Enugu Community Demands Action Against Police Harassment

Residents of Obeagu in Awgu local government area of Enugu state have raised their voices against what they perceive as relentless harassment and unjust treatment by the local police force.

Led by community leaders, they’ve petitioned Governor Peter Mbah and the Inspector General of Police, highlighting the persistent persecution and unlawful arrests orchestrated by the DPO of Awgu Division Police, Benjamin Egu, and Inspector Obieze Augustin.

The protesters, armed with placards bearing messages such as “Stop Police Brutality” and “DPO Awgu, End the Harassment,” gathered to express their grievances, demanding intervention from higher authorities.

They accused the police of taking sides in a land dispute and resorting to intimidation tactics against innocent citizens.

Ogbuefi Callistus Ojogbu, the President General of the community, condemned the actions of the police, emphasizing their duty to protect citizens rather than terrorize them. He called for a thorough investigation into the conduct of the officers involved and urged the government to ensure justice prevails.

The community leaders stressed their commitment to peaceful advocacy but made it clear they would not tolerate injustice.

Secretary Igwe in council, Ogbuefi Nnanyelugo Dennis, reiterated their status as law-abiding citizens deserving of fair treatment.

The plight of women in the community was also highlighted, with Mrs. Janet Aniokete recounting incidents of harassment during police raids, including the alleged sexual harassment of a widow.

The fear instilled by these raids has led to a disruption of daily life, with residents afraid to go about their normal activities for fear of arbitrary arrest.

Chinedu Chukwuemeka echoed the community’s plea for urgent intervention, pointing out the detrimental impact on livelihoods as residents now resort to sleeping in the bush and avoiding farming and other economic activities.

In addition to seeking justice for past injustices, the protesters demanded the immediate release of three individuals detained by the DPO.

UK Tightens Rules On Dependents For International Students, Except PhD Candidates

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, disclosed that the United Kingdom has implemented stricter regulations regarding dependents accompanying international students, with the exception of those pursuing Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) studies.

Advertorial

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, Dr. Montgomery explained that the policy shift earlier this year was aimed at addressing the significant increase in foreign students bringing dependents, which was straining the resources of universities.

He clarified that while the new restrictions apply to undergraduate and short-term master’s degree students, individuals undertaking long-term research degrees such as PhDs remain unaffected and can still bring their dependents.

Dr. Montgomery highlighted the rationale behind the policy change, citing concerns raised by university Chancellors about the escalating student populations and the resultant challenges in accommodation, access to medical services, and schooling for dependents.

He provided statistics indicating a substantial rise in the number of dependents accompanying foreign students, with Nigeria alone witnessing a thirty-fold increase in such cases between 2019 and 2022.

Despite the surge in demand for UK education, Dr. Montgomery underscored the importance of considering additional factors such as the affordability of education, particularly in light of currency fluctuations.

While acknowledging the robust demand for UK education, he expressed hope that the policy adjustments would help manage the influx of dependents and ensure the sustainability of resources within the higher education sector.

Israel Shuts Down Al Jazeera Office In Gaza, Confiscates Equipment

Israel ordered the local offices of Qatar’s Al Jazeera satellite news network to close Sunday, escalating a long-running feud between the broadcaster and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s hard-line government as Doha-mediated cease-fire negotiations with Hamas hang in the balance.

Advertorial

The extraordinary order, which includes confiscating broadcast equipment, preventing the broadcast of the channel’s reports and blocking its websites, is believed to be the first time Israel has ever shuttered a foreign news outlet.

Al Jazeera went off Israel’s main cable provider in the hours after the order.

However, its website and multiple online streaming links still operated Sunday.

The network has reported the Israeli-Hamas war nonstop since the militants’ initial cross-border attack October 7 and has maintained 24-hour coverage in the Gaza Strip amid Israel’s grinding ground offensive that has killed and wounded members of its own staff.

While including on-the-ground reporting of the war’s casualties, its Arabic arm often publishes verbatim video statements from Hamas and other militant groups in the region.

“Al Jazeera reporters harmed Israel’s security and incited against soldiers,” Netanyahu said in a statement. “It’s time to remove the Hamas mouthpiece from our country.”

Al Jazeera issued a statement vowing it will “pursue all available legal channels through international legal institutions in its quest to protect both its rights and journalists, as well as the public’s right to information.”

