UNIZIK Staff Caught In N400,000 Admission Scam

A staff member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Nnaji Nnamdi Kenneth, is facing disciplinary action after allegedly collecting ₦400,000 from a parent in exchange for a promised admission slot.

According to a press release by the university’s Acting Head of Information and Public Relations, Louis Njelita, Kenneth, who works in the Personnel Unit (Statistics) of the Registry Department, allegedly assured a woman that her son would be admitted into the Faculty of Medicine.

However, after the proposed admission was later shifted to Nursing Science and Kenneth stopped answering her calls, the woman reported the matter directly to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi.

Upon investigation, Kenneth reportedly admitted to the allegation in the presence of key university officials, including the Chief Safety Officer, Chief Legal Officer, and the Public Relations Officer.

“Admission is free,” the Acting VC reiterated, affirming the university’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption and racketeering.

The case has been referred to the university’s disciplinary committee, with the institution emphasizing that this firm action is intended to serve as a deterrent to others involved in or considering similar misconduct.

Obi Suspends Public Activities, Embarks On Medical Rest

Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has announced a temporary break from public engagements due to health concerns.

In a statement posted on Saturday via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi revealed he became unwell while attending a tourism event in Enugu on Friday.

He subsequently visited a hospital, where doctors prescribed medication and recommended rest for one to two days.

“Earlier in Enugu, I was not feeling well. I visited the hospital where the doctor gave me some medication and advised me to take a day or two days rest,” Obi said.

“In obedience to the doctor’s advice, I will not be able to meet up with all my scheduled engagements this weekend.”

He expressed regret for any inconvenience his absence may cause and appealed for public understanding.

Despite his health condition, Obi made a stop at the Good Hope Specialist Hospital in Isulo, Orumba South LGA, Anambra State.

There, he donated ₦10 million to support the hospital’s ongoing revitalisation project, led by the Aguata Diocese of the Church of Nigeria.

He praised the diocese’s initiative to upgrade the facility into a comprehensive health complex, which will include a School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Technology.

“Healthcare remains one of the most meaningful investments we can make. Together, we can build a healthier Nigeria,” Obi added.

NNPP Expels Rep Member Over Anti-Party Conduct, Unpaid Dues

The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has officially expelled Abdulmumin Jibrin, the lawmaker representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Announcing the decision in Kano on Saturday, NNPP State Chairman Alhaji Hashim Dungurawa cited Jibrin’s anti-party activities and his failure to fulfill financial obligations as reasons for the expulsion.

According to Dungurawa, the party had tolerated a series of public criticisms and disloyalty from Jibrin, including his open association with political rivals of the NNPP’s national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

“Instead of engaging in dialogue, he chose to undermine our party’s interests and pledged allegiance elsewhere. We expelled him because he brings no added value,” Dungurawa stated.

The party also accused Jibrin of neglecting to pay mandatory party dues, vowing to initiate legal action to recover the outstanding amounts.

“It’s a constitutional requirement for members to pay dues. He has defaulted consistently, and we will pursue this matter in court,” Dungurawa added.

There has been growing speculation in recent weeks about Jibrin’s possible return to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, the NNPP insists his exit poses no threat to the party’s strength, especially within the influential Kwankwasiyya movement.

“If he was truly a political heavyweight, he would have won under the APC. He only found success through the NNPP and Kwankwasiyya,” Dungurawa argued.

Jibrin, who previously served as Director-General of the Bola Tinubu Support Groups Management Council, had defected from the APC to NNPP in 2022.

His return to the House of Reps was widely credited to his alignment with Kwankwaso’s structure.

Seven Feared Dead, Several Injured As Police Repel Bandit Attack

At least seven people are feared dead and several others injured following a violent attack by suspected bandits in Magajin Wando village, located in Dandume Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The incident occurred late Friday night, between 11:00 pm and midnight, according to a statement released Saturday by Dr. Nasir Danmusa, the State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs.

