The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a special intervention patrol operation in Enugu State aimed at reducing road traffic crashes and improving safety on major highways across the state.
The operation, code-named “Kwushi Ihe Mberede Okporouzo na Enugu” (Stop Road Traffic Crashes in Enugu), is designed to tackle the major causes of road accidents through intensified enforcement, public enlightenment and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Speaking during the launch in Enugu on Tuesday, the FRSC Sector Commander in Enugu State, Corps Commander Franklin Agbakoba, who was represented by the Deputy Corps Commander in charge of Operations, DCC Kyrian Okolo, said the initiative was developed to address the unique road safety challenges within the state and the FRSC Enugu Zonal Command.
He explained that the operation reflects the Corps’ commitment to adopting intelligence-driven strategies to combat persistent traffic offences responsible for crashes and fatalities on the state’s roads.
According to him, the intervention will combine strict enforcement, enhanced operational visibility, public awareness campaigns, stakeholder engagement and collaboration with other security agencies to ensure safer road corridors.
Agbakoba stated that the operation would specifically target offences such as vehicle overloading, mixed loading of passengers and goods, driving without a valid driver’s licence, failure to install speed-limiting devices, route violations, dangerous driving, use of mobile phones while driving, driving with defaced number plates, and violations relating to vehicle windscreens and wipers.
He noted that the initiative represents a departure from conventional enforcement, focusing instead on targeted and intelligence-led operations capable of producing measurable results.
According to him, the ultimate goal is to significantly reduce road traffic crashes, prevent avoidable deaths and injuries, and ensure that roads across Enugu State are safer for motorists, passengers and other road users.
“The operation has been carefully designed to confront dangerous driving behaviours that continue to claim innocent lives. Through sustained enforcement, public education, rescue preparedness and stronger partnerships, we are determined to reverse the trend of road traffic crashes in Enugu State,” he said.
