‘My Son’s Life Is Not Worth N5m’ – Grieving Mother Rejects Offer, Demands Justice Over Police Killing

Victoria Mba, the mother of 22-year-old Moses Mba, has rejected a ₦5 million offer from Cross River State government officials following the killing of her son by policemen allegedly attached to the residence of Governor Bassey Otu in Calabar.

Mba insists that no amount of money can substitute for justice, accusing the government of attempting to silence her family after her son was shot and beaten by police on August 1.

“They brought ₦5 million. We rejected it. Is the value of my son’s life ₦5 million? They said it was a condolence visit, but I don’t know when condolence is done with money. I want justice, not money,” she said.

Mba explained that Moses, her first child, had told her he was going to preach to the governor before the incident occurred. Instead of being turned away, she said, he was allegedly brutalised and shot.

“Is it a crime to approach a gate? They could have turned him back or held him until they contacted us. Instead, they beat him, shot him in the leg, and ended his life.”

She revealed that Moses spent eight days in the hospital before succumbing to his injuries, during which plainclothes security officers reportedly stayed in his ward.

Despite being advised to await an autopsy, Mba expressed deep distrust in the system handling the case.

“The Assistant Commissioner of Police told me to wait for an autopsy. I agreed, but I don’t trust their doctors. I just want the truth. They think they can silence me with money. I will not be silenced.”

She called for the arrest and prosecution of all officers involved in her son’s death, stressing that the real issue is about dignity and accountability, not compensation.

“My son was my pride. He called me ‘mother’ first. They’ve taken him from me and are trying to cover it up. I have lost my investment, my identity. But I want his death to mean something.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Linus Obogo, confirmed the governor had condemned the incident and ordered a police investigation.

“The governor directed the Commissioner of Police to investigate. The officer involved is being held. This is a police matter.”

Obogo denied that the ₦5 million was a bribe, insisting it was meant to assist the family with funeral expenses.

“It was a condolence visit. We could not have gone there empty-handed. The gesture was purely sympathetic.”

Spokesman for the Cross River State Police Command, Igri Ewa, said the matter is under active investigation, with the officer allegedly responsible facing internal disciplinary action.

“This is no longer being hidden. The matter is receiving attention. The outcome will be made known after due process, including advice from the DPP and an autopsy,” he said.

Human rights groups and legal experts have joined the family’s call for justice.

Debo Adeniran, President of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, condemned the killing:

“Nobody has the right to take another person’s life without judicial process. The officer responsible must face appropriate punishment as a deterrent.”

John Umeh, South-South Zonal Director of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, described the act as “reprehensible,” insisting the state must offer a state-funded burial before any compensation is discussed.

“The family has not asked for money. They only want a proper burial for Moses. His life cannot be equated with cash.”

Umeh further recommended that an independent pathologist from a teaching hospital be included in the autopsy process to ensure transparency.

Ex-Labour Party Gov’ship Candidate Dumps Party, Joins ADC

Former Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Rhodes-Vivour announced his defection during a declaration event held in Lagos on Saturday. His move comes amid efforts by opposition parties under the ADC banner to form a strong coalition capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election cycle.

Speaking at the event, Rhodes-Vivour emphasized that his decision was driven by the need for a united opposition and a shared vision to rebuild Nigeria.

“I am happy to become part of this family. I’m looking forward to the union and governance that this party will bring to Nigerians,” he said.

“My prayer is that God will grant our leaders and the party’s structure the wisdom to come together and define a new path for our beloved country.”

Rhodes-Vivour also stressed the importance of unity among opposition forces ahead of 2027:

“This is a coalition that is meant to rescue Nigeria. I have said since after the 2023 elections that we cannot afford to divide the opposition going into the next election. We must come together, united through a robust coalition that will stand a chance in 2027 to deliver this country.”

The former LP candidate revealed that attempts were made to frustrate the event, alleging that the Nigeria Police initially barred access to the original venue in Alimosho, Lagos.

In a statement issued by his aide, Olalekan Anjolaiya, organisers claimed they had properly informed the police about the event.

Despite this, security operatives reportedly prevented entry on Saturday morning, forcing the relocation of the event to another venue within the same local government area.

“I’m going to address the press later on the events that happened today and those that happened since yesterday,” Rhodes-Vivour stated.

“But with this speech, I just want to confirm that I am joining the ADC coalition.”

ADC Lagos State Chairman, George Ashiru, described Rhodes-Vivour’s entry as a major boost for the opposition coalition, calling it a historic moment in the party’s journey.

“Today we are having one of the most important affirmation programmes where our coalition partners from one of the key blocs in the Labour Party are joining this wonderful family of Nigerians, the African Democratic Congress,” Ashiru said.

“We are not affirming one man, we are affirming a movement. But every movement has a leader, and what brother Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour represents is the leadership of a movement that shook Lagos in the last election.”

Ashiru noted that the coalition was born out of sustained communication that began during the 2023 elections and has since evolved into a shared platform for political change.

Also present at the event was Professor Ola Olateju, representing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. He urged party members to believe in their collective ability to drive national transformation.

“We should not look at ourselves as if we are not able or not competent to rescue Nigeria. Anybody here could become anything,” Olateju said.

“ADC is not just a political party; it’s a movement, a movement of the people. It is an exodus. We are moving in order to rescue Nigeria.”

Kano Rep Member Accepts Expulsion From NNPP, To Announce Next Move Soon

Member of the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has accepted his expulsion from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) but accused the party of unfair treatment and failure to follow due process.

Jibrin, who represents the Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in Kano State, was expelled over alleged anti-party activities and non-payment of party dues, charges he strongly denies.

