduced purchasing power among ordinary Nigerians.

Additionally, the lawmakers cited a general inflation rate of 33.20%, a poverty rate of 38.9%, and a sharp rise in fuel and gas prices.

Public debt has grown from N87.38 trillion to N97.34 trillion, and interest rates for bank loans have surged, affecting manufacturers and small businesses.

The LP representatives emphasized that these dire economic conditions reflect the government’s failure to deliver on its eight-point “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which promised food security, poverty alleviation, economic growth, job creation, access to capital, social inclusion, rule of law, and anti-corruption efforts.

They argued that the current administration has not fulfilled these promises, leaving many Nigerians in despair.

The caucus also urged the government to enhance its anti-corruption efforts and ensure transparent governance, warning against relying on foreign financial institutions whose policies they believe are detrimental to developing countries.

Kano: Court Bars Police, DSS, Military From Evicting Emir Sanusi

Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu of the Kano State High Court, has issued a restraining order against the police, State Security Service (SSS), and Nigerian military, prohibiting them from evicting the reinstated Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

Advertorial

Emir Sanusi, alongside four kingmakers of Kano—Madakin Kano Yusuf Nabahani, Makaman Kano Ibrahim Sarki Abdullahi, Sarkin Bai Mansur Adnan, and Sarkin Dawaki Maituta Bello Tuta—filed the suit.

In her ruling, Justice Aliyu not only prohibited security agencies from evicting or harassing the emir and his kingmakers but also barred them from interfering with the emir’s personal or official residence, known as Gidan Rumfa.

Additionally, the court ordered the preservation of the emir’s regalia and symbols of authority.

The interim injunction further restrains the respondents from obstructing the emir’s duties pending the resolution of the motion on notice, scheduled for hearing on June 13, 2024.

This legal development follows Justice Aliyu’s previous order for the eviction of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, from the Nassarawa mini palace, as reported by Daily Trust.

It’s Official: Nigeria Returns To Old National Anthem As Senate Passes Bill

The Nigerian Senate has approved the National Anthem Bill 2024, marking a significant cultural shift by reinstating the country’s old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

This decision, which swiftly moved through both first and second readings on Thursday, now awaits the signature of President Bola Tinubu to become law.

Advertorial

The approved legislation mandates the replacement of the current anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” with “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” which was originally adopted at Nigeria’s independence on October 1, 1960.

The older anthem had been in use until it was replaced in 1978 under the military administration of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate residing in Nigeria at the time of independence, wrote the lyrics for “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” with Frances Berda composing the music.

Advertorial

This anthem played a pivotal role in fostering national identity and unity during the 1960s and 1970s.

Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele highlighted the anthem’s historical significance, stating, “When sung, it evoked a profound sense of patriotism among Nigerians.”

“Those who experienced that period recall its vital contribution to our national history, bringing back nostalgic and cherished memories of our formative years as a nation.”

The bill aims to revive the anthem’s inspirational legacy and reconnect modern Nigeria with its historical roots.

Edo 2024: New LP Leadership Calls For Unity, Vows To Secure Victory

The new leadership of the Labour Party (LP) in Edo State has vowed to secure victory in the upcoming September 21 governorship election and called for unity among its members.

The party’s Caretaker Committee Chair, Rt. Hon. (Mrs) Elizabeth Ativie, made these remarks during a press conference in Benin City on Tuesday, highlighting the challenges faced and pledging support for the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Akpata.

Advertorial

Ativie addressed concerns about attempts to oust the National Chairman, Julius Abure, dismissing them as actions of sponsored external forces aiming to destabilize the party.

She emphasized that only a National Convention has the authority to remove the National Chairman, per the party’s constitution.

“The National Chairman has achieved significant successes during his tenure,” Ativie stated.

“Criticism should be based on his accomplishments and failures, and his successes far outweigh his failures. We are aware that certain external parties, uncomfortable with the growing support for the Labour Party, are fueling these internal conflicts.”

Advertorial

She further condemned the recent invasion of the Labour Party Secretariat in Abuja, attributing it to individuals hired to undermine the party.

“The protesters were not genuine party members but were rented from a nearby market in Abuja,” she claimed.

Ativie also dismissed allegations of pursuing an “Esan agenda,” clarifying her roots and intentions.

“As someone from Uhunmwonde, the notion that I am pushing an Esan agenda is baseless. My focus is on uniting the party and securing electoral victory.”

She praised National Chairman Abure for revitalizing the party and achieving significant milestones, including the election of a governor and several National and State Assembly members.

“Under his leadership, the Labour Party has reached new heights. Those attempting to create divisions within the party should reconsider and work towards its progress.”

Regarding the claim by Kelly Ogbaloi about his continued tenure as state chairman, Ativie stated that his term had expired.

