The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has vehemently denied the authenticity of a widely circulated list implicating 58 former governors in corruption investigations.

Contrary to media reports suggesting that these former governors were under scrutiny for alleged misappropriation totaling N2.187 trillion over a span of 25 years, the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, dismissed the claims as false and misleading.

In a statement released on Sunday, Oyewale asserted that the purported list was a fabricated concoction, devoid of any truth or factual basis.

He emphasized that the EFCC had neither published nor engaged in discussions regarding investigations into former governors with any media outlet.

The EFCC urged the public to disregard the spurious allegations, cautioning against the dissemination of inaccurate information.

Media practitioners were encouraged to verify details pertaining to ongoing investigations directly with the Commission to prevent the propagation of false narratives.

While the EFCC has been actively probing several former governors on allegations of corruption and financial misconduct, including former Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, the authenticity of the circulated list remains dubious.

Bello, among others, faces charges related to money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds amounting to N80.2 billion.

Notably, the EFCC alleges that Bello withdrew $720,000 from state accounts to pay for his child’s school fees in advance just before concluding his term in office on January 27, 2024.

The funds were purportedly transferred to a Bureau de Change operator for this purpose.
