The people of Uburu community in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have expressed strong support for the ongoing expansion of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHSU), describing the project as a collective decision aimed at boosting education and economic development in the area.
In a communiqué jointly signed by community leaders; HRH Eze (Dr.) Lazarus Umahi Nweze, Chief Shedrack Onu, and Chief Odi Nicholas Enyi, the Uburu Traditional Rulers Council reaffirmed that the university’s expansion was a unanimous resolution of the host community, not an individual initiative.
The council also exonerated the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, from allegations of land grabbing, describing a recent petition against him as false, malicious, and politically motivated.
“The expansion of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences is a collective initiative of Ndi Uburu, conceived and endorsed by the Uburu Traditional Council,” the communiqué stated.
“We therefore declare that Senator Umahi is completely exonerated from all accusations relating to the land process.”
The leaders denounced what they called the misuse of the community’s name by a few individuals allegedly acting in bad faith to “tarnish the image of Senator Umahi and create unnecessary divisions.”
Similarly, the DUFUHSU Land Expansion Committee, chaired by Dr. Umezurike Daniel with Mr. Odi Nicholas Enyi as secretary, issued a statement explaining that the expansion followed a transparent and well-documented process.
According to the committee, the university’s governing council had requested additional land after discovering that its current site, measuring less than 20 hectares, could no longer accommodate its growing academic and infrastructural needs.
“Our committee conducted public sensitisation, identified affected landowners, obtained written consents, and ensured full compensation for all 29 verified landowners,” the statement noted.
“At no time did Senator Umahi or any government representative engage in coercion, land grabbing, or intimidation. The process was entirely transparent and community-led.”
The leaders reaffirmed their unwavering support for the project, which they said will enhance access to education, generate employment, and bring pride to the people of Uburu and Ebonyi State at large.
“We stand united behind the university’s expansion,” the communiqué concluded. “It represents progress, development, and opportunity for our children and future generations.”
