Court Grants FG’s Request To Shift Natasha’s Trial Till Next Year

A Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama has granted the Federal Government’s request to adjourn the alleged criminal defamation case against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, filed by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).

During Monday’s proceedings, the senator’s counsel, Ehiogie West Idahosa (SAN), informed the court that the prosecution was absent.

Justice Chizoba Oji then revealed that she had received a letter from the prosecution seeking an adjournment.

The letter was subsequently shown to Idahosa, who stated that he had not been served.

Idahosa argued that although the letter was filed earlier that morning, the prosecution failed to comply with the rule requiring such notices to be communicated to the defence at least 48 hours before the scheduled sitting.

He asked the court to proceed with the day’s business, which was the hearing of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s preliminary objection, since the defendant was present.

Justice Oji agreed that the adjournment request did not meet the procedural requirement but, “in the interest of justice,” granted the prosecution’s request.

She declined the defence’s plea to continue with the hearing and adjourned the case until February 23 next year.

The senator attended the proceedings alongside her husband.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan is facing a criminal defamation charge stemming from her allegation that Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello conspired to kill her.

Her preliminary objection challenges the AGF’s decision to file two similar charges, one at the FCT High Court and another at the Federal High Court, Abuja, arguing that the duplication amounts to an abuse of court process.

In a counter-affidavit, however, the prosecution maintained that the cases were not duplicative.

It asserted that the three-count charge before the FCT High Court was filed only after a thorough investigation established a prima facie case.

The prosecution further argued that the charge, brought under the Penal Code, was lawful, properly investigated, and filed in line with the AGF’s constitutional authority.

It added that the decision to file the charge was guided by public interest, the interest of justice, and the need to prevent abuse of legal processes.

Gunmen Strike Again, Abduct Over 30 In Borno, Kano

Gunmen in Nigeria kidnapped more than 30 people over the weekend across separate attacks, according to security sources, as authorities face renewed scrutiny over rising mass abductions.

A security report prepared for the United Nations and seen by AFP stated that armed groups, often referred to as “bandits,” carried out twin assaults on the villages of Unguwar Tsamiya and Dabawa in Kano State, abducting at least 25 residents.

Kidnappings are uncommon in this northern commercial hub.

In northeastern Borno State, the epicentre of a long-running jihadist insurgency, nine onion farmers were reportedly kidnapped by suspected jihadists, said militia commander Tijjani Ahmed.

Kidnapping for ransom has plagued Nigeria since the 2014 abduction of 276 schoolgirls in Chibok by Boko Haram.

Recent weeks have seen hundreds of schoolchildren kidnapped, prompting the UN to warn of a “surge in mass abductions.”

Meanwhile, the United States has criticized Nigeria over what it calls the mass killing of Christians, even threatening military intervention.

Nigerian authorities and analysts reject this framing, noting the country faces widespread ethnic and religious conflicts.

November alone saw roughly 400 people kidnapped, including over 300 schoolchildren, according to AFP.

Statistics remain difficult to verify, as many cases go unreported.

Between July 2024 and June 2025, at least 4,722 people were kidnapped in 997 incidents, with 762 fatalities, according to SBM Intelligence.

The report described Nigeria’s kidnap-for-ransom crisis as a “structured, profit-seeking industry,” estimating that kidnappers earned about 2.57 billion naira (~$1.66 million) in ransom.

Bandits, often motivated by money rather than ideology, carry out kidnappings, extortion, and looting, particularly in areas with limited state presence.

While government efforts have occasionally brokered peace deals with bandits, critics argue these agreements often allow the criminals to keep arms and use truce zones as bases for further attacks.

President Bola Tinubu said last November that the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and killings of soldiers in Borno left him “depressed.”

He called on communities to assist security forces with vital information, warning that “those who threaten the safety of our citizens will face the full weight of the Nigerian state.”

Enugu Governor Deploys Hi-Tech Drones, Patrol Fleet To Cement State Security, Says No Hiding Place For Criminals

To strengthen the security of lives and property, Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, on Monday inaugurated advanced security equipment and patrol vehicles procured by the Enugu State Security Trust Fund (ESSTF).

The items unveiled include two state-of-the-art drones, 10 Hilux 4×4 vehicles, 40 motorcycles, 400 bulletproof vests, and 400 bulletproof helmets.

Inaugurating the assets at Government House, Enugu, Governor Mbah thanked the Trustees of ESSTF for their commitment to enhancing state security, saying the equipment would complement the administration’s existing investments, such as the Command and Control Centre, AI-enabled surveillance cameras across the state, and over 150 Distress Response Squad vehicles fitted with AI cameras.