Dr. Danmusa revealed that preliminary intelligence suggests the attackers were part of a gang seeking revenge after losing members during a recent clash with the Katsina State Community Watch Corps (CWC).

That earlier confrontation had ended in favor of the CWC, prompting the retaliatory ambush.

During the latest assault, many residents attempting to transport the injured to the hospital were caught in an ambush by the same group of assailants, who had split into units.

A fierce gun battle ensued, during which the Community Watch Corps vehicle was riddled with bullets and eventually set ablaze.

Despite the ambush, the CWC operatives managed to escape and return safely.

Dr. Danmusa commended the CWC for their bravery and quick response, noting that their actions helped prevent further casualties and destruction in the community.

“The Katsina State Government deeply appreciates the sacrifice and courage of the Community Watch Corps. Their intervention undoubtedly averted a more catastrophic outcome,” he said.

He reaffirmed the government’s determination to enhance security operations across the state, vowing continued collaboration with the military, police and other security agencies to dismantle the criminal networks terrorizing rural communities.

Condolences were extended to the families of those killed, and prayers offered for the swift recovery of the injured.

The Commissioner also urged residents to stay alert and share any useful intelligence with authorities, emphasizing that community cooperation is vital to defeating the “enemies of peace.”

“With the resilience of our people and the commitment of our security forces, we will restore peace and stability across Katsina State,” the statement concluded.

Zulum Approves Free Meals, N300,000 Support For Parents To Boost School Enrollment

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has approved a comprehensive support package aimed at increasing school enrollment in Magumeri Local Government Area, a community in northern Borno that has long grappled with low participation in Western education due to insurgency-related disruptions.

During the inauguration of the Higher Islamic College in Gajiganna on Friday, Zulum announced the provision of free daily meals for students and financial incentives totaling N300,000 for the parents of 90 enrolled pupils.

“In a town of about 50,000 people, only 90 students are enrolled in secondary school. This is unacceptable,” the governor said.

“We must support these parents to ensure their children remain in school. It would mark significant progress.”

Under the scheme, each father will receive N250,000, each mother will receive N50,000 while each student will receive N50,000 in direct support.

The initiative is part of a broader push by the Zulum administration to transform the educational system in northern Borno, a region still recovering from the devastation of over a decade of Boko Haram insurgency.

“This part of Borno remains the most educationally disadvantaged. That must change. I’m directing both the Secondary and Primary Education Board Chairmen to focus more attention here,” Zulum stated.

Zulum also highlighted efforts to blend traditional Islamic education with modern learning, saying the newly inaugurated Higher Islamic College is one of 20 similar institutions established statewide.

These schools follow a curriculum approved by the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS), combining subjects such as Science, Mathematics, Technology, and foundational English with Islamic teachings.

“Our goal is clear: to provide our children, especially Sangaya learners, with the knowledge and skills required to thrive in today’s world,” Zulum said.

“Our reforms are deliberate and balanced, safeguarding cherished values of Islamic scholarship while introducing modern subjects and vocational training.”

He also approved full scholarships for nine girls who performed enrollment songs during the event.

The governor commissioned the Government Day Secondary School, Gajiganna, which is expected to serve as a hub for pupils graduating from local primary schools.

Speaking at the event, Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Engr. Lawan Abba Wakilbe, commended Governor Zulum’s transformative efforts in education. He revealed that:

“So far, the administration has delivered 104 mega schools in six years, with 35 more under construction. This speaks volumes about the governor’s commitment not just to infrastructure, but to shaping the future of generations yet unborn.”

The event was attended by senate Chief Whip, Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno, Senators Kaka Shehu Lawan and other federal lawmakers, Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan, APC Chairman, Bello Ayuba, Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Bukar Tijani, Deputy Chief of Staff, Dr. Babagana Mustapha Mallumbe, among other senior state officials.

SDP Disowns Owerri Summit, Labels It Illegal As Leadership Rift Worsens

The internal crisis plaguing the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has taken a new turn, as the Dr. Abubakar Gombe-led National Working Committee (NWC) has disassociated the party from a political summit scheduled for Friday, September 5, 2025, in Owerri, Imo State.

