Former VP Namadi Sambo Denies Allegations Of Political Interference In 2013 Power Sector Privatization

Former Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo has dismissed claims made earlier by Dr. Shamsudeen Usman, a former Minister of Budget and National Planning, who alleged that the 2013 power sector privatization was influenced by political interests rather than being based on the technical and financial capabilities of the buyers.

In a statement released by his Personal Secretary, Mr. Yinka Ibrahim, Sambo described the allegations as “false, mischievous, and hypocritical,” emphasizing that they were aimed at tarnishing the reputation of the Goodluck Jonathan administration and the National Council on Privatization, which he chaired at the time.

“My attention was drawn to a shocking statement attributed to Dr. Usman, suggesting that political considerations influenced the selection of preferred bidders during the privatization process. This is utterly ridiculous and a complete falsehood,” the statement declared.

Dr. Usman had made the remarks at a recent event in Abuja, claiming that political figures within the Jonathan administration vied for stakes in the privatized power companies.

Sambo, however, rejected these claims as unfounded, stating, “As Chairman of the Privatization Council, I carried out the responsibilities in line with established procedures and in the best interest of the nation, which was widely acknowledged by both local and international communities.”

He also noted, “It is on record that the Minister of Power at the time had to resign due to apparent conflict of interest in the privatization process.”

“And to further ensure transparency in the privatization process, Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies; the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (ICPC) were included as statutory members of the Council.”

The statement challenged Dr. Usman to provide “specific detail of the ‘foul plays’ or names of persons or organizations he claimed was politically favored or compromised.”

Sambo questioned the timing and motive behind the former minister’s comments, pointing out that Dr. Usman was deeply involved in the privatization process and chaired several committees.

“It is surprising that he would make such accusations more than a decade later. One can only wonder if this is an attempt to curry favor with the current administration,” the statement added.

Finally, Sambo advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Finance, Mr. Wale Edun, to exercise caution in dealing with Dr. Usman, describing him as inconsistent and disloyal.

“It is unfortunate to see someone who was so close to power and indeed the privatization process now turning around to discredit it. This is a classic case of biting the hand that fed him,” the statement concluded.

We May Join Israeli Military In Strikes Against Iran – Trump

President Donald Trump has declined to confirm whether the United States will support Israel militarily in its ongoing conflict with Iran, saying only, “I may do it, I may not do it. Nobody knows what I want to do.”

Speaking to reporters outside the White House during a flagpole installation event, Trump added, “Iran’s got a lot of trouble and wants to negotiate.”

The comments come amid heightened tensions between Israel and Iran. Israel launched airstrikes overnight targeting two of Iran’s centrifuge production sites, according to the UN’s nuclear watchdog.

Iran retaliated, claiming it had fired a hypersonic missile at Israel.

Earlier, Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, warned the U.S. of “irreparable harm” if it enters the conflict, stating that Iran “will never surrender in response to the attacks of anyone.”

Khamenei, who holds the most power in Iran, including over foreign policy and nuclear negotiations, has dismissed Trump’s demands for unconditional surrender.

The Supreme Leader also claimed that U.S. involvement would be “100% to its own detriment.”

In response to Iran’s defiance, Trump took to Truth Social, posting: “We know exactly where the so-called ‘Supreme Leader’ is hiding… We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now… but our patience is wearing thin.”

He followed up with a terse declaration: “UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!”

Despite escalating rhetoric, Trump has so far avoided direct military action.

Analysts suggest he faces a complex choice: uphold his “peacemaker” image that resonates with his political base or take a hardline stance on Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Speaking further, Trump said that Iranian negotiators have indicated they “may come to the White House,” though he noted the difficulty in such arrangements.

He added, “Two very simple words: unconditional surrender. I’ve had it.”

Meanwhile, Israel continues its campaign. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported it has achieved air superiority over key Iranian areas, particularly around Tehran.

According to IDF spokesperson Lt Col Nadav Shoshani, Israeli intelligence teams completed detailed mapping of Iran’s air defense infrastructure early in 2025, enabling successful strikes.

With Iran’s air defenses weakened and its air force largely grounded, Israel has maintained control of the skies.