“The security challenges we are having are local, and at the state level, we must also play our own role to ensure our localities are safe. So, these items will be deployed to ensure Enugu State remains the safest state in this country.

“We can confidently say that violent crimes have been reduced by over 80 per cent in Enugu State today. But as you know, we are not resting on our laurels because the criminals and bad elements we are dealing with are not resting, but are looking for any opportunity to breach our security.

“Security is one sector you may have scored 90 per cent, but just one breach can undermine all the successes you have accomplished. That is why we must invest heavily in equipment and infrastructure that enable us to nip crime in the bud and act quickly when one has been committed. That is why today’s event is reinforcing,” Mbah stated.

Earlier, the Chairman of ESSTF, Ike Chioke, represented by trustee Nath Udeh, said the inauguration sent a clear message to criminals: there is no longer any hiding place for them.

He noted that the equipment would bolster the governor’s efforts to position Enugu as the safest state to live and invest in.

He added, “Despite the number of flights now coming into Enugu, if you do not book on time, you do not get a seat.”

“That tells you the amount of traffic now coming into Enugu. Some companies also want to have their retreats and a couple of assignments here in Enugu. These are signs to show that there is something nice happening here.”

Explaining the technical capabilities of the drones, ESSTF Executive Secretary Engr. Chinedu Ani said, “The drones also have a coverage and a range of 100km and as far as I know, from this spot (Command and Control Centre), which is where we normally take off, the longest air distance in Enugu here is 90km.

“So, it has the capability to go beyond Enugu State. And also, we can cruise at 120km per hour. They are quite fast.

“Each drone has several cameras, including thermal camera, night vision and daytime vision. Those cameras can zoom up to so many kilometres from the position of the drone. So, it is a very powerful equipment that has a lot of technologies.”

“The cameras are also AI-equipped. So, they can do a lot of analysis. With the drones, we now have additional capability to track suspects, vehicles, and human beings anywhere within the state.”

A Trustee of ESSTF and Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onyekachi Onyia, emphasized the strategic importance of the investment, saying, “We know the consequences of leaving Enugu porous. If terrorists are able to get through Enugu, the South East is finished. It will not end well.”

Olisa Metuh Dumps PDP, Says Party Abandoned Him

Former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh, has accused his former party of abandoning him during his most difficult period, asserting that it was only President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma who offered him support.

Metuh spoke at a thanksgiving service held to mark his 60th birthday, reflecting on his political journey and legal struggles.

He recalled that he served the PDP faithfully, even enduring a 10-month prison sentence on its behalf, yet the party did not stand by him during that ordeal.

“My trial was one of the worst experiences of my life,” Metuh said.

“The day I was convicted, I celebrated. During those difficult times, it was people like President Tinubu and Governor Uzodimma who showed me love and support.”

He recounted that while he faced legal challenges, President Tinubu, then the opposition leader, reached out through the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, to offer comfort and assistance.

“This was someone I often criticised politically, yet he extended a hand when I needed it most,” he added.

Metuh also reflected on his dedication to the PDP over the years.

He recalled turning down opportunities to benefit from the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), even when offered land in Ikoyi, Lagos, during the early years of Tinubu’s political influence.

“I was very dedicated to the PDP, and I could not betray my party at that time,” he said.

Despite the perceived betrayal, Metuh expressed his readiness to support the current administration.

“I am committed to helping the government at the centre and the President to deliver the dividends of democracy. I wish the PDP well, but I have moved on,” he stated.

Metuh praised credible political actors across parties, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and David Mark, for their contributions to democracy.

He also revealed that President Tinubu had invited him to join the APC several times, but he had declined, choosing instead to remain non-partisan until now.

“I now want to use my experience and voice to contribute positively to the polity. We need space for democracy to grow, a vibrant opposition, and people expressing their views freely,” Metuh said.

The thanksgiving event drew notable attendees, including Governor Uzodimma, former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, former Governors Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), Ikedi Ohakim (Imo), Emeka Ihedioha (Imo), Senator Victor Umeh, and Tony Nwoye.

Enugu Police Arrest Man For Staging Own Kidnap, Demanding N35 Million Ransom From Family

SP Daniel Ndukwe,

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested Chibuike Joshua Ugwuja, a 26-year-old man, for allegedly faking his own kidnapping and demanding ₦35 million from his family.

According to a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect’s father reported his disappearance to the Trans-Ekulu Division on November 24, after Ugwuja, who works as a private security guard in a local estate, failed to return home from work on November 22.

The father also revealed that the suspect sent a message via Facebook to a female neighbor, claiming he had been abducted by unknown individuals on a commercial bus, and that his kidnappers were demanding a ransom.

