Biden, Trump Agree To Election Debates

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have agreed to participate in presidential debates scheduled for June and September, following Biden’s challenge to his rival and Trump’s readiness to engage.

CNN announced it will host the first debate on June 27 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Subsequently, both candidates agreed to a second debate on September 10, to be hosted by ABC.

This agreement ends months of speculation over whether the debates would occur, as both the Democratic incumbent and the Republican challenger opted to bypass the traditional commission that has organized presidential debates since 1988.

Biden, 81, set specific conditions for the debates, including the absence of a studio audience to avoid the chaos experienced in the 2020 debates with Trump.

In contrast, Trump, 77, favored larger venues for added excitement and proposed additional debates in July and August.

“Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020. Now he’s acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal,” Biden stated in a video posted on X.

He also mocked Trump over his ongoing legal issues, suggesting Wednesdays would be ideal for debates given Trump’s trial schedule.

Biden confirmed his participation in the ABC debate, adding humorously, “Trump says he’ll arrange his own transportation. I’ll bring my plane, too. I plan on keeping it for another four years.”

Trump later announced his acceptance of a third debate on October 2, hosted by Fox News, but there was no immediate response from Biden regarding this additional debate.

CNN confirmed there would be no audience for its debate, aiming to maximize the candidates’ speaking time.

Biden’s decision to engage in these debates seems to be a strategic move to challenge Trump’s lead in key battleground states ahead of the November election.

The Biden campaign hopes to counteract what they perceive as a growing “nostalgia” for Trump, despite the Republican’s plans to significantly expand presidential powers if re-elected and pursue “retribution.”

The debates promise to be a significant event in the lead-up to the election, offering voters a direct comparison between the two candidates’ visions for the future of the United States.

EFCC Slams Public Procurement Act For Enabling Contract Corruption

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has highlighted the urgent need to revise the laws establishing the Bureau of Public Procurements (BPP) to curb corruption associated with contract awards.

EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede made this statement at the EFCC headquarters in Jabi, Abuja, during a meeting with the BPP management team led by Director General Mamman Ahmadu.

Advertorial

Olukoyede pointed out that the current legal framework has not effectively supported the prosecution or conviction of corrupt individuals involved in public procurement.

He emphasized that significant changes are required to prevent corruption before contracts are awarded and funds misappropriated.

“Over the years, the BPP has defined scopes that guide our contract and procurement processes, but there is still much more to be done,”

“The law has not been fully operationalized and has not aided prosecution significantly. I cannot recall any case where we secured a conviction using the BPP Act. To truly sanitize our contract and procurement processes, we must review the BPP Act.”

Advertorial

He further criticized the BPP’s issuance of “Certificates of No Objection,” expressing concerns about the procedure’s susceptibility to corruption.

Olukoyede noted that the majority of corruption cases in the public sector are related to contracts and procurement.

“The issue of ‘Certificate of No Objection’ is concerning. We urge the BPP to review its processes and procedures for issuing these certificates,” he said.

“Having worked in regulatory compliance and enforcement, I have observed that corruption is most prevalent in contract and procurement activities.
The problem lies not with Nigerians but with the weak systems that people exploit. Strengthening our institutions is crucial.”

Olukoyede called for collaborative efforts between the EFCC and BPP to enhance the integrity of the procurement process, stressing the importance of preventative measures to stop corruption before it begins.

Embracing Western Democracy In Africa Was A Grave Mistake – Obasanjo

Picture of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo,

Former Nigeria’s President, Olusegun Obasanjo has said that adopting and implementing Western liberal democracy in Africa was a significant misstep.

Speaking in Abuja on Tuesday during a meeting with members of the House of Representatives about reintroducing the parliamentary system of government, Obasanjo emphasized the need for African nations to develop a democratic model that better aligns with their unique cultural values and needs.

Advertorial

Obasanjo argued that Western liberal democracy is fundamentally incompatible with Africa’s core value systems, as it is rooted in European cultural norms.

He highlighted that before colonialism, African nations successfully managed kingdoms and empires with their own governance structures, which were resilient against external and internal opposition, unlike the European monarchical systems.

Advertorial

He stressed that the imposition of Western democratic models has not served African countries well and called for the creation of an “Afro-Democracy.”

Obasanjo believes this new system would be more in tune with the continent’s traditions and values, offering a more suitable framework for governance in Africa.
