Police in Anambra State have arrested a masquerade captured in a viral video assaulting residents of Awgbu community in Orumba North Local Government Area.

The incident, which reportedly occurred during the festive period, showed the masquerade attacking unsuspecting villagers without provocation, sparking outrage on social media.

Confirming the arrest, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the actions of the masquerade were unlawful, unacceptable, and contrary to Igbo cultural values.

Ikenga stated that the Anambra State Police Command had taken the suspect into custody following the breach of public peace caused by the violent conduct.

According to him, the behaviour displayed in the widely circulated video does not represent Igbo tradition and will not be tolerated under any circumstance.

“The Command wishes to inform the public that the masquerade involved in the unprovoked and violent attacks on innocent citizens in Awgbu has been arrested. Such conduct is totally unacceptable and unlawful,” the statement said.

He added that investigations are ongoing and assured that all individuals connected to the incident would be identified and prosecuted.

“The suspect remains in police custody, and we are committed to ensuring that everyone involved faces the full weight of the law,” Ikenga said.