While police intensified efforts to locate the alleged victim, Ugwuja returned home on November 29 at about 9 am.

He later confessed to staging the kidnapping. Investigations revealed that instead of going home after work, he had gone to a friend’s residence in Amorji Nike, Enugu, where he orchestrated the hoax.

The suspect admitted that his actions were motivated by frustration over his uncle’s alleged inability to provide him with a tricycle.

He demanded ₦35 million from his family, but when the ransom was not paid, he returned home.

He has since been taken into custody and will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of police investigations.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, described the incident as a “regrettable height of criminality,” while commending the suspect’s parents for promptly reporting the matter and producing their son rather than concealing the situation.

CP Giwa reassured the public that the law would take its full course and urged citizens to report suspected cases of kidnapping and cooperate with law enforcement, rather than yielding to ransom demands.

Enugu PDP Inaugurates Caretaker Committee Ahead Of 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State has inaugurated a new caretaker committee, a move seen as part of the party’s efforts to strengthen its political footing ahead of the 2027 elections.

The ceremony, held on Sunday in Enugu, brought together party members from all 17 local government areas, reigniting momentum after months of internal inactivity.

Vitus Okechi, former chairman of Igboeze South Local Government Area, was appointed Chairman of the caretaker committee, while Chukwunonye Okereke assumed the role of State Secretary.

In his remarks, Okechi called for unity and loyalty within the party, stressing the importance of rebuilding PDP’s grassroots structures.

“Enugu State is PDP, and PDP is Enugu State. We thank those who remained loyal despite challenges. Your commitment will be recognised,” he said.

He added that the party’s mobilisation strategy would be “efficient, smart, and relentless” in restoring political dominance.

State Secretary Okereke highlighted the need for integrity and inclusivity in leadership.

“We are committed to a revitalised PDP driven by honesty, member appreciation, and effective administration,” he said.

Immediate past Vice Chairman, Ozo Okey Ozoani, praised the National Working Committee for entrusting the new team with leadership, describing the appointment as an opportunity to correct past errors.

“The current political challenges stem from leadership disconnected from the PDP family. The 2027 elections offer a chance to restore our legacy,” he stated.

Other party stakeholders, including Nnamdi Onyia, called on members to remain steadfast, emphasising that loyalty and consistency are the foundation for political success.

Dignitaries at the event, such as Prof. (Mrs.) Iloh, Barr. Celine Ugwu, Barr. Chizoba Ezeagor, Chief Ken Obiora, Chief Chukwujekwu Nebo, and Chief Obiora Ugwu, expressed confidence in the committee and encouraged focus on rebuilding party structures.

“You Can Kill 10 Million People And It Still Won’t Amount To Genocide” – Bishop Kukah

Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese and Convener of the National Peace Committee, has again dismissed claims that Nigeria is witnessing a Christian genocide.

Speaking at the 46th Supreme Convention of the Knights of St. Mulumba in Kaduna, Kukah argued that the statistics often circulated about alleged mass killings of Christians are unverified and do not meet the internationally accepted definition of genocide.

He said his stance aligns with that of the Vatican Secretary of State, the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria, and all Catholic bishops across the country.

Kukah questioned the credibility of the figures being promoted in some reports.

“They claim 1,200 churches are burnt every year in Nigeria. In which Nigeria? No one has reached out to the Catholic Church to confirm such numbers,” he said.

“Those spreading these claims avoid consulting the Catholic Church because they know we do not deal in hearsay.”

He stressed that genocide is defined by intent, not by the number of deaths.

“Genocide is not about how many people are killed. You can kill 10 million people and it still won’t qualify as genocide if the intent is not to eliminate a specific group,” he said.

“So, numbers do not determine genocide, intention does.”

Kukah also pushed back against assertions that Christians are being systematically persecuted in Nigeria.

“If you say Christians in Nigeria are persecuted, how? At least 80% of educated Nigerians are Christians, and Christians control about 85% of the Nigerian economy. With such figures, is it accurate to claim persecution?” he asked.

According to the bishop, many of the concerns within Christian communities stem from internal divisions rather than an organised campaign against believers.

“The biggest problem is that Christians allow themselves to be intimidated. The day we stand together with the belief that an injury to one is an injury to all, things will change,” he said.

He also cautioned against loosely labeling victims of violence as martyrs.

“Being killed inside a church does not automatically make someone a martyr. If someone dies while stealing yam or is attacked by bandits, does that qualify as martyrdom? These are issues we must reflect on more deeply,” he said.