Nonetheless, Iran claimed one success, the downing of an Israeli drone using a surface-to-air missile.

At the same time, humanitarian conditions in Iran are deteriorating.

Citizens in cities like Karaj and Qazvin have reported food and fuel shortages, crowded bakeries, and non-functional bank cards.

One Tehran resident told BBC Persian, “There are enough essentials, but shelves are being restocked slowly. Gas stations are still crowded.”

British national Naomi Brookarsh, who survived a missile strike while visiting her brother in Tel Aviv, described the experience as “like an apocalypse.”

She credited a bomb shelter with saving their lives during the attack.

Back in Washington, Trump’s public schedule appears light. Aside from a ceremonial swearing-in and a lunch with Pakistan’s military chief, no major public events are planned. Still, the unpredictability surrounding his decision-making remains a central feature of the crisis.

As he put it himself: “I may do it, I may not do it.”

Mokwa Flood: 700 Still Missing, Over 200 Confirmed Dead – Niger Govt

The Niger State Government has confirmed that around 700 individuals remain missing following the catastrophic flood that swept through Mokwa, describing the event as a national disaster.

Governor Umaru Bago, represented by his deputy Yakubu Garba, disclosed the figures during a condolence visit from the former Chief Security Officer to Gen. Sani Abacha and his associates on Tuesday in Minna.

“Over 700 persons are still missing, and we are yet to ascertain where they are. The flooding has caused extensive damage,” Garba stated.

He also revealed the official death toll had risen to 207, with more than 3,000 households displaced by the flooding.

According to the deputy governor, the destruction was extensive, with 400 homes damaged, while 283 houses and 50 shops were completely destroyed.

During the visit, Hamza Al-Mustapha, former CSO to Gen. Abacha, expressed deep sympathy on behalf of his delegation to the government and people of Niger State.

“We are here to register our condolences over the flood incident that happened in Mokwa, looking at the heavy losses and its impact on the state,” he said.

He added that the group planned to visit local leaders to extend support and prayers.

“We will meet with the traditional council, especially the chairman in Mokwa, and pray that the incident doesn’t happen again,” Al-Mustapha said.

Efforts to provide relief and accountability are ongoing, while related organizations continue to urge the federal government to prioritize infrastructure maintenance and enforce stricter building regulations in flood-prone areas.

Ondo Community Still Bears Scars Of Biafra-Nigeria Civil War, 54 Years Later — No Water, No Schools, No Aid

More than half a century after the Nigeria-Biafra civil war ended, residents of Foriku-Boridele, a small community in Ondo State near Ore, say they are still trapped in the aftermath of the conflict, with no basic infrastructure, lingering danger, and no government aid.

The Nigeria-Biafra war, which began on July 6, 1967, and ended on January 15, 1970, left deep scars across the country.

Foriku, once a battleground between federal troops and Biafran forces, has yet to recover.

According to a report by BBC Pidgin, old military hardware is still scattered across the farmland, while locals say the soil remains unsafe for farming due to war-era contamination.

Some residents say unexploded devices and dangerous chemicals still appear when they dig.

Odukoya Akinmeje, who now leads the Foriku community, recalled his experience as a child when the war reached their village.

“They said it was over, so we came back, but within a week, the soldiers had returned,” he said, remembering the renewed violence as troops marched through the roads near their homes.

Johnson Danjuma, a resident whose family settled in the area before the war, shared that the land, once thought to be rich and productive, has instead become difficult and dangerous.

He described how families fled into the bush to survive.

“Even pregnant women were forced to deliver without shelter,” he said.

The lack of clean water and sanitation continues to haunt the community. Gbenga Adeyemi, a local youth leader, told BBC Pidgin that after the war, some young people died after consuming water contaminated by chemicals left behind.

“The land remains damaged and there’s been little to no support from government authorities,” he lamented.

Foriku’s struggles extend beyond environmental concerns.

The community lacks basic infrastructure, there are no schools, no medical facilities, and no reliable sources of drinking water.

Elizabeth Iwam, who was raised in Foriku, told BBC Pidgin how she used to walk long distances to attend school, a challenge that eventually forced her to drop out.

