2027: ADC Gains Ground As Atiku, Obi Conclude Plan To Join Party

As Nigeria’s opposition parties wrestle with internal conflicts and diminishing unity, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has unexpectedly emerged as a central platform for key opposition figures eyeing the 2027 presidential race.

The party, historically linked to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, is currently in discussions with both former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi.

With the PDP and Labour Party struggling to resolve deep internal rifts, both men are reportedly evaluating the ADC as a neutral coalition base.

At a press briefing, ADC chieftain Mani Ahmed stated, “I can categorically inform you that the African Democratic Congress is the coalition party in Nigeria. What remains is merely dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s.”

A source close to Atiku confirmed to DAILY GAZETTE that the talks are progressing, though the former VP is still watching to see whether the PDP can recover from its ongoing crisis.

“Atiku is still weighing his options along with Obi. Should the PDP collapse irretrievably, then the ADC will become the platform of choice,” the source revealed.

The PDP is currently split among Atiku’s loyalists, a faction led by ex-Governor Nyesom Wike, now in Tinubu’s cabinet, and another camp aligned with Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.

Zoning disagreements, especially Wike’s push for a southern presidency until 2031, have stalled party unity since 2023.

Similarly, Labour Party’s internal conflict has intensified.

Party chairman Julius Abure has clashed with Peter Obi over control of the party, leading to suspensions of some of Obi’s allies and diminishing the movement’s post-election strength.

Meanwhile, President Tinubu’s APC has taken advantage of the situation to expand.

In Delta State, long a PDP stronghold, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his deputy, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and other PDP figures recently defected to the APC.

Vice President Kashim Shettima called the move a “political tsunami of unimaginable proportions that has never happened in the history of the South-South and the history of Nigeria.”

Political realignments are also underway in other regions. Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra has gravitated toward Tinubu, and Kano opposition lawmakers have switched allegiance to the APC.

In Akwa Ibom, Governor Umo Eno publicly endorsed Tinubu’s reelection bid, though PDP governors have rejected any plans for a merger.

In this evolving context, the ADC is being considered a safe harbor for politicians disillusioned with their parties.

Though it has yet to hold national power and has won limited legislative seats since its creation in 2005, its relative stability is attracting attention.

The party was previously used in 2019 as a brief coalition vehicle endorsed by Obasanjo before Atiku and Obi ran together under the PDP.

While some are weighing alternatives like the Social Democratic Party (SDP), which recently welcomed former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, its own internal disputes have made the ADC a more viable fallback.

Speculation is mounting that Atiku and Obi may reunite under a one-term arrangement, with Atiku running for president and Obi as vice president.

However, Obi’s supporters have raised concerns about fairness and hierarchy.

“Even when Tinubu wasn’t in control of the central government, he never lost an election,” observed Busari Dauda, a political analyst at the University of Ibadan.

“Now that he controls all the levers of power, it is next to impossible for them to stop him. Only God can stop him at this point.”

With the race to 2027 heating up, whether the fractured opposition can unify around a party like the ADC may determine if Nigeria’s next election will present a serious challenge to Tinubu or merely reinforce his grip on power.

Enugu Police Smash Kidnappers’ Den, Rescue 28 Victims, Arrest 10 Suspects

In a major breakthrough against violent crime, operatives of the Enugu State Police Command, under the directive of Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, have rescued 28 kidnapped victims, arrested 10 male suspects, and recovered firearms, ammunition, cash, vehicles, motorcycles, and other incriminating exhibits in multiple coordinated operations across the state.

In a statement made available to DAILY GAZETTE on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said operatives attached to Umumba Police Division, working in synergy with the Neighbourhood Watch, Forest Guards, and community members, rescued two male and two female victims on May 18, 2025, around 6:30 pm.

The victims had been kidnapped along the Umumba-Ndiuno-Aguoba Road in Ezeagu Local Government Area and were rescued following a tactical bush-combing operation.

“Four male suspects linked to the crime were immediately arrested and are currently assisting with ongoing investigations,” Ndukwe stated.

On the same day, around 6:34 p.m., operatives from the 9th Mile Division responded swiftly to a distress call and rescued a male suspect from a violent mob.

According to the statement, the suspect and three others had attempted to kidnap a woman who raised an alarm, causing the suspects to abandon her and flee.

The rearrested suspect, who sustained injuries from the mob beating, was taken to a hospital for treatment and is under investigation.

In a related development, operatives from the Okpuje Police Division, in collaboration with the Neighbourhood Watch and Forest Guards, on May 17, 2025, conducted a strategic bush-combing operation in a forest bordering Okpuje in Enugu State and Odolu in Kogi State.