“Israel’s ongoing suppression of the free press, seen as an effort to conceal its actions in the Gaza Strip, stands in contravention of international and humanitarian law,” the network said. “Israel’s direct targeting and killing of journalists, arrests, intimidation and threats will not deter Al Jazeera.”

He urged the Nigerian Police Force to promptly clarify the circumstances surrounding Daniel Ojukwu’s arrest, emphasizing the imperative of transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law.

Mamedu underscored the unequivocal rejection of any attempt to muzzle journalists or curtail freedom of expression, affirming that such actions are intolerable and will face staunch opposition.

He called on the Inspector General of Police to ensure the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Ojukwu, emphasizing the imperative of upholding press freedom and human rights enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution.

Highlighting the global scrutiny on Nigeria’s commitment to democracy, Mamedu emphasized the critical role of law enforcement in safeguarding journalists and press freedom, stressing that any assault on journalists undermines democracy itself.

In solidarity with Daniel Ojukwu and all journalists confronting threats and harassment, AAN reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to defending journalistic rights and preserving media integrity.

Meanwhile, concerns have risen regarding the whereabouts of President Bola Tinubu, who has not returned to Nigeria since attending the World Economic Forum’s (WEF’s) Special Meeting on Global Collaboration, Growth, and Energy for Development in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Tinubu’s absence, now lasting six days, has sparked speculation, with some suggesting he may have proceeded to Paris, France, for medical reasons.

Another official assured the public that there is no cause for alarm, affirming that the president will return to the country over the weekend.

Tinubu’s recent official visit to the Kingdom of the Netherlands was characterized by engagements with Prime Minister Mark Rutte, as well as meetings with His Royal Majesty, King Willem-Alexander, and Queen Maxima. He lamented that an organization tasked with safeguarding lives and property had deviated from its core mandate, becoming perpetrators of violence against the very people they are meant to protect.

Odo stressed that the original purpose behind the establishment of the outfit had been undermined.

Outlining potential solutions, the lawyer highlighted various shortcomings within the organization and urged the government to take decisive action.

He emphasized that a significant portion of Neighbourhood Watch officers lacked proper training, with many resorting to substance abuse, which heightened the risk of indiscriminate use of force.

He noted that insufficient funding led to officers overstepping their jurisdictional boundaries and engaging in activities beyond their competence, such as mediating in civil disputes.

Odo underscored the importance of scrutinizing the recruitment process to prevent the enlistment of individuals with criminal backgrounds or substance abuse issues.

He called for an immediate overhaul of the outfit to enhance its operational effectiveness and appealed to the government to establish a Security Advisory Committee tasked with providing guidance, training, and retraining for the Neighbourhood Watch personnel.

Address the escalating insecurity attributed to Fulani herders, Odo pointed out the devastating impact on local communities.

He condemned the relentless violence and destruction perpetrated by these herders, which instilled fear among farmers and disrupted agricultural activities, leading to food shortages.

Expressing frustration with the government’s response, Odo criticized what he perceived as a lack of decisive action against the perpetrators.

He raised concerns regarding alleged political alliances compromising efforts to address the crisis effectively.

EFCC Disputes Viral List Implicating 58 Former Governors In Corruption Investigations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has vehemently denied the authenticity of a widely circulated list implicating 58 former governors in corruption investigations.

Contrary to media reports suggesting that these former governors were under scrutiny for alleged misappropriation totaling N2.187 trillion over a span of 25 years, the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, dismissed the claims as false and misleading.

Advertorial

In a statement released on Sunday, Oyewale asserted that the purported list was a fabricated concoction, devoid of any truth or factual basis.

He emphasized that the EFCC had neither published nor engaged in discussions regarding investigations into former governors with any media outlet.

The EFCC urged the public to disregard the spurious allegations, cautioning against the dissemination of inaccurate information.

Media practitioners were encouraged to verify details pertaining to ongoing investigations directly with the Commission to prevent the propagation of false narratives.

While the EFCC has been actively probing several former governors on allegations of corruption and financial misconduct, including former Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, the authenticity of the circulated list remains dubious.

Bello, among others, faces charges related to money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds amounting to N80.2 billion.

Notably, the EFCC alleges that Bello withdrew $720,000 from state accounts to pay for his child’s school fees in advance just before concluding his term in office on January 27, 2024.

