Law Firm Drops Abuja Bolt Driver As Client After Apology To APGA Rep Member

The law firm of Deji Adeyanju & Partners has severed its legal relationship with Stephen Abuwatseye, an Abuja-based e-hailing driver, following his public apology to Alex Ikwechegh, the controversial House of Representatives member for Aba North and South, who had assaulted him.

The decision comes in the wake of a viral video that showed Ikwechegh physically assaulting Abuwatseye, a Bolt driver, during an altercation. In the footage, Ikwechegh can be heard boasting about his power, even threatening to make Abuwatseye “disappear.”

The incident sparked a widespread public outcry, with many Nigerians calling for Ikwechegh’s removal from office.

Ikwechegh, after facing public backlash, later apologized, acknowledging that his actions were not in line with the expected conduct of a public official.

However, the apology was met with mixed reactions, with some feeling it was insufficient given the severity of his behavior.

The matter escalated when Abuwatseye, despite being the victim, issued his own apology to Ikwechegh, which many viewed as an attempt to downplay the gravity of the assault.

In a video shared on Thursday, Abuwatseye expressed regret for his role in provoking Ikwechegh, stating: “I want to apologize to him for whatever I must have said or done to provoke him to that level of anger.”

Abuwatseye’s apology quickly garnered criticism, as many felt it undermined efforts to hold Ikwechegh accountable for his actions.

The situation became even more contentious when Abuwatseye urged Nigerians to “forgive and forget,” invoking a religious sentiment: “For there is no justice without forgiveness.”

In response to the development, Abuwatseye’s legal team, led by Deji Adeyanju & Partners, issued a statement announcing their withdrawal from the case.

The law firm explained that Abuwatseye’s recent actions, including the apology, compromised their ethical standards.

“After careful consideration, we have made the decision to withdraw our legal representation in order to protect our professional integrity and maintain the highest ethical standard in the legal profession,” the statement read.

The firm, however, expressed good wishes for Abuwatseye, while reaffirming its commitment to fighting for the rights of marginalized individuals.

“We wish Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye the very best, while we assure the general public of our continuous commitment towards protecting the rights of the oppressed and indigent members of society,” the statement concluded.

In the meantime, Ikwechegh faces legal charges, including abuse of office, assault, and threats to life.

He was granted bail by a Chief Magistrate Court in Kuje, Abuja, but the case is still ongoing, with the next court date scheduled for November 8.

FG Announces Free Cesarean Sections For Vulnerable Women

The Federal Ministry of Health has unveiled a new initiative aimed at offering free cesarean sections to poor and vulnerable women across Nigeria.

The initiative, called the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII), was launched at the Joint Annual Health Review (JAR) event held in Abuja.

Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, described the program as a bold step toward reducing both maternal and newborn mortality rates in the country.

He emphasized that the initiative would focus on addressing the high rates of maternal deaths, particularly in areas with the greatest need.

A key aspect of the MAMII program, according to Prof. Pate, is its broad coverage, which includes services offered by both public and private healthcare facilities approved by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

The goal is to ensure that women in underserved regions have access to safe and timely cesarean sections when needed, significantly reducing the risk of maternal mortality.

The minister also highlighted the stark challenge of maternal mortality in Nigeria, noting that 172 local government areas account for more than half of the country’s maternal deaths.

To combat this, MAMII will direct resources to these high-burden areas, prioritizing support where it’s needed most.

Prof. Pate further explained that the NHIA, in partnership with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and State Health Insurance Agencies (SHIAs), will manage the reimbursement system, ensuring that healthcare providers can sustainably deliver cesarean section services under the scheme.

In addition, the minister stressed the importance of community health workers in achieving the program’s goals, noting that this aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s plan to recruit 120,000 additional health workers to strengthen primary healthcare across the country.

Obi Donates N60 Million To Anambra University, Nursing School

Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, has donated N60 million to support education and healthcare in Anambra State.

On Thursday, Obi presented a donation of N50 million to the University on the Niger (UNINIGER) in Umunya, located in the Iyi-Enu campus in Idemili North Local Government Area, to aid infrastructure development at the institution’s take-off campus.

In addition, Obi donated N10 million to the School of Nursing at Iyienu Mission Hospital, Ogidi.

During his visit to the university and nursing school, Obi emphasized that his financial contributions were investments in vital sectors like education, healthcare, and poverty reduction, which are critical for sustainable development.

“Our health and education systems have faced long-term neglect, resulting in severe challenges that affect the nation’s progress,” Obi remarked, stressing that the solutions lie in strategic investments.

Obi also highlighted the dire shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly doctors and nurses, in the country.

He called for more investment in training medical personnel. “We have a shortage of doctors and nurses, far below the World Health Organization’s recommendations. We must focus on improving the training of healthcare workers to address this challenge.”

The former governor of Anambra, whose administration made significant strides in education and healthcare, also encouraged the students at the institutions to value both academic excellence and strong moral character.

“The value of your qualifications lies not just in your academic performance but also in your integrity and character,” he told them.