During the operation, two men were intercepted with ₦150,000.00 and ₦70,000.00 respectively, allegedly meant for ransom payments.

They were also found with loaves of bread and drinks, reportedly demanded by the kidnappers.

As the operation progressed, the team encountered armed resistance but overpowered the kidnappers with superior firepower.

The assailants fled with gunshot wounds, abandoning their captives, a pump-action gun, and two live cartridges.

The victims were rescued unhurt, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.

Earlier, on May 14, 2025, at about 5:30 am, operatives from Igbo-Eze North Division, working with the Military and Neighbourhood Watch, rescued 21 kidnapped victims in Amaka-Okpodu, Kogi State.

The victims, some of whom were returning from a traditional marriage ceremony, were abducted on May 10 along the Iyionu-Aguibeje Road in Igbo-Eze North LGA by hooded armed men.

Five suspects were arrested following credible intelligence, and three firearms were recovered.

A minibus and four motorcycles used by the victims were also recovered from the scene.

In another operation, on May 13, 2025, at about 9:45 pm, operatives of the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad, acting on credible intelligence, rescued a kidnapped victim along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.

The victim’s Toyota Camry was recovered, alongside a white Toyota Corolla (registration number ENU 703 LP) used by the suspects, and a Lexus 330 Jeep abandoned at the kidnapping scene in Premier Layout, Independence Layout, Enugu. Manhunt operations for the fleeing suspects are ongoing.

CP Giwa commended the police operatives, supporting security agencies, and law-abiding community members for their collaborative efforts in ensuring the success of these operations.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to making Enugu State safer by rooting out violent criminals and their operations, urging residents to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and supportive of law enforcement agencies.

2027: Obi Set To Declare For Presidency As Atiku Eyes ADC Alliance

Amid intensifying political alignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, fresh indications have emerged that Mr. Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), is preparing to declare his intention to run for president again, this time without playing second fiddle.

This development coincides with reports of ongoing negotiations between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following the breakdown of a proposed coalition deal between their political camps.

Political analysts maintain that any proposal suggesting Obi would return as Atiku’s running mate, as was the case in the 2019 presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), would face strong resistance from both the South-East region and the nationwide Obidient Movement.

Multiple sources confirmed to DAILY GAZETTE that Obi is finalising plans to officially announce his 2027 presidential ambition.

He is also expected to unveil the political platform under which he will contest in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Atiku is said to be in advanced talks with the ADC, led by Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu.

Insiders told our correspondent that the former vice president has already reached an understanding with the party and may contest under its banner if coalition talks with Obi fail to produce a unified ticket.

DAILY GAZETTE reports that a recent meeting held in London between both camps, Obi’s team and Atiku’s delegation led by former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai ended without resolution after three days of negotiations.

Speaking on the matter, elder statesman and founding national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr. Chekwas Okorie, confirmed Obi’s imminent declaration.

“I am in a position to know. Peter Obi will not run as anyone’s running mate. He led his team in a three-day meeting with Atiku’s team, and they could not agree on the vice-presidential offer being speculated in the media,” Okorie said.

“Obi has achieved a level of political mileage that cannot be subsumed under another candidate.”

“Within the week, he will present himself as a presidential contender and may unveil the party platform he intends to use.”

Okorie also hinted at a broader shakeup, noting that the ADC could soon witness a leadership restructuring as part of its negotiations with Atiku.

He stated that several key political figures, including former ministers from the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), are now aligning with the ADC, under the influence of El-Rufai and former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami.

“The new ADC will include a substantial part of the old CPC network. This is shaping up into a three-horse race for 2027,” he said.

When contacted, ADC National Chairman Chief Nwosu acknowledged that the party has been approached by multiple politicians, though he declined to confirm Atiku’s intentions.

He reiterated that the party’s primary and national convention would determine its standard-bearer for the 2027 elections.

Across the South-East, Obi’s 2023 candidacy is still seen as a pivotal moment in the region’s political assertion.

Many believe that accepting a secondary role now would diminish both the symbolism of that campaign and the momentum of the Obidient Movement, especially among youth and urban voters.

Driven by a desire for a transformative break from the past, many of Obi’s followers remain deeply sceptical of any partnership with Atiku, a figure widely seen as representative of the old political order.

Zoning considerations also weigh heavily. In the South-East, there is a strong belief that it is the region’s turn to produce Nigeria’s next president.

Another vice-presidential bid under a northern candidate, critics argue, would only further marginalize the zone politically.

The fallout from the 2023 elections, in which Atiku’s candidacy weakened PDP’s performance in the South-East following Obi’s departure to the Labour Party, highlights the potential risks of such an alliance.

