Release Nnamdi Kanu, Other Self-Determination Agitators In Detention – Group Urges FG

An Igbo group, Concerned Igbo Citizens Council (CICC), has urged the Federal Government to release all individuals detained for self-determination agitations, in line with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to a free society.

In a statement released over the weekend by the Interim National Coordinator, Comrade Ukachukwu Anaele Obioha, and the Interim National Secretary, Mazi James Uke Okorie, the group emphasized the need for the unconditional release of pro-Biafra activists and others advocating for self-determination.

While acknowledging the recent release of Sunday Igboho, a pro-Odua Republic agitator, and Omoyele Sowore, the group stressed the importance of extending the same gesture to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and all others detained for similar activities.

Obioha highlighted the disparity in treatment between Igbo and Yoruba activists, citing the continued detention of Kanu and numerous Igbo youths involved with IPOB activities. He asserted that such actions by the government create an “unsavoury ethnic and sectional colouration” to its actions.

The group further called on the Department of State Services, Police, and the National Human Rights Commission to promptly investigate and compile a comprehensive list of individuals affected by self-determination agitations, including those killed, maimed, or unlawfully incarcerated.

“We demand the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and all Igbo and Eastern Nigerian youths detained for supporting the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB),” Obioha stated.

The council pledged to mobilize Nigerians across ethnic lines to advocate for a free society and urged organizations like Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide and Igbo Governors’ Forum to support the release of Kanu and his supporters.

Confusion In Kogi Tribunal As Witnesses Disown Depositions

Drama unfolded at the Kogi State Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Abuja today, as witnesses called by the Social Democratic Party (SDP) disowned their previous depositions before the panel.

Four individuals from Adavi Local Government Area provided testimony, claiming discrepancies in the voting process during the November 11, 2023, governorship poll.

Advertorial

Despite initially affirming their witness depositions, the witnesses contradicted themselves during cross-examination by the defense counsel, distancing themselves from the content of their sworn statements.

They asserted that their depositions were not authored by them and admitted they were not polling agents but ordinary voters.

Rufai Muhammed, one of the witnesses, initially stated in his deposition that there were no validly accredited voters during the election.

However, under scrutiny, he claimed to have been validly accredited and voted, disowning his earlier statement.

Another witness, Yakubu AbdulAzeez, alleged over-voting from a fixed observation point during the election but could not stand during the tribunal hearing due to a leg problem since 2008.

Hamza Abdul Azeez, who wrote a complaint letter to the tribunal alleging over-voting, failed to provide specific vote counts for each political party in his polling unit when questioned.

The witnesses attributed their deposition statements to their lawyers but were unable to recall their lawyers’ names.

The tribunal adjourned the matter until April 2 following a request for adjournment by Jibrin Okutepa, SAN.

Legal representatives for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Governor Usman Ododo, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) were present at the sitting.

The testimonies of Hamza Abdul Azeez, Said Muhammed, Yakubu Abdul Azeez, and Rufai Muhammed from Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi shed light on the ongoing challenge by the SDP against Governor Ododo’s victory in the 2023 governorship election.

Buhari Adopted Counterproductive Approach Which Contributed To Insecurity In SouthEast – RULAAC

An advocacy organization, Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), has highlighted that the current insecurity in South-East Nigeria should not be solely attributed to secessionist groups advocating for the actualization of the Biafra Nation.

This revelation was made during the presentation of a report titled “Unveiling the Roots of Insecurity, Healing the Wounds of Human Rights Violations in Southeast Nigeria: A Path Towards Peace, Open Democratic Space, and a Prosperous Future.”

Advertorial

RULAAC accused the Nigerian government of adopting a counterproductive approach in addressing insecurity in the South-East, driven by what they perceive as then-President Muhammadu Buhari’s disdain for the region.

Comrade Okechukwu Nwanguma, the Executive Director of RULAAC, explained that the report aimed to provide insight into the true nature, roots, patterns, dimensions, and effects of the government’s approach to tackling insecurity in the region.

Nwanguma emphasized that the federal government seemed unwilling to heed the voices of reason concerning Southeast development and peace.

He criticized the government for not sincerely addressing the plight of the people or solving their problems, opting instead for a single-minded brute force approach.

He further pointed out that while pro-Biafra agitation and insurgency contribute to insecurity in the South East, attributing the problem solely to these factors paints an incomplete picture.

RULAAC’s findings depict a bleak picture of public security policies in the region, heavily reliant on repressive police and military action, often executed with excessive force.

The report documents instances where the police in the Southeast have acted in compliance with reckless directives such as the ‘’shoot-on-sight’’ order by President Buhari in 2021 and the subsequent order by the Inspector General of Police to go after IPOB members without concern for human rights violations.

The chairman of the occasion, Prof Okey Ibeanu, expressed regret over the transformation of the Southeast from a bastion of peace into a theater of war.

Dr. ChiChi Aniagolu, the Regional Director (West Africa) at Ford Foundation, which provided financial support for the report, called on Igbo leaders to urgently address the situation, emphasizing that without peace, development would be elusive.