Bishop Owen Nwokolo, Anglican Bishop on the Niger, expressed his gratitude to Obi for his continuous support of education in the state, recalling how Obi’s intervention revitalized the education sector by returning schools to the Church and ensuring they thrived.

Bishop Nwokolo also noted that Iyienu School of Nursing was one of the first beneficiaries of Obi’s support, receiving accreditation during his tenure as governor, and has continued to receive backing from him ever since.

Prof. Chinedu Osita Nebo, Vice Chancellor of the University on the Niger, praised Obi for his consistent commitment to education, which he said has significantly influenced the South-East region.

He credited Obi with helping raise awareness about the importance of education in the Eastern states, contributing to their improved academic performance nationwide.

A medical student at the university, Mr. Ikenna Offor, expressed his appreciation for Obi’s efforts, sharing how Obi’s past support had led to the development of key infrastructure, including hostels, staff quarters, a theater complex, classrooms, and emergency facilities at the school.

Offor thanked Obi for his generosity and support, hoping that his visits would continue.

Obi was accompanied by several dignitaries, including Professor Stella Okunna and other prominent figures, who joined in acknowledging his contributions to the development of education and healthcare in the state.

How My Late Wife Secured My Release From Prison – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has opened up about his time in prison and the pivotal role his late wife, Stella, played in securing his release during the military regime of General Sani Abacha.

Speaking at the inauguration of the 250-bed Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin, the Edo State capital, Obasanjo, now 87, fondly recalled how his wife worked tirelessly on his behalf.

He was arrested and jailed by the Abacha government in 1995, accused of being involved in an alleged coup plot, though he consistently maintained his innocence.

After Abacha’s death, Obasanjo was released by the regime of General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who later became president.

“My late wife went everywhere to ensure that I came out of prison alive. She was in Vatican City, France, and other parts of the world. No amount of honour would be too much for the role she played. I had it all coming out of prison.”

Obasanjo expressed deep gratitude for his wife’s unrelenting efforts, adding, “We were planning for her 68th birthday anniversary but never had it before she died. It was very painful for me in particular and for all of us in my family.”

Reflecting on his wife’s passing, which occurred during his second term as president, Obasanjo noted how much he valued the contributions she made to his public life.

“I had a woman who made tremendous contributions to my achievements in public life,” he said.

The former president also took the opportunity to thank the government and people of Edo State for honouring his late wife with the naming of the hospital, noting that her sacrifices would never be forgotten.

Obasanjo praised the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki for its achievements, particularly the completion of the Stella Obasanjo Hospital.

He described the facility as “first-class treatment for any ailment,” commending Obaseki for “starting well and finishing well. With this kind of edifice, I can say that the governor started well and is finishing well.”

In his remarks, Obasanjo also reflected on his past relationship with former Governor John Oyegun, who had worked closely with him during his tenure as president.

“I have worked in the past with the likes of John Oyegun. He was a fantastic permanent secretary,” Obasanjo said, recalling some of their shared experiences. He also expressed his admiration for the current governor.

“More grace to the elbows of the governor. With this hospital, you’re assured of first-class treatment for any ailment.”

NNPP Crisis: Gov. Yusuf Reaffirms Strong Bond With Kwankwaso, Slams “Stand on Your Own” Faction

Governor Yusuf and Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has dismissed rumours of a rift with his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, affirming that their relationship remains strong and grounded in mutual respect.

During a meeting with journalists on Wednesday, Governor Yusuf addressed growing speculation within the Kwankwasiyya movement and the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) about a supposed falling-out between him and Kwankwaso.

These rumours suggest that Kwankwaso is exerting excessive influence over Yusuf’s administration, with critics even alleging that the senator is effectively serving a “third term by proxy.”

Yusuf refuted these claims, emphasizing the enduring strength of his alliance with Kwankwaso.

“There is no truth in the rumours of a misunderstanding between us. In my 40 years of knowing him, tell me, who among politicians has stayed with someone this long and still maintained harmony?” he asked.

The rumours of discord gained momentum following comments from Aliyu Sani Madakin-Gini, the House of Representatives member representing Dala Federal Constituency, who recently parted ways with Kwankwaso.

Madakin-Gini alleged that the disagreement stemmed from issues related to a drugs contract and the state scholarship scheme.

However, Governor Yusuf rejected these allegations, asserting his independence while acknowledging the significant role Kwankwaso has played in his political journey.

“To now suggest that I am somehow chained by Kwankwaso is simply unfair. Even just two days ago, I visited him and told him about these rumours. I said, ‘I am surprised. Do people expect me to insult the man who stood by me?’”

Amidst the growing speculation, a faction within the NNPP, calling itself “Abba Tsaya da Kafarka” (meaning “Abba, stand on your own”), has been urging Yusuf to distance himself from Kwankwaso and make decisions independently. Yusuf strongly criticized this faction, calling their position insulting.

“This ‘stand on your own’ slogan is the greatest insult I have faced as governor. It implies that I should repay good with bad. What has Kwankwaso done to me to deserve this? All the good we are doing for the people is overlooked, and instead, they promote this divisive rhetoric.”

In response to the internal party tensions, the NNPP’s state leadership suspended Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, Secretary to the State Government, and Muhammad Diggol, Commissioner of Transportation, accusing them of supporting the “Abba Tsaya da Kafarka” campaign.