The summit, tagged the “SDP Political Conference Summit”, is being organized by a faction loyal to Adamu Abubakar Modibbo, a group the Gombe-led leadership has branded as illegal.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Friday, SDP National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, described the summit as an “illegality” being orchestrated by dissidents seeking to drag the party into an unofficial alliance with the ADC (African Democratic Congress), a coalition he alleges is being pushed by former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

“The so-called summit is an illegality being committed by a group of dissidents whose overarching objective is to deceive our members and lure them into the ADC coalition,” Aiyenigba stated.

“Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, who is behind this, is no longer a member of the SDP and cannot speak or act on behalf of the party.”

The Gombe-led NWC reminded the public that on July 28, 2025, El-Rufai, Modibbo, and seven others were expelled from the party for a period of 30 years and are currently facing legal action over actions considered harmful to the party’s interests.

“Members of the SDP, particularly in Imo State, the South-East, and the general public, are advised to disregard the scheduled ‘SDP Political Conference Summit’ as it has no connection to our party,” the statement added.

“The SDP is not part of any ADC coalition and remains committed to its founding ideology and core manifesto.”

The summit controversy stems from a broader leadership crisis that began in June 2025, when then National Chairman Alhaji Shehu Gabam was suspended over allegations of financial misconduct, alongside two NWC members accused of unauthorized transactions and misappropriation of party funds.

In the aftermath, a factional group led by Adamu Modibbo emerged from an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on July 25, with claims of support from 23 state chairmen.

Modibbo was declared Acting National Chairman and immediately initiated sweeping reforms, including the dissolution of standing committees.

However, the Abubakar-led NWC rejected the NEC meeting as unconstitutional, with SDP National Secretary Dr. Olu Agunloye describing the gathering as “irregular and not sanctioned.”

Despite Modibbo’s calls for unity and reconciliation, the Gombe-led faction maintains it remains the legitimate leadership of the party.

The SDP leadership under Dr. Gombe insists it is focused on restoring internal order and rebuilding party structures across the state and national levels.

“We remain the authentic leadership and are committed to presenting the SDP as a strong, credible alternative in Nigeria’s political landscape,” the statement concluded.

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a man, Eze Elechi Amadi, for allegedly murdering his 18-year-old younger brother, Otu Ifeanyi and attempting to dispose of his body by hiding it inside a plastic drum.

Amadi was paraded alongside 99 other suspects at the Police Headquarters in Akure over the weekend.

According to the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, the suspect was apprehended on August 26, 2025, after a concerned resident, Oluwafemi Oladipupo, alerted authorities to a suspicious drum spotted in front of his home on Paragon Street, Kajola, in Odigbo Local Government Area.

“The blue plastic drum, tied with a black rope, was being transported on a motorcycle by the suspect when it fell off. Upon inspection, the lifeless body of the victim was discovered inside,” CP Lawal said.

The body was later identified as that of the suspect’s younger brother. Police officers at Kajola Divisional Headquarters immediately arrested Amadi, who later confessed to the crime.

“During interrogation, the suspect admitted to killing his younger brother over a financial dispute,” the CP stated.

“He claimed that the deceased had unlawfully transferred ₦20,000 from his Ecobank account.”

Lawal confirmed that the body has been deposited at the morgue, and further investigation is ongoing.

The suspect will be charged to court once the investigation is completed.

During the briefing, the Police Commissioner also gave an overview of the Command’s recent security operations across Ondo State’s 18 local government areas, which resulted in the arrest of 100 suspects involved in various criminal activities.

These crimes include murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism, drug possession, theft, fraud, illegal arms possession and vehicle-related offenses.

Recovered items during these operations include locally made firearms, 30 rounds of AA cartridges, stolen vehicles and motorcycles, fake vehicle documents and license plates and asorted stolen goods like mobile phones, mattresses, jewelry, SIM cards and other personal items.

