Tragedy struck in Ezinifite village, Okpuno, Awka, on the evening of Saturday, July 27, 2025, when unidentified gunmen abducted and killed Mr. Ifesinachi Onyekere, the Managing Director of Fish Magnet Outlet.
In a statement released Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that Onyekere was targeted at his home by attackers who had reportedly trailed him before launching their assault.
“Preliminary findings suggest the assailants followed the victim and shot him in the leg before abducting him,” Ikenga said.
Sadly, his lifeless body was later discovered, sparking grief and outrage in the local community.
Reacting to the incident, Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, condemned the killing as a “heinous and cowardly act.”
He has ordered all tactical and intelligence units in the command to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible.
“The police owe it to the family, the people of Anambra, and the memory of the deceased to ensure that those responsible face the full weight of the law,” Ikenga quoted the CP as saying.
In a follow-up operation, a joint team of Police and the Anambra Vigilante Group recovered Onyekere’s navy blue Toyota Corolla along the Ukwulu–Igbariam road. Authorities believe the suspects used the vehicle to escape after the abduction.