Observers argue that even a renewed Atiku-Obi ticket is unlikely to galvanize the region without clear and binding power-sharing arrangements, an idea many remain wary of.

Both camps, however, have strongly denied recent media reports of a 2027 Atiku-Obi ticket, describing them as attempts to sow discord within opposition ranks.

Reacting through his Special Adviser on Media, Paul Ibe, Atiku dismissed the rumoured pairing as speculative.

“A thing like this isn’t something you throw around carelessly,” Ibe cautioned.

He confirmed that discussions are ongoing among opposition figures to build a unified coalition but stressed that no decisions have been finalised.

“What I can officially confirm to you is that they’re working seriously with all the opposition leaders to build a very viable coalition platform. Some of the details are still under wraps, not yet public.”

“But the process is ongoing, and change is going to happen sooner than later. When the coalition finally comes together and takes off, you can be sure people will get on board at multiple stations along the track.”

Asked about the reported opposition from PDP governors, Ibe said: “Well, PDP governors are respected stakeholders. But Nigerians know what direction they want. That much is clear. Power truly belongs to the people. And the people are powering this coalition process. What does that tell you?”

The Obidient Movement, through its Director of Strategic Communication and Media, Nana Kazaure, also rejected the reports.

“Even as we know that the publication is imaginary to the author, we are tempted not to ignore it because of the possible far-reaching misconception it will have in the public space,” she said.

Kazaure continued: “The Obidient Movement has been inundated with calls from our members within and outside the country, including other members of the public, regarding a media publication claiming that our principal, Peter Obi, has been offered the running mate position to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the new coalition being formed ahead of 2027.”

“While frank and cordial engagements with our partners and stakeholders towards a coalition continue amicably, the Obidient Movement would like to state emphatically that there is no truth or basis to the reports whatsoever.”

“Without any risk of contradiction, we would like to reiterate that Mr. Obi has maintained that his objective and his involvement in a coalition is to provide a united front against and to tackle issues of bad governance, corruption, hunger, poverty, poor healthcare, out-of-school children, and the myriad of other problems daily afflicting the people of Nigeria.”

She added that Obi remains a member of the Labour Party and that any change in affiliation would be personally announced by him: “At this difficult time, all Nigerians, including the media, should focus on contributing to building a better country.”

Meanwhile, Peter Obi, during a visit to the Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kubwa in Abuja, restated that he is not driven by personal ambition, but by a mission to address Nigeria’s most pressing problems.

“I am in a coalition against hunger, in coalition against poverty, in coalition against the bad state of health. Politics for me is not about position; it is about doing the right thing,” Obi said.

He criticised media sensationalism and insisted on a shift in focus: “In this country we talk about politics and abandon what we should be talking about. What we should be talking about is how we are going to educate the children.”

Obi’s remarks were in response to reports claiming he had agreed to run as Atiku’s running mate on the condition that the latter would serve only one term and put the agreement in writing.

Without confirming or denying such reports, Obi stressed his continued commitment to a cause, not a position.

“You can make the report what you want, but I’m in a coalition against bad governance, hunger, and poverty.”

DSS Arrests Another Kidnap Kingpin At Sokoto Airport While Going For Hajj

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday apprehended a suspected kidnap kingpin, Sani Galadi, at the Sultan Abubakar International Airport in Sokoto.

According to reliable sources, Galadi was nabbed at around 11:15 am during a screening process at the Hajj terminal.

Intelligence operatives had reportedly been monitoring his movements before swooping in to make the arrest just before his intended departure for Saudi Arabia.

This development follows closely on the heels of a similar operation in Abuja, where another suspected kidnap mastermind was intercepted at a Hajj camp less than 24 hours earlier.

That suspect had been declared wanted for his alleged role in a series of abductions in Kogi and Abuja.

Confirming the latest arrest, a senior security source said, “Yes, one Galadi was arrested today at the terminal when undergoing final screening before departure for the Saudi Arabi.”

When questioned about how Galadi was able to secure travel documents from various agencies despite his criminal background, the official declined to go into detail.

“You can find out that from those agencies,” he said.

The source further disclosed, “What I know is that, Galadi has been taken into custody and he’s providing necessary answers to questions. He will have his day in Court when the investigation is completed.”

Efforts to reach DSS officials for an official statement were unsuccessful as at the time of filing this report.

The rescue mission, which took place during an ongoing raid operation, was confirmed in a statement released on Monday evening by the spokesman of the Kogi State Police Command, SP William Aya.