“The previous executive exceeded their six-year term limit, staying for about 12 years. Their inability to unify the party post-primary necessitated the formation of this caretaker committee.”

Ativie announced efforts to reconcile and reunite aggrieved members within a month.

She also assured collaboration with the existing campaign council, indicating possible adjustments to ensure effectiveness.

“We aim to build on the current campaign structure. If we identify any gaps in capacity, we will make necessary changes to strengthen our efforts. The Labour Party is committed to winning this election, and with the support of the masses, we will achieve this by quickly organizing our ranks.”

Biafra/Nigeria Civil War: IPOB Declares May 30 ‘Sit-at-Home’ To Honor Fallen Heroes

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has reaffirmed the significance of May 30th as a day of remembrance for the Igbo people and residents of the South-East to honor those who perished during the Nigerian Civil War from July 6, 1967, to January 15, 1970.

In a statement released on Tuesday by IPOB’s media and publicity secretary, Emma Powerful, the organization declared the May 30, 2024, sit-at-home directive as mandatory.

“We remind everyone residing in Biafra territory that the May 30th sit-at-home in commemoration of Biafra Heroes Day is inviolable, and we expect everyone to comply with this one-day directive.”

The statement emphasized IPOB’s vital role in Biafra-related matters, stating, “Remembering those who fought for Biafra’s freedom and sovereignty is crucial.”

“No government or security agency should harass anyone during this event. We urge state governors in Biafra Land to ensure safety on this day.”

IPOB stressed that the Nigerian government cannot prevent the commemoration of Biafran heroes.

“Those who defended our land against the extermination agenda during the 1967-1970 war deserve to be honored. We will continue to celebrate our heroes and heroines.”

The organization further announced a complete ban on activities in the South-East on May 30, 2024, and called on regional governors to ensure the security of lives and property.

“On this year’s Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day, all social activities in Biafra Land are banned. Markets, schools, banks, government, and private businesses must remain closed.”

The statement also mandated a lockdown of all transport services, including air, sea, and land, from 6 am to 6 pm on May 30, 2024.

Exceptions include essential services like healthcare, emergency services, and journalism.

IPOB acknowledged potential threats from criminal elements and urged people to stay home to avoid attacks falsely attributed to IPOB and its Eastern Security Network (ESN).

“We do not want anyone to die or lose property. Prepare in advance for May 30th.”

The organization warned that those exploiting the event to cause harm would face consequences.

“We will remember all Biafran heroes and heroines, including international supporters like Bruce Mayrock from the USA, and notable figures such as General Phillip Efiong and Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.”

IPOB also encouraged Biafrans abroad to obtain permits for rallies and to share the history of the Biafran struggle.

“Biafra is coming. Our determination for Biafra liberation remains unwavering.”

Advertorial

When approached for a comment, the Director-General of the NGF, Dr. Abdulateef Shittu, acknowledged awareness of the lawsuit but refrained from making any statements, citing the matter’s pending status in the court.

“The NGF Secretariat is aware that the Federal Government has instituted a legal action against the Governors of the 36 States of the Federation at the apex court over alleged misconduct in the administration of Local Government Areas. Since the matter is in Court, it will be subjudice to comment on it,” Dr. Shittu said.

2027: Ex-Reps Member Dismisses Potential Atiku-Obi Alliance

Former House of Representatives member, Tajudeen Yusuf has dismissed the likelihood of an alliance between Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar.

Advertorial

Speculation about a potential alliance arose after a recent meeting between Obi, the Labour Party’s (LP) 2023 presidential candidate, and Atiku, his counterpart from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Obi previously served as Atiku’s running mate in the 2019 presidential election under the PDP before switching to the LP for the 2023 race.

Despite their past collaboration, Yusuf doubts they will join forces for the 2027 election.

“They have worked together before in 2019. It would not be out of place if they work together again. I am not in their minds, but I don’t see the possibility,” Yusuf said during an appearance on Channels Television’s *Politics Today*.

Yusuf highlighted Atiku’s determination to continue his political career as a key obstacle to an alliance. “After their meeting, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar stated he would continue to contest as long as he’s alive and healthy,” Yusuf noted, interpreting this as a signal that Atiku is not considering stepping aside for Obi.

He believes both men will likely run independently in 2027, making an alliance challenging. Additionally, Yunusa Tanko, a spokesman for the Obi-Datti campaign council in the 2023 election, emphasized that Obi is only interested in a merger aimed at improving the country.

“His Excellency, Peter Gregory is not interested in a merger solely for power. He is focused on a merger that will elevate Nigerians out of poverty, enhance healthcare, provide potable drinking water, and solve the power supply issue,” Tanko said. “He is driven by ideology and a solid program, not just the pursuit of power.”