Both officials have denied the allegations.

“It’s as if people do not understand the role Kwankwaso has played. Where were these critics when he was laying the foundation for what we are doing now?” Yusuf questioned.

The governor also expressed frustration with media reports claiming he had ignored multiple calls from Kwankwaso.

“They said Kwankwaso called me more than 30 times, and I refused to answer. Where did they get this from?. If not for my respect for journalists, I would have taken the person who wrote that to court. But I know, and Kwankwaso knows, that it’s all lies. There is no rift.”

Finally, Yusuf appealed to his supporters to reject divisive rhetoric and emphasized the need for unity within the party.

“As of today, I don’t want to hear ‘stand on your own’ in Kano State or anywhere in Nigeria. We were raised to respect elders, not to insult them.”

Anambra 2025: Why Bianca Ojukwu’s Appointment Won’t Affect APGA’s Chances In The Polls – Commissioner

Anambra State’s Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, has emphasized that Bianca Ojukwu’s appointment as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs will not negatively impact the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) or its political influence in the state.

Speaking in an interview with Rudolf Okonkwo on 90MinutesAfrica, Mefor explained that President Bola Tinubu’s decision to appoint Ojukwu, a prominent member of APGA, was a strategic move aimed at strengthening the South-East’s representation in the federal government.

Ojukwu, who was appointed to the ministerial position on October 23, 2024, is a well-known figure in the APGA party and her appointment sparked discussions both within Nigeria and internationally.

Mefor, however, assured that her new role would not disrupt the political dynamics of APGA in Anambra.

“President Tinubu’s selection of Bianca Ojukwu is part of his efforts to build a stronger relationship with the South-East region. It’s a strategic choice that reflects his desire to engage the region more effectively.”

He also pointed out that the political landscape in Anambra State remains firmly rooted in local dynamics.

“Election is local, and Anambra voters are sophisticated. They can differentiate between the various levels of elections — Senate, House of Representatives, Governor, and President. So, when the time comes, voters will make their decisions based on the issues and candidates, without confusion,” Mefor added.

He reassured party supporters that APGA’s influence in the state would remain intact, as local elections are distinct from national appointments.

Anambra First Lady Donates Relief Materials To Flood Victims In IDP Camp

The First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Nonye Soludo, visited displaced persons at the Central School, Odekpe in Ogbaru Local Government Area on Wednesday, offering relief materials to support those affected by the recent flooding.

The flood, caused by rising water levels in the River Niger, has impacted communities in five local government areas: Anambra West, Anambra East, Ogbaru, Awka North, and Ayamelum.

The state government has set up over 27 temporary shelters, known as Holden camps, where displaced persons are currently seeking refuge.

During her visit to the Odekpe camp, Dr. Soludo reassured the residents that the government would continue to provide support to meet their needs during this challenging time.

“I encourage you to see this as a moment to explore the strength of your community. The state government will ensure continuous assistance to guarantee your wellbeing.”

The First Lady also called on individuals and organizations to contribute to the relief efforts and provide further support to those in the camps.

She highlighted the importance of maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in the camps, as unsanitary conditions can lead to disease outbreaks.

“I urge volunteers at the camps to maintain the highest standards of hygiene and environmental cleanliness. We must take precautions to prevent the spread of diseases in these conditions,” she said.

Dr. Soludo also took the opportunity to assess the living conditions within the camp, focusing on hygiene, dietary needs, and overall sanitary standards.

Her visit allowed her to interact directly with the displaced individuals and emphasize the state’s commitment to their welfare.

In addition to Dr. Soludo’s visit, Dr. Chukwumuanya Igboekwu, the South East Zonal Coordinator for the World Health Organization (WHO), announced that the WHO would be deploying a mobile clinic to the camps, providing medical care and essential medicines to the residents.

The First Lady donated food items, sanitary products, beverages, and cash to the four Holden camps in Ogbaru Local Government Area, ensuring that the displaced individuals received immediate relief.

Court Strikes Out Suit Challenging Cross River Labour Party Leadership

Cross River State High Court sitting in Calabar has struck out a suit filed by Comrade John O. Ushie against the Labour Party State Working Committee, led by Patriarch Ogar Osim.

The suit, numbered HC/226/2024, was initially filed in early October 2024, with Ushie claiming to be the interim leader of the Labour Party in Cross River State and seeking a court order to restrain Patriarch Ogar Osim and his team from performing their duties.

However, following the filing of a Counter Affidavit by Osim’s legal team, the applicant, John Ushie, decided to withdraw the suit.

In a formal application submitted to the court on November 7, 2024, Ushie sought to discontinue the case, which was subsequently struck out by the court.

Patriarch Ogar Osim, the leader of the Labour Party’s State Working Committee, responded to the court’s ruling with a message of forgiveness.

He expressed his willingness to move beyond the legal dispute and focus on reconciliation.

“I have forgiven them and look forward to a reconciliation process that will strengthen our party and ensure we build a formidable political platform capable of delivering the true dividends of democracy to the people,” Osim said.