US Govt To Pay $5 Million To Family Of Woman Killed In January 6 Capitol Riot

The Trump administration has reached a settlement to pay almost $5 million to the family of Ashli Babbitt, the 35-year-old Air Force veteran fatally shot by a Capitol Police officer during the January 6, 2021 attack on Congress, The Washington Post reported Monday.

Babbitt was killed as she attempted to climb through a smashed window into the House Speaker’s lobby while protesters tried to halt certification of the 2020 presidential election.

Her estate later filed a $30 million wrongful-death lawsuit.

According to two people familiar with the negotiations, the Justice Department, after reversing course once Donald Trump returned to the White House following his November 2024 victory, entered settlement talks that produced the nearly $5 million agreement, heading off a trial that had been on the docket for later this year.

Although the Capitol Police officer involved was cleared of wrongdoing, Trump has insisted the shooting was unnecessary, calling Babbitt an “innocent” woman.

Supporters have since portrayed her as a “martyr,” and the conservative legal group Judicial Watch represented her estate in the suit.

In a related move, Trump issued pardons on his first day back in office for more than 1,500 individuals charged in connection with the Capitol breach, which injured over 140 police officers.

The assault followed a rally near the White House where then-President Trump repeated false claims that he had won the 2020 election and urged supporters to march on the Capitol.

Speak Your Language To Your Children, Soyinka Urges African Parents

Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, during a visit to the University of Ilorin on Monday, emphasized the importance of cultural preservation by encouraging Africans to speak their native languages to their children.

His visit coincided with preparations for the university’s inaugural Culture Week, organized by the Centre for Cultural Studies and Creative Arts.

Speaking during a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor, Soyinka pledged to support and implement the Centre’s plans, noting that his life’s work has always centered on the arts and cultural heritage.

“My mission in Ilorin is to implement all the plans of the Centre for Cultural Studies and Creative Arts,” he stated.

He highlighted the cultural richness of Ilorin, comparing the city to Abu Dhabi, where he teaches as a Professor of Arts and Literature at New York University.

“Ilorin serves as a meeting point of cultures, making it a highly significant location for hosting an event that celebrates cultural diversity,” he said.

Drawing on his international academic experience, Soyinka observed that “Abu Dhabi thrives on the expression of unity through various cultural traditions,” and he likened Ilorin to a microcosm of the Emirate city, underscoring its potential as a global center for cultural dialogue.

He stressed the importance of indigenous languages in preserving African identity.

“Language is a repository of culture. Africans should allow their children to speak their language for the sustainability of their traditions,” he said in response to questions from journalists.

University of Ilorin’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole, SAN, described Soyinka’s visit as a proud and historic moment for the institution.

“The university does not take Professor Soyinka’s visit for granted,” he said, noting that the Centre for Cultural Studies was envisioned with cultural icons like Soyinka in mind.

Egbewole revealed that the Centre has grown into a full-fledged academic hub with programmes spanning diploma to doctoral levels, and expressed hope that it would evolve into a world-class institution with Soyinka’s involvement.

Professor Raymond Ogunade, Director of the Centre, expressed gratitude for Soyinka’s presence, calling it a “personal and professional fulfilment.”

According to Ogunade, involving Soyinka was a priority from the outset, given his global stature and contributions to the literary and cultural landscape.

The visit was attended by key university stakeholders, including council members, provosts, deans, staff of the Centre, and other members of the academic community, who gathered to welcome the iconic scholar and celebrate the institution’s cultural vision.

Global Support Grows For Pope Leo XIV’s Offer To Mediate Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks

Pope Leo XIV has invited Russian and Ukrainian negotiators to the Vatican for direct peace talks, a proposal that has quickly won broad international backing.

Diplomatic notes of support have arrived from the United Nations, the European Union, and several major governments, all praising the new pontiff’s initiative as a timely chance to end the protracted conflict.

Elected on May 8, 2025, Pope Leo XIV (formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost) is the first U.S.-born leader of the Catholic Church.

Known for his moderate stance and years of missionary work in Peru, the 267th pope is continuing the diplomatic outreach that marked Pope Francis’s tenure, but with a fresh mandate and heightened urgency.

Vatican officials say preliminary groundwork is under way to bring both sides to Rome for what could be the most substantive face-to-face negotiations since full-scale hostilities began.

While neither Moscow nor Kyiv has formally accepted the invitation, early signals from European and Latin American mediators suggest the offer is being taken seriously.

Analysts note that the Holy See’s neutrality and the new pope’s reputation for bridge-building give the proposal uncommon credibility.

If realized, the talks would represent the Vatican’s most significant diplomatic intervention in decades and could set the tone for Leo XIV’s papacy: one focused on peace-making and global dialogue.
