Igbo Woman Makes History As First Female Officer Cadet To Graduate From UK’s Royal Military Academy

Officer Cadet Owowoh Princess Oluchukwu has made history by becoming the first Nigerian female officer to graduate from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) in the UK.

In a statement released by Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, a Senior Communications & Public Diplomacy Officer at the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office in Abuja, it was revealed that Oluchukwu, aged 24, was among the 135 Officer Cadets who graduated during RMAS’ Sovereign’s Parade in London.

The parade commemorated the conclusion of 44 weeks of rigorous training for the Officer Cadets of Commissioning Course 232.

Oluchukwu’s graduation marks a significant milestone in the longstanding commitment of the UK to support Nigeria’s Professional Military Education training.

This commitment was reaffirmed during the UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership talks held in February 2024.

Since the 1950s, numerous Nigerian officers, including former Nigerian President Yakubu Gowan and the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major General Emmanuel Undiandeye, have graduated from RMAS, making Oluchukwu the 190th Nigerian graduate.

In 2018, Oluchukwu enrolled at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Throughout her tenure, she demonstrated exceptional leadership, rising from Cadet Lance Corporal in her second year to Cadet Sergeant in her fourth year.

In her fifth year, she achieved the prestigious role of Company Senior Under Officer Charlie (CSUO C), alongside two other female counterparts, becoming the first female to hold this position in the academy’s history.

During her fourth year, Oluchukwu excelled in the Academics Wing of the commissioning course, graduating with first-class honors in Biological Sciences.

Expressing her gratitude for the achievement, Oluchukwu stated, “It is a profound honor to be the first Nigerian female officer to commission from the esteemed Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.”

“This achievement is not mine alone but a testament to the unwavering support of my family, mentors, instructors, and countless individuals who believed in me every step of the way.”

“As I look ahead to the future, I am committed to representing Nigeria with pride and making a positive difference in the world.” she said.

Court Fixes Date To Hear Shaibu’s Suit Against Edo Assembly

A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled April 19 for the hearing of a lawsuit filed by Philip Shaibu, the impeached Deputy Governor of Edo State, against the state house of assembly and others.

The matter, presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo, was set for hearing after a legal team, including Alex Ejesieme, SAN, appeared seeking a date for the case.

Advertorial

Although the suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/405/24, was not initially listed on the cause list, the defense lawyers attended the court session.

Before adjourning the case, one of the lawyers informed Justice Ekwo that the hearing was supposed to take place on Thursday but was postponed due to a public holiday.

Justice Ekwo, however, clarified that he couldn’t proceed with a matter that wasn’t in the file and directed the lawyers to coordinate with the court registrar for the next hearing date.

The lawsuit, dated March 26 but filed on March 27, sees Shaibu suing the Inspector-General (I-G) of Police and State Security Service (SSS) as the 1st and 2nd respondents respectively. Additionally, he joined Hon. Justice S.A. Omonua (rtd.), the Chairman representing himself and members of the Panel of Seven Appointed by the 4th Defendant, the Chief Judge of Edo, and Prof. Theresa Akpoghome as the 3rd to 5th respondents.

Shaibu, represented by O.A. Gbadamosi, SAN, also listed Mr. President Aigbokhian, Mr. Oghogho Ayodele Oviasu, and the Edo State House of Assembly as the 6th to 8th respondents respectively.

In the originating motion on notice, Shaibu seeks several declarations, including that the impeachment proceedings against him violated his fundamental right to fair hearing and that the failure of the assembly to serve the impeachment notice on him personally is a violation of his rights.

He also seeks an order directing the respondents not to take further steps in violating his rights and to recuse themselves from sitting as Chairman and members of the 7-Man Investigating Panel, citing bias.

Shaibu’s argument is based on the fact that he had not been confronted with any allegations prior to the impeachment, and he hadn’t been given the opportunity to respond to the accusations.

Shaibu was impeached by the state’s house of assembly on Monday after the seven-man panel found him guilty of perjury and leaking government secrets. The panel, led by retired Justice Omonuwa, concluded its sitting on April 5, with Shaibu or his counsel failing to attend.

Mali’s Military Junta Orders Suspension Of All Political Activities

Mali’s military junta, led by Colonel Assimi Goita, has announced the suspension of all political activities across the country, citing the need to maintain public order.

The decree comes after more than 80 political parties and civil groups called for presidential elections and an end to military rule.

Advertorial

Since the consecutive coups in 2020 and 2021, Mali has been under junta rule, exacerbating the security, humanitarian, and political crises in the West African nation.

Despite previous promises of presidential elections and a transfer of power to civilians, the junta has not provided any clear indication of its intentions.

Government spokesman Colonel Abdoulaye Maiga defended the suspension of political activities, citing the “sterile discussions” during previous attempts at national dialogue and the increasing subversive acts by political parties.

Opposition voices have faced suppression under the junta’s rule.

The junta’s decision to ban a new opposition coalition in March further underscores its crackdown on dissent.

This coalition, critical of military rule, proposed a new approach to address Mali’s longstanding issues with armed groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.

Mali continues to grapple with instability and insecurity, with the junta’s actions raising concerns about the prospects for democratic governance and peace in the country.