Responding to earlier reports suggesting he opposed designating Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” Kukah said such labels could worsen tensions and create opportunities for criminal groups to exploit divisions.

He explained that his position is based on extensive research, noting that he recently presented a 1,270-page study on genocide in Nigeria and elsewhere at the Vatican.

“My argument remains that claims of genocide or martyrdom in Nigeria are not accurate,” he said.

Ndume, David Mark, Patience Jonathan, Danjuma, Ganduje, Fayose, CBN, Others Lose Abuja Plots In Wike’s Mass Revocation

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has approved the revocation of 1,095 properties across Abuja after their owners failed to settle outstanding ground rent, land use conversion charges, and Certificate of Occupancy fees within a 14-day deadline that lapsed on Tuesday, November 25, 2025.

The decision was announced in a statement issued by the Department of Land Administration of the FCTA over the weekend.

The publication also included details such as file numbers, cadastral zones, plot numbers, districts, outstanding sums, and revocation dates.

The FCTA explained that the enforcement followed “multiple notices” published in newspapers, online platforms, and broadcast media, urging defaulters to clear their liabilities.

It said failure to comply violated Section 28 (5a & b) of the Land Use Act, as well as the conditions tied to the respective Rights of Occupancy.

A wide range of property owners were affected, including federal and state agencies, private firms, and several well-known individuals.

Those named include: General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (rtd.), Patience Jonathan, David Mark, Sule Lamido, Senator Ali Ndume, Senator Iyiola Omisore, Emir of Ilorin Ibrahim Sulu Gambari, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, Tony Anenih, and Diezani Alison-Madueke.

Finally, FG Names 15 Persons, Firms Linked To Terrorism Financing In Nigeria

The Federal Government has named 15 individuals and business entities allegedly connected to terrorism-financing networks within and outside Nigeria, following a 2024 inter-agency security assessment.

According to the report, the review uncovered nine individuals and six companies said to be involved in facilitating the transfer of funds, logistics, and other resources believed to support terrorist groups.

Those listed by the government include: Tukur Mamu, Yusuf Ghazali, Muhammad Sani, Abubakar Muhammad, Sallamudeen Hassan, Adamu Ishak, Hassana-Oyiza Isah, Abdulkareem Musa, and Umar Abdullahi.

In addition, six business organisations comprising Bureau De Change operators and trading outfits were flagged for allegedly enabling transactions linked to terrorism financing.

The firms named are: West & East Africa General Trading Company Limited, Settings Bureau De Change Ltd, G. Side General Enterprises, Desert Exchange Ventures Ltd, Eagle Square General Trading Company Limited, and Alfa Exchange BDC.

Security officials familiar with the report said the designations were the result of months of intelligence gathering, analysis of financial movements, and coordination with international partners.

They noted that the move forms part of a broader national strategy to disrupt funding channels used by extremist groups, strengthen oversight within Nigeria’s financial sector, and support ongoing military and security operations.

The government earlier stated that investigations into terrorism financing would continue, with more names likely to be reviewed as agencies intensify scrutiny of financial institutions, BDC activities, and cross-border cash movements.

DAILY GAZETTE reports that Nigeria has expanded its counter-terrorism framework in recent years to target financial backers, logistics networks, and covert channels that fuel extremist organisations across the Lake Chad Basin and the North West.

Kidnapped Traditional Ruler, Six Others Escape From Bandits’ Den

The Ojibara of Bayagan, Alhaji Kamilu Salami, and six other abducted persons have regained their freedom after escaping from the custody of bandits in Kwara State.

According to reliable community sources, the traditional ruler and the other captives managed to flee after vigilante operatives launched a coordinated and fierce attack on the kidnappers deep inside the forests.

“The vigilantes confronted the bandits around the Eku Idaji axis, close to Igbaja, and engaged them in a heavy gun battle,” one source said.

“Although the Baale and the six others have yet to physically return to the community, they have contacted residents to confirm their escape.”

The bandits had earlier demanded ₦150 million from the community as ransom for the monarch’s release.

Sources confirmed that in the early hours of Sunday, the kidnappers called the community again to reinforce their demand.

They reportedly compelled the monarch to speak during the call to convince his people that he was still alive and in captivity.

In a distressed tone, the Ojibara appealed to his community to negotiate for his release, narrating how he was transported for over five hours on a motorcycle through dense forest to the camp where they were being held.

He also disclosed that several other residents from a neighbouring community were abducted during his capture.

Bayagan, a large community in the Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, has been tense since the monarch was kidnapped by armed men who invaded his farm on Saturday wielding AK-47 rifles.

Efforts to obtain a reaction from the police on the latest development were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