“Children now face the same challenges we did, coupled with the fear that memories of war still instil,” she said.

Residents say they feel forgotten by the very nation they remained loyal to during the war.

Many believe the federal and state governments have abandoned them, even as they continue to deal with the emotional and physical damage inflicted more than five decades ago.

Despite the passage of time, Foriku remains a stark reminder of a war that ended on paper but never truly ended in their lives.

NASS Transmits Tax Reform Bills To President Tinubu For Assent

The National Assembly has officially transmitted the tax reform bills to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his assent, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Yemi Adaramodu (APC, Ekiti South), revealed during a press briefing in Abuja yesterday.

President Tinubu had initially sent four tax reform bills to the National Assembly last year, requesting their consideration and passage.

The bills sparked intense debates but were eventually approved by both chambers. On May 25, 2025, the harmonised versions from both chambers were adopted and prepared for transmission to the President.

Senator Adaramodu explained the process, saying, “Yes, the bill has now been transmitted. It is out of our hands and on its way to the executive.”

He further highlighted the thoroughness required in handling such legislation, adding, “Tax bills like these require careful scrutiny. Legal departments in both chambers must ensure they align with existing laws before we send them to the Presidency.”

The senator also clarified that the process takes time, noting, “It’s not a matter of two or three days. After harmonisation, the Clerk of the National Assembly prepares the final document. Only then can the Senate President and the Speaker sign off for transmission.”

Alleged Money Laundering: EFCC Re-Arraigns Bauchi Accountant-General, BDC Operator

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arraigned the Accountant-General of Bauchi State, Mr. Sirajo Jaja, alongside a Bureau de Change (BDC) operator, Aliyu Abubakar, on fresh allegations of money laundering involving state funds.

The duo appeared before Justice Obiora Egwuatu at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday, where they were presented with a five-count amended charge. Both Jaja and Abubakar pleaded not guilty.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), this marks a re-arraignment following their initial court appearance on April 7, when Jaja, Abubakar, and Abubakar’s company, Jasfad Resources Enterprise, were arraigned as the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd defendants respectively.

Under the amended charge, filed with suit number FHC/ABJ/CR/101/2025, Abubakar, described as trading under the name and style of Jasfad Resources Enterprise, is now the 1st defendant, while Jaja is listed as the 2nd.

During the hearing, EFCC counsel Abba Mohammed, SAN, informed the court of the amended charge, stating:

“May I draw the attention of the court to the proof of evidence filed in May 30 and another one filed in June 16.
We pray that the amended charge be read to the defendants.”

Lawyers for the defendants, Gordy Uche, SAN (for Abubakar) and Chief Chris Uche, SAN (for Jaja), did not oppose the application. After the charges were read, the two defendants entered not guilty pleas.

The defence then requested that the existing bail conditions previously granted to the defendants be maintained. With no objection from the prosecution, the court ruled that:

The duo should continue under the same bail terms.

Though Mohammed told the court that a prosecution witness was present to testify, both defence teams sought an adjournment to allow time to review new materials recently served.

“We will be constraint to ask for an adjournment. The additional proof of evidence, especially number two, was just served on us late yesterday. I have not even have the opportunity to confront my client with it.
Secondly, this morning, we were served with this amended charge. Even though we have not read through it, we felt we should not stall the proceedings,” Abubakar’s lawyer said.

Chief Uche also echoed the request for more preparation time. With no opposition from the prosecution, Justice Egwuatu granted the adjournment, fixing the trial to begin on July 21.

In the first count of the amended charge, the EFCC alleged that Abubakar, operating through Jasfad Resources Enterprise, conspired with Jaja, and others, Abubakar Hafiz, Ari Manga, and Muhammed Bose (who are still at large), between 2024 and 2025, to commit money laundering.

The Commission accused the group of converting public funds from the Bauchi State Sub-Treasury Account at the United Bank for Africa (UBA) into Jasfad Resources Enterprise’s account in the same bank.

The charge further states that this act was:

“Contrary to Section 21(a) and punishable under Section 18(3) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.”