The funds were purportedly transferred to a Bureau de Change operator for this purpose.

Coastal Road: Peter Obi Refutes Allegations Of Incitement Against FG, Slams Politicians Engaged In Ethnic Politics

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has issued a robust response to allegations surrounding his tenure’s handling of infrastructure projects.

Advertorial

Refuting claims of neglect or mismanagement, Obi in his verified Facebook handle on Thursday, emphasized his administration’s commitment to removing obstructions on existing roads for safety and accessibility, rather than disrupting communities with new projects.

Highlighting specific instances, Obi clarified actions taken to repurpose public spaces like stadiums, ensuring they served their original purposes for community benefit.

Advertorial

He stressed the importance of strategic decision-making to prioritize existing infrastructure maintenance over potentially disruptive endeavors.

Addressing recent controversies surrounding coastal road constructions, Obi rejected allegations of incitement against the government, reaffirming his dedication to fostering unity and progress.

He distanced himself from divisive politics, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to serving all Nigerians impartially.

Obi reaffirmed his integrity-driven leadership style and called for national unity in pursuing a prosperous future.

Advertorial

He reiterated his stance on prudent resource management and vowed to continue advocating for the welfare of all citizens.

His statement reads;

“It has come to my attention, and I strongly denounce the distortion of facts surrounding my actions and statements during my tenure as governor of Anambra State, particularly concerning the ongoing demolitions for the construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal super highway.”

“I aim to address these issues directly, devoid of political rhetoric, to ensure clarity for all. Let me be unequivocal: during my governorship, I made it abundantly clear that all structures obstructing existing roads and lacking approval would be removed.”

“The circulated video clearly stated this, and I only initiated removal when construction had already commenced. Any insinuation otherwise is a blatant misrepresentation of the truth.”

“I challenge anyone to verify and show me where the demolished structures on existing roads or ongoing businesses were not encroaching on the road and built without government approval while I served as governor.”

“To provide further clarity, consider concrete examples. I decisively demolished the Onitsha North local government headquarters situated on the only existing stadium, relocated, and built a brand new structure for the local government office away from the stadium.”

“This action was necessary to restore the stadium to its original purpose as a sporting facility for the people. Subsequently, the stadium was rightfully named after the first owner of the first football club figure in Nigerian sports, Chuba Ikpeazu, as a tribute to our commitment to honoring our heroes. Similarly, the Onitsha South Stadium, the sole local playing ground for the community, was converted into a local government office. Recognizing the importance of recreational spaces, I reverted it to its original status by demolishing and relocating the local government office. I then renovated the stadium and renamed it after the longest-serving Green Eagles captain, Godwin Achebe.”

“My actions were strategic, aiming to prioritize the repair and maintenance of existing infrastructure over projects that risked disruption and destruction. This approach aimed to safeguard the livelihoods of Nigerians and ensure the efficient use of resources.”

“It is crucial to clarify the false comparisons drawn between my actions on Brewery Road and the current coastal super highway project. I never proposed creating a new road that would disrupt existing structures.”

“Instead, I focused on removing obstructions on existing roads to enhance accessibility and safety for all. The ongoing destruction and disruption of jobs and livelihoods associated with the Lagos-Calabar coastal road construction sharply contrasts with my administration’s efforts to improve infrastructure while minimizing adverse impacts on communities. Regarding allegations of incitement against the government, I firmly reject these unfounded accusations aimed at tarnishing my character.”

“My focus is on fostering constructive dialogue and inclusivity, rather than engaging in divisive politics. Claims of incitement are baseless distractions. I have always advocated for unity and advancement, refusing to partake in reactionary divisive politics.”

“I refuse to be reduced to the level of those who wallow in ethnic politics. Worse still, I have never and can never descend so low as to base my political aspirations on any sectional or ethnic interest.”

“My commitment to serving with integrity remains steadfast, and I encourage all Nigerians to unite for a prosperous future. In conclusion, I stand by my record as governor and reject any attempts to distort the narrative for political gain.”

“My commitment remains unwavering: to advocate for the rights and well-being of all Nigerians, ensuring that development initiatives prioritize the needs of the people. Most importantly, I will continue to insist that our national resources be applied with maximum frugality.” He said
