The Anambra State Government has launched an ambitious housing programme aimed at easing accommodation challenges for civil servants and low-income earners, with a plan to construct 10,000 affordable housing units at Isiagu in Awka South Local Government Area.

The initiative, to be delivered through a Public–Private Partnership with selected real estate developers, is expected to commence this dry season.

Officials say the project was delayed earlier due to last-minute disagreements between the government and its private partners, but all issues have now been fully resolved.

In a statement released on Saturday, the state Commissioner for Housing, Paully Onyeka, disclosed that Governor Chukwuma Soludo had approved the scheme months ago but bureaucratic hurdles slowed its takeoff.

Onyeka made the clarification while defending his ministry’s 2026 budget before the House of Assembly Committee on Appropriation.

He described the project as “a well-structured plan designed to expand access to decent and affordable accommodation for workers and low-income earners across the state.”

According to him, “The 10,000 low-cost housing units will soon be a reality. It will improve the housing deficits of civil servants and low-income earners in the state.”

“The state governor had given approval for the project a long time ago, but it was truncated by a last-minute hindrance, which has been resolved by the state government.”

He added that with the arrival of the dry season, construction is set to commence immediately.

“At the point of dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s, a few issues arose with the private-sector partners handling the PPP arrangement. Those issues have now been sorted out. Now that the dry season is here, we will take off, and that will be history.”

Onyeka also highlighted the governor’s broader development strategy, noting that extensive road construction has opened up new areas within the state, making estate development more viable than in previous years.

He further explained that although the Ministry of Housing is mainly service-oriented, it plays a critical technical role in several state-led infrastructure projects, including the recent upgrade of Ekwueme Square, improvements at the Commissioners’ Quarters, and the construction of a new Trauma Centre at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku.

“Our obligations transcend the few things you see under the Ministry of Housing; even when building projects are domiciled under other MDAs, we execute them,” he said, stressing the importance of accountability in budget requests.
