First Lady Donates N50 Million To Support 250 Elderly Persons In Enugu

Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, has provided N50 million to assist 250 elderly residents of Enugu State through her pet project, The Renewed Hope Initiative’s Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS).

Each of the 250 beneficiaries received N200,000 in the initiative, which took place in Enugu.

The program, themed “Total Wellness: Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous Lifestyle,” focused on enhancing the well-being and dignity of elderly citizens aged 65 and above.

Representing the First Lady at the event, the wife of Enugu State’s Governor, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, highlighted the importance of health and self-care, encouraging the elderly to eat well, stay hydrated, exercise, and cherish moments with their loved ones.

She also emphasized the significance of maintaining mental health by engaging in joyful activities and nurturing family connections.

Senator Tinubu expressed her commitment to ensuring that elderly Nigerians live their later years in comfort and dignity, stressing that while their needs may evolve, their desire for respect and compassion remains unchanged.

In addition, Mrs. Mbah announced that the Enugu State government, under Governor Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, would contribute an additional N50 million to the initiative, expanding its reach to more beneficiaries and reaffirming the importance of supporting the elderly.

During the event, Mrs. Mbah also distributed bags of rice to the elderly participants and thanked Senator Tinubu for initiating the program. She commended the RHIESS coordinators and partners for their contributions to the success of the scheme.

The event featured a comprehensive medical outreach, including free eye examinations, vital signs checks, malaria testing, common ailment diagnosis, and the distribution of free medications for treatment.

Opponents Of Tinubu’s Tax Reform Are Enemies Of Nigeria – Okupe

Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former presidential spokesman, has described opponents of the proposed Tax Reform Bills as enemies of Nigeria, asserting that the bills are designed to benefit the poor and foster national development.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, Okupe emphasized that no rational individual could oppose reforms intended to safeguard the poor and tackle corruption.

“Any right-thinking human being who has had the opportunity in these last two months or so to listen and to read what the tax reforms are all about and goes against it, is an enemy of the country,” Okupe said.

He further explained that the reforms aim to ensure that the poor are not overburdened by taxes, questioning how anyone could oppose a policy that exempts the poor.

“We are saying that majority of poor people should not pay tax, how can anybody be against that?” he asked.

The reforms, according to Okupe, also propose fairer tax structures for companies, saying they will no longer be taxed arbitrarily.

“These reform bills are saying that companies that are not making money cannot be taxed arbitrarily. Their taxation will be based on revenue that they have generated and profit that made, not on turnover.”

He also highlighted a key aspect of the reform, stating that companies with a turnover below 50 million are exempt from taxes, and questioned anyone who would oppose this.

“If your turnover is below 50 million, you are exempted, should anyone oppose this?” he said, stressing that passing these bills would help curb corruption in the country.

On the Northern opposition to the Tax Reform Bills before the National Assembly, Okupe dismissed their concerns as unjustifiable.

He pointed out that Nigeria’s reliance on oil revenue, rather than taxation, has been unsustainable.

“Nigeria’s democracy has been based on oil and not on taxation, which is not sustainable, hence the need for a reform,” he stated, arguing that taxes should be the primary source of revenue for any government.

“Go and look at all countries in the world, the major source of revenue for government is taxation, but we don’t consider tax as an issue because we just take the oil, and then look at what are we going to get in the next 12 months for budget,” he added.

Okupe also commended the efforts of the First Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), noting the strides it has made in revenue generation over the past year.

However, he expressed concern about Nigeria’s low tax-to-GDP ratio, which is among the lowest globally.

“Our tax to GDP ratio is one of the lowest in the world, and here is a country that requires immense amount of money and revenue for development,” he said, emphasizing that Nigeria’s large population and vast landmass necessitate a robust revenue generation system.

He further explained that the tax reforms are designed to ensure that those who are wealthy enough to afford taxes are the ones shouldering the burden, rather than the impoverished.

“There are young people who are making money, who go to clubs and spend N3million, N4 million and so on in a night. Those are the people that need to be taxed, not the man at the door earning N70,000 monthly,” Okupe said.

Okupe also criticized the concerns about the timing and speed of the bills, stating that issues causing significant economic damage require swift action.

“Whatever is causing economic and financial hemorrhage must be given the speed it requires,” he said, expressing confidence that the tax reforms would boost internally generated revenue for states and improve the living standards of citizens.

In conclusion, Okupe urged President Bola Tinubu to oversee all revenue-generating agencies to root out corruption and ensure that the nation benefits fully from the reforms.

He also called for the use of emerging technologies in agencies such as Customs, Immigration, Nigerian Communications Technology, Nigerian Port Authority (NPA), and NIMASA to effectively combat corruption.

