Appeal Court sitting in Enugu on Tuesday dismissed the suit filed by the Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the 2023 general elections in Enugu state, Chief Uche Nnaji.

Nnaji whose petition was initially dismissed by the Enugu governorship election Petitions Tribunal, had approached the appellate Court to seek redress.

Daily Gazette recall that the Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Enugu had on June 20, 2023 dismissed the petition filed by Mr. Nnaji and his party, the APC, challenging the outcome of the Enugu governorship election wherein the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announced Mr. Peter Mba of the Peoples Democratic party, PDP, winner of the polls.

Advertorial

In that Petition, Uche Nnaji said Mr. Peter Mba of the PDP was at the time of the election not constitutionally qualified to contest, having presented forged certificate to INEC.

It further said that Mr. Mbah was not duly elected by majority of lawful votes cast at the election as the process was marred by substantial non compliance with the electoral act, among other issues.

But the judge in her rulling said the petition with the suit number EPT/EN/GOV/05/23 was abandoned and cannot be entertained pursuant to paragraph 18(3) (4) of the First Schedule of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Olusanjo added that the 1.5 million figure covered students from far and neighbouring states and countries that have come to the state to enjoy the state’s free education policy.

“Having noticed the success of BESDA between 2017 to 2022 in the state, the World Bank, Federal Government and Global Partnership for Education decided to pick the state, Adamawa and Katsina for the new project, which is to deliver the needed equitable access to out-of-school children in this state,” Olusanjo said.

No Abandoned Projects In Kaduna Under El-Rufai – Official

The Chairman of the Project Verification Committee in Kaduna State, Sabi’u Sani, has said that no contractor collected money from the state government and abandon projects under the last administration of former governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Sani’s reaction in a statement titled: ‘clarification on the statement credited to me regarding ongoing projects in Kaduna State’, noted that there was no iota of truth in the report credited to him

Sani was reacting to a report that claimed he said that the state may go after some contractors who collected money and abandoned projects in the last administration.

But the chairman in the statement released to newsmen on Sunday, said the primary mandate of the committee was to determine the status of ongoing projects and those in the pipeline to ensure the speedy completion of all priority projects in the state.

He said, “The committee visited some project sites on Friday, 14th July 2023. At the end of the visits, I addressed the media on the Committee’s mandate, our findings so far, and the next steps.

“I shared with the media information on the extent of work on some of the projects and what the contractors informed us are required to speedily complete the projects.

“The primary mandate of the committee is to determine the status of ongoing projects and those in the pipeline, in order to ensure the speedy completion of all priority projects in the state.

“The statement credited to me that some contractors collected payments and abandoned their projects is incorrect and merely a product of the fertile imagination of the reporters.”

Why politicians can no longer take voters for granted – Edo guber aspirant

A governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in next year’s election in Edo State, Gideon Obakhan, has said that political leaders can no longer take for granted the power of the electorate as the days of queueing behind a favoured candidate were over.

Obakhan who said this in Benin on Sunday noted that political parties now know that they need to field their best if they intend to win an election.

He stated that the last election, which saw many notable political leaders including President Bola Tinubu losing their states to opposition parties was an eye-opener to political leaders and aspirants, noting that many voters are now aware of the power they have in deciding the fate of the country.

“The people are the ones to decide who the party will present for election. The last election has shown that the right candidates must be fielded by political parties if they hope to win elections.

“Gone are the days when political leaders would present a candidate, and instruct party faithful to queue behind them. The right candidate must be presented or parties risk losing elections,” he added.

He also urged the political parties to field candidates from Edo Central to ensure fairness, equity, and justice as the region was yet to rule the state since 1999 safe for the truncated 18 months reign of Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor who was sacked by a court.

“I hear people talking about Edo South having the capacity to win the election but I ask where is the place of fairness, equity, and justice in our politics? Edo Central should be given the opportunity to rule the state this time.

“The narrative has changed and whoever wins must have done a lot of work during the campaigns. However, Edo Central should be given a chance in the state,” he added.

Army Intercepts Truckload Of Ammunition From Mali

Troops of the 192 Battalion operating in the 81 Division have intercepted a truckload of smuggled ammunition being transported into Anambra State by a syndicate.

The syndicate was busted by troops on a stop-and-search operation on Saturday along Ajilete-Owode Road in Yewa North LGA of Ogun State.

Spokesman of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu, told journalists in Abuja on Monday that the troops uncovered the illegal ammunition in a truck with registration no: ENU 697 XY, loaded with 720 packets of Red Star Cartridges of 12 calibre.

He said there were 25 cartridges per packet, totalling 18,000 cartridges and additional 250 packets of live (black) cartridges containing 10 packets each, totalling 2,500 cartridges of the same calibre were immediately seized.

Nwachukwu also disclosed that the suspects, identified as Mr Eric Seworvor, a Ghanaian, and the driver, Mr Lukman Sani, have been taken into custody, adding that they were helping with ongoing investigations.

“Information gathered during preliminary investigation revealed that the ammunition, which were surreptitiously concealed in a supposed empty truck were imported from Mali via Idiroko International Border where the criminals had successfully beaten several other checkpoints en-route to their final destination in Onitsha, Anambra State, where they intended to deliver the illegal ammunition.

“Timely intervention by the vigilant troops, however, thwarted the chaos that such a volume of ammunition would have been unleashed on innocent members of the public, if the criminals had succeeded,” Nwachukwu said.

He appealed to Nigerians to continue to support the troops and other security agencies with credible information.