In a statement issued on Saturday evening, Jibrin expressed disappointment over the party’s decision but said he would not challenge it, citing his respect for the party and its members.

“While I would have loved to stay in the NNPP and continue my service to our people and country despite differences on some issues (which I will address elaborately in due course to avoid people being misled), the party has made and announced a decision,” he said.

“I am therefore obliged to accept the decision of the party in good faith and without grudges.”

However, Jibrin criticized the NNPP for not giving him the opportunity to defend himself before the expulsion, suggesting that the process lacked fairness.

“But for the respect I have for the party, its members, and leaders, I would have viewed this action as null and void, as it failed to follow due process or came from a factional group of the party and test it in court,” he added.

“I will rather wish the party well and go in peace. I beg the party to allow me also go in peace.”

The lawmaker, a known ally of NNPP presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, dismissed claims that he failed to pay his party dues.

“I respectfully request that the party send me the invoice, and I will promptly pay,” he said.

He also linked the party’s action to his recent public interviews, noting that:

“For the purpose of emphasis, I stand by all the statements I made in the interviews.”

Despite the fallout, Jibrin emphasized that his relationships with NNPP members remain cordial and that he holds no resentment toward those who continue with the party.

“I welcome all my supporters who wish to join me in my new journey. But for those who chose to remain in NNPP, I hold no grudges against them, and I look forward to keeping a peaceful and harmonious relationship with them both at the local, state, and national levels.”

As for his next political move, Jibrin said he would take time to reflect before announcing his next step.

“I will carefully weigh all the options before me as I decide on my next political home,” he concluded.

October 10: IPOB Warns Of ‘Pre-Arranged Judgment’ Against Nnamdi Kanu, Alerts International Community

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has raised concerns over what it described as a calculated propaganda effort aimed at influencing international opinion ahead of the anticipated court ruling involving its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement released on Friday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, IPOB alleged that a coordinated effort is underway to tarnish Kanu’s image and manipulate public sentiment in the build-up to the October 10, 2025, court decision.

According to the group, negative narratives are being intentionally circulated, while positive reports that could exonerate or vindicate Kanu are being systematically suppressed.

“Reports that vindicate our leader are deliberately suppressed,” IPOB said in the statement.

The group further claimed that this pattern is not new, pointing to previous instances where Kanu’s identity was allegedly distorted, particularly before his 2021 arrest.

“This is not the first time Nnamdi Kanu’s identity was being misrepresented,” the statement added.

IPOB warned that the ongoing media distortion, in its view, is part of a larger plan to justify what it termed a “pre-arranged judgment” against Kanu when he appears before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on October 10.

“Such deliberate distortions are paving the way for what it called a ‘pre-arranged judgment’ against its leader in October,” the group asserted.

The organisation called on the United Nations, the United States Congress, the Human Rights Council, and international media outlets to take note of what it described as a “dangerous trend,” warning that history would hold those responsible to account.

“History would hold all those responsible accountable,” Emma Powerful emphasized.

Separately, IPOB distanced itself from Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed Biafra Prime Minister recently convicted by the government of Finland.

Responding to media inquiries, IPOB said it has no links to Ekpa or his actions.

“IPOB said it is not connected to the activities of Ekpa,” the statement noted, adding that the group is “not bothered by whatever happened to the Finland-based agitator,” and that “he was alone in his travails.

APC Denies Allegations Of Forcing Members To Take Ritual Oaths

The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly denied allegations circulating on social media and certain online platforms that its leaders were compelling members to take ritual oaths.

Describing the claims as “baseless, malicious, and libellous,” the party insisted that such practices are completely foreign to its operations in the state.

In a statement released on Friday by the party’s Director of Publicity, Olufemi Nuberu, the APC said the accusations were fabricated by unidentified individuals seeking to damage the party’s reputation and instill fear among the public.

“The APC categorically denies the existence of any ritual oath-taking event involving its members or leaders,” the statement read.

“The claims are not only fabricated but also designed to incite public disaffection, spread fear, and damage the reputation of the party and its officials.”

Nuberu emphasized that the party operates strictly within the laws of the land, including the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act, and the APC Constitution.

While acknowledging that oath-taking is a recognized legal practice used to affirm loyalty and service, he clarified that it is governed by the Oaths Act, which outlines who is qualified to administer oaths and under what circumstances.

“The APC condemns any action that contravenes legal or ethical standards,” Nuberu added.

“We reaffirm our commitment to transparent, lawful, and democratic political engagement.”

The party called on the public to disregard the report and urged media outlets to refrain from spreading misinformation that could undermine political stability in the state.

Two Anambra Assembly Members Join APC Ahead Of November Gov’ship

In a major political shakeup just weeks before the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State, two members of the State House of Assembly have defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawmakers, Hon. Paul Obu, representing Orumba North, and Hon. Pat Okafor, representing Onitsha North II, announced their switch on Thursday, dealing a significant blow to the Labour Party’s presence in the state legislature.

Their defection is being hailed by APC leaders as a sign of growing momentum and shifting allegiances ahead of the high-stakes election.

“The signs are becoming clearer with each passing day. These defections are just the beginning, more are coming,” an APC spokesperson said while welcoming the lawmakers.

Insider sources suggest that as many as 10 additional lawmakers are currently in discussions to join the APC in the coming days.

If confirmed, this wave of defections could dramatically alter the political balance in the Anambra State House of Assembly and give the APC a stronger foothold heading into the polls.

Political analysts view the move as part of the APC’s strategic efforts to position itself as a viable alternative in the state, where Governor Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) is expected to defend his party’s dominance.

The Labour Party, which saw a surge in popularity during the last general election, appears to be losing ground rapidly.