“When these reforms that Bola Tinubu is introducing, when they come on-stream, corruption will go,” he added.

DAILY GAZETTE recalls that on October 3, President Tinubu requested the National Assembly to consider and pass the Tax Reform Bills, which include the Nigeria Tax Bill, Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.

Speaking during a presidential media chat on Monday, Tinubu reiterated that the reforms aim to “eliminate colonial-based assumptions” in Nigeria’s tax environment.

Sokoto Tragedy: Survivor Shares Heartbreaking Account Of Family’s Death In Airstrike

A survivor of the recent tragic airstrike in Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State has shared a chilling account of watching her family perish in the flames.

The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, spoke to BBC Hausa, describing the horrifying moment when she saw her father, mother, and four younger siblings consumed by the inferno caused by the attack.

Through tearful words, she recounted, “I saw them burning, my mother, my father, and my three younger brothers.”

The airstrike, reportedly launched by a Nigerian military warplane, took place on Tuesday morning and was aimed at suspected insurgents.

However, the attack tragically resulted in the deaths of 10 civilians, with six others left injured, alongside the loss of around 100 animals, including camels, cattle, sheep, and donkeys.

Usman Manuga, a local resident, described the events leading up to the devastation: “After the Fajr (early morning) prayer, we saw planes flying overhead. Shortly after, bombs dropped, and everything went up in flames.”

During the victims’ funeral on Wednesday evening, Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu expressed sorrow over the incident, calling it an unfortunate mistake.

He explained, “This situation was destined to happen. The officials acted with the intention of protecting the community. We will ensure a thorough investigation is conducted to prevent such incidents in the future.”

To support the grieving families, the governor announced 100 bags of food supplies and ₦20 million in relief funds.

Abubakar Muhammad, Chairman of Silame Local Government, confirmed the attack and revealed that two warplanes were involved, targeting the villages of Gidan Bisa and Runtuwa.

He noted that the assault was intense and only ended after the intervention of the state government, which coordinated with both the Air Force and ground forces to halt the operation.

The villages affected by the attack are situated near the Surame desert, which is believed to be a stronghold for Lakurawa insurgents.

This tragedy marks the ninth incident of accidental military airstrikes on civilians in Nigeria in recent years, following other such tragedies, including the December 3, 2023 drone strike in Kaduna that killed 85 worshippers and the January 2017 military strike on a refugee camp in Borno State.

Governor Aliyu assured the community that a full investigation is underway to prevent further incidents like this.

The survivor, along with other affected residents, is left to mourn the devastating loss of their loved ones while hoping for better safeguards to protect civilians during military operations.

UniAbuja Refutes Allegations Of Bias In VC Selection Process

The University of Abuja has dismissed claims of bias and irregularities in the ongoing selection process for the new Vice Chancellor.

The clarification comes after protests from senior professors on Tuesday, who criticized what they called a “flawed” process for appointing the new VC.

The university has faced tension following the departure of its former VC, Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, who stepped down on July 1.

Prior to his exit, Na’Allah initiated the process to select his successor. In the interim, Prof. Aisha Maikudi, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academics, was appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor.

However, her appointment has sparked controversy, with some stakeholders questioning her qualifications, arguing she lacks the required years of experience as a professor for the role.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Habib Yakoob, the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, rejected the allegations, stating that Maikudi is fully qualified for the role and has proven her competence as Acting VC over the last six months.

The university emphasized that the selection process is being conducted in accordance with established regulations, ensuring transparency and fairness.

The statement read, “These reports, which claim that Professor Maikudi is being unfairly favored, as well as accusations of journalist harassment and protests by certain professors, are misleading and exaggerated. Her leadership during this period has received commendation from within and outside the university community.”

The university further emphasized that the selection process is being managed by the University Council, which is committed to conducting a merit-based and transparent procedure in line with the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and other relevant statutes.

Addressing the protests, Yakoob stated that while a meeting had been planned to discuss the conduct of two Senate members who walked out of the Joint Council/Senate Selection Board meeting, it was postponed to seek alternative solutions.

Regarding claims of a Channels Television journalist being harassed, Yakoob clarified that the incident resulted from a misunderstanding regarding the journalist’s identity and presence on campus.

He explained that the journalist’s vehicle was temporarily immobilized to prevent unauthorized departure, but that no assault or detention took place.

The university reiterated its commitment to fostering positive relations with the media and ensuring the safety of all individuals on campus.

It urged stakeholders to allow the VC selection process to proceed without disruption, ensuring that the final decision serves the best interests of the institution.