Additionally, the alleged fund transfers violated provisions of the Foreign Exchange Monitoring and Miscellaneous (Provisions) Act, specifically:

“Contrary to Sections 5 and 29(1)(c) of the Foreign Exchange Monitoring and Miscellaneous (Provisions) Act Cap F34 LFN 2010 and punishable under Section 29(2) of the same Act,”

The trial is now set to commence on July 21, 2025.

INEC Rejects PDP NEC Meeting Notice Over Lack Of Proper Endorsement

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declined to accept the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) notification for its upcoming 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, citing a procedural violation in how the notice was submitted.

In a letter dated June 13, 2025, and addressed to PDP’s National Chairman, INEC pointed out that the notification did not align with the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties.

The Commission referred specifically to Part 2(12)3, which outlines that:

“The National Chairman and National Secretary of the Party shall jointly sign the notice of convention, congress, conference or meeting and submit same to the Commission.”

The letter, signed by INEC’s Acting Secretary, Hajiya Hau’ru Aminu, highlighted that the PDP’s submitted notice failed to meet this requirement.

“The Commission draws your attention that the notice is not in compliance… Be guided,” the letter stated.

Although the PDP filed the notice within the 21-day legal timeframe, it was reportedly endorsed solely by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, without the signature of National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, a key procedural lapse.

According to the PDP’s earlier communication to INEC, dated May 30, 2025, the NEC meeting is scheduled for June 30 at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.

The gathering is expected to deliberate on a number of internal matters, including unresolved leadership tensions, ratification of zonal congresses, and the review of various committee reports.

The party has been grappling with deep-seated internal conflict in the aftermath of the 2023 general elections, which led to waves of defections.

High-profile exits included Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his deputy Monday Onyeme, and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, among other political stakeholders in the state, who all joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in April.

In response, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) convened an emergency meeting that same month at the party’s Abuja secretariat to discuss the crisis.

More recently, on June 9, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and members of the influential G5 group held a meeting in which they called for the PDP to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, signaling early moves in shaping the party’s political direction.

Meanwhile, Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate, has launched a series of consultations in an effort to unite key opposition figures.

His discussions with politicians such as Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai are aimed at forming a broader coalition to challenge what he has described as the emergence of a de facto “one-party state” under the ruling APC.

However, not everyone in the party supports the coalition idea.

Some prominent PDP members, including Bode George, remain optimistic that the party will regroup and emerge stronger ahead of the planned NEC meeting.

FG Orders Immediate Evacuation Of Nigerians In Israel, Iran

The Federal Government of Nigeria has initiated emergency plans to evacuate its citizens currently stranded in Israel and Iran, following a dangerous escalation in hostilities between the two nations.

In a statement released Tuesday night, Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that Nigerian embassies in Tel Aviv and Tehran have already begun identifying affected citizens and coordinating evacuation efforts.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform that following the escalation of the crisis between the State of Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Federal Government is finalising arrangements for the emergency evacuation of stranded Nigerians in both countries,” the statement read.

Nigerians currently residing in conflict-affected areas have been urged to stay calm, adhere strictly to security advisories issued by local authorities, and make immediate contact with the nearest Nigerian diplomatic mission.

The Ministry said that both embassies are actively compiling lists of Nigerian nationals and are working tirelessly to ensure their safety.

“The Ministry commends the efforts put in place by our Missions in Tel Aviv, Israel, and Tehran, Iran, for their dedication and commitment to reaching out to the Nigerian community in these difficult times,” Ebienfa stated.

Reaffirming its commitment to the safety of Nigerians abroad, the Federal Government noted that it is working in close coordination with international agencies and local governments to ensure the evacuation process proceeds smoothly and efficiently.

The Ministry also used the occasion to issue another appeal for peace in the region.

“Nigeria reiterates its call for the immediate cessation of hostilities and urges all parties involved to embrace dialogue, respect international humanitarian law and prioritise the protection of civilians,” the ministry said.

This announcement follows a massive Israeli air assault on Friday that reportedly struck nearly 100 targets across Iran.

The attacks are said to have killed several top Iranian military leaders, including General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, and Hossein Salami, Commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

In response, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei denounced the attacks as a “declaration of war” and promised a “bitter and painful” retaliation. Iranian military officials also vowed an “unlimited response.”