CP Lawal praised the efforts of officers and the support of local residents, which he described as instrumental in the successes recorded.

“These achievements reflect the dedication of our officers and the invaluable cooperation of the good people of Ondo State,” he said.

He credited the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for providing strategic direction and inspiring professionalism within the Force.

“We remain committed to protecting lives and property across Ondo State, and we’ll continue to pursue criminals with renewed vigor,” Lawal added.

Eight personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been killed and one Chinese expatriate abducted in a violent ambush by suspected kidnappers in Okpella, located in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.

The incident occurred on Friday night, as the officers attached to the BUA Cement Company were providing escort for five Chinese workers returning from a routine patrol.

Sources told Daily Trust that the attackers, heavily armed and lying in wait near the company’s main gate, opened fire on the security team at around 10:00 pm, resulting in the deaths of eight NSCDC officials.

Four others, along with one civilian, sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Out of the five expatriates being escorted, four were rescued unhurt, while one was abducted and taken into the nearby forest by the assailants.

Anioma Faced Ethnic Cleansing In Delta, Forcing Us To Reject Our Igbo Identity – Senator Nwoko

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparation and Repatriation, Senator Ned Nwoko (APC, Delta North), has called on the Anioma people of Delta State to fully embrace their Igbo heritage, while urging greater unity with their Eastern Nigerian counterparts to build a stronger and more inclusive nation.

Speaking in Asaba at a conference jointly organised by the Igbo Unification Movement and Ndi na Asu Bia Socio-Cultural Organisation, themed “Igbo Bu Ofu” (Igbos are One), Nwoko said the time had come to shed old divisions and embrace historical truth.

In a statement from his office on Friday, he praised the organisers for their “courage and vision,” noting that the conference reflects his long-standing commitment to Anioma identity and his advocacy for the creation of Anioma State out of Delta North.

“These groups have become strong voices advocating for the cultural, historical, and political unity of Igbo-speaking communities,” the statement noted, referring to areas such as Anioma (Delta North), Igbanke in Edo, and other border communities.

The goal, according to the groups, is to rebuild cultural identity, enhance political leverage, and reverse decades of historical distortion.

“There is no argument about our Igbo-ness. I understand history very well. I have a degree in history. I know the migration of the Igbo people, and I know clearly that we, the Anioma, are Igbo,” Senator Nwoko said.

“Time has come for us to reverse the old narratives that separated us from our brothers across the Niger.”

The senator reiterated that his drive to establish Anioma State in the National Assembly stems from the need to restore justice, not political ambition.

“This is not about APC, PDP, or Labour Party. It is about identity, justice, and fairness. I have no interest in being governor, but I want Anioma to stand tall with its own state, with Asaba as its capital. That way, we also fulfill the dream of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, which has always recognized Anioma as one of the Igbo states,” he explained.

Nwoko also reflected on his personal experiences during the Nigerian Civil War, recalling a painful chapter of ethnic cleansing endured by Anioma communities.

He said people were often forced to deny their Igbo heritage in order to survive, a situation that has had long-lasting effects on their collective identity.

“The lingering identity crisis from that era must now give way to truth and reconciliation,” he urged.

He acknowledged the academic contributions of individuals like Professor Abigail Ogwezzy of the University of Lagos, whose linguistic and historical research has strengthened the understanding of Anioma’s Igbo origins.

“The Igbo man is Igbo everywhere, whether from Delta, Imo, or Abia. Just like a Chinese man remains Chinese anywhere in the world, Anioma must rise to embrace its identity. That is the only way we can achieve unity and political relevance,” he said.

Senator Nwoko, who also chairs the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Crude Oil Theft, encouraged the Igbo Unification Movement, Ndi na Asu Bia, and similar groups to continue their work in advocacy, education, and mobilisation.

He emphasized that unity and persistence would be key to realising both the dream of an Anioma State and a unified Igbo nation.