Further updates, including the specific dates and logistics of the evacuation, will be released soon through official government platforms.

UNILAG Warns Against Fraudsters Impersonating Vice-Chancellor In Fake Procurement Schemes

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has issued a stern warning regarding individuals falsely posing as the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, to carry out fraudulent procurement activities.

According to a statement from Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, UNILAG’s Head of Communication, scammers have been contacting people through social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, X, and WhatsApp, falsely claiming to be the Vice-Chancellor.

They attempt to orchestrate bogus procurement transactions involving laptops and computers, insisting on secrecy, upfront payments, and suspicious financial arrangements.

“Reports indicate that these fraudsters have contacted individuals via social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, X and WhatsApp), falsely claiming to be the Vice-Chancellor and attempting to orchestrate sham procurement processes for laptops/computers, with fabricated requirements for secrecy, upfront payments and improper financial arrangements,” the statement said.

These scammers have even suggested an unlawful 60/40 profit-sharing arrangement and directed communications through private email addresses instead of official UNILAG domains.

The university reaffirmed that all procurements are conducted transparently and competitively, strictly following Nigerian Procurement Laws.

“At no time would any legitimate representative of UNILAG, least of all the Vice-Chancellor, request upfront payments, propose kickback arrangements, or conduct official business through personal email accounts or social media platforms,” the institution emphasized.

UNILAG urged the public to consider any such communication as fraudulent and to report it immediately.

The institution also revealed that it has reported the matter to law enforcement agencies, aiming to bring the culprits to justice.

“We have already taken swift action by escalating this matter to the appropriate law enforcement agencies. The University is cooperating fully with investigators to identify and prosecute those responsible for this criminal impersonation,” the statement added.

To safeguard the public and the university, UNILAG encouraged everyone to be extremely cautious, stressing that official communications will only come through verifiable institutional channels.

“Should you receive any suspicious approaches claiming association with UNILAG leadership, please verify through our official email, communicationunit@unilag.edu.ng or contact the Vice-Chancellor’s office directly at vcoffice@unilag.edu.ng,” the university advised.

UNILAG condemned the misuse of its name and the impersonation of its officials for fraudulent purposes and reiterated its commitment to integrity and transparency.

“Together, through vigilance and cooperation, we can protect the integrity of our beloved institution and prevent others from falling victim to these predatory schemes.”

Police Quiz Pastor Adefarasin Over Viral Firearm Video

Detectives from the Lagos State Police Command have taken Pastor Paul Adefarasin of House on the Rock in for questioning following the circulation of a viral video that appears to show him wielding a pistol.

The video first appeared on social media on Friday, shared by an X user who credited a Lagos-based content creator known for capturing footage of exotic cars.

The caption claimed that Adefarasin flashed a gun at the videographer for filming his vehicle.

In the brief 10-second clip, a Range Rover slows down toward the man filming.

The tinted window is lowered, prompting the content creator to greet the pastor, who then interrupts and inaudibly reprimands him while flashing what looked like a firearm.

The cameraman apologizes as the vehicle drives away.

Following the video’s widespread attention, the pastor, who is the Prelate and Metropolitan Senior Pastor of House on the Rock, was invited by the police and reportedly turned himself in on Tuesday afternoon at the State Command Headquarters in Ikeja, accompanied by his lawyer.

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the pastor’s voluntary appearance and the ongoing investigation.

The statement reads: “Pastor Paul Adefarasin has turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja and is currently being interrogated by detectives who have commenced investigation on the case since a video surfaced online showing the pastor holding a gun-like object against another road user, while driving in an unregistered vehicle.

“The outcome of the investigation will be made public.”

Responding to the allegations during Sunday’s sermon, the 62-year-old cleric described the viral video as a misunderstanding.

“I was shocked and deeply hurt by the false claims,” Adefarasin said. “This was the work of clickbaiters chasing money, truth was never their goal.”

He firmly denied possessing or brandishing any firearm.

“I do not have a pistol license. I do not carry a gun. The accusation is completely false,” he stated.

The pastor called on the public to ignore the misinformation, quoting Romans 12:19: “Vengeance belongs to God.”
