Ekpa To Spend Christmas In Detention As Finnish Law Does Not Permit Bail; Followers Declare Biafra Republic In Finland

Pro-Biafran activist Simon Ekpa, who was recently arrested in Finland on charges related to terrorism, will spend Christmas in detention as Finnish law does not allow for bail in such cases.

Mikko Laaksonen, a Senior Detective Superintendent at Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation, confirmed this on Saturday via an email.

Ekpa’s arrest has sparked tensions, and his supporters have taken a dramatic step by declaring the establishment of the United States of Biafra during a conference held in Finland.

Ekpa was arrested alongside four other individuals last week, with the Finnish authorities accusing them of engaging in terror-related activities, including incitement to violence and financing terrorism.

The Finnish police described Ekpa as the self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile and stated that he used social media to incite violence in Nigeria’s South-East region, targeting both civilians and authorities.

Local media in Finland reported that Ekpa was remanded in custody by the Päijät-Häme District Court, facing charges of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.

The Finnish Central Criminal Police confirmed the arrest of Ekpa and others, with the investigation continuing into the alleged funding of terrorist activities.

In response to questions about bail, Laaksonen explained that Finnish criminal procedure does not recognize bail. Instead, suspects are either remanded in custody or placed under travel bans depending on the specifics of the case.

Meanwhile, Ekpa’s supporters gathered in Lahti, Finland, on Friday to declare the formation of the United States of Biafra.

The event, known as the ‘Biafra Mass Exodus 2024,’ saw a significant number of Nigerians arrive in Finland in support of Ekpa’s cause. In an online post, one of the attendees, @DOlewunne, described the moment as a “historic independent moment,” declaring, “We are a Nation !”

Dr. Ngozi Orabueze, a self-identified Chief of Staff of the United States of Biafra, organized the convention.

Orabueze, who has been active in the Biafran separatist movement, was appointed by Ekpa in March 2023 as the Minister of Health, Oil, and Gas in the Biafra Republic Government-in-Exile.

During the event, Orabueze announced that Biafrans in Finland had declared their independence, introducing a new currency, Biafra coins, and establishing “Biafra time.”

Before the declaration, a video message from Ekpa was shown to attendees.

In the video, Ekpa criticized Nigeria’s colonial past and expressed frustration with the country’s treatment of the South-East region.

“We were free before Lord Lugard came. If you want the oil, take it and leave us alone,” he said, ending with a chant of “USB, USB, USB,” referring to the United States of Biafra.

Orabueze, after taking an oath of office, listed several Nigerian states as part of the newly re-declared United States of Biafra, including Anambra, Okigwe, Nnewi, Ogoni, and others.

The crowd cheered in support as they sang an Igbo song, expressing their commitment to the cause.

Despite the fervor of the event, both the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) distanced themselves from the declaration.

Emma Powerful, a spokesperson for IPOB, criticized Ekpa’s faction for their unlawful activities, denying any involvement in the declaration.

MASSOB’s spokesperson, Sunday Edeson, expressed conditional support for the Biafran independence movement but noted that declaring independence in Finland did not equate to freedom from Nigeria, as the region was still under Nigerian governance.

In response to calls for Ekpa’s extradition, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that there is no extradition agreement with Finland.

However, a spokesperson for the Finnish Embassy in Nigeria declined to comment on the matter.

Some Nigerians, including legal experts, have argued that although Finland and Nigeria lack a bilateral extradition agreement, Ekpa could be tried in either country based on international legal conventions.

Ekpa will remain in custody, awaiting a trial scheduled for May 2025.

Enugu Govt Cracks Down On Illegal Lottery Operators, Begins License Revalidation

The Enugu State Gaming Commission has launched a license revalidation exercise to combat the activities of illegal lottery operators and restore integrity to the state’s gaming and lottery sector.

This move follows calls from industry stakeholders for improved regulation to eliminate fraud and increase public trust in the sector.

Speaking at a one-day Gaming Stakeholders Engagement Forum in Enugu, the Executive Secretary of the Commission, Prince Arinze Arum, explained that the revalidation exercise is aimed at addressing regulatory gaps and reinforcing the system.

He also announced a temporary suspension of new licenses to ensure that existing operators comply with the required standards.

“We are halting all new license issuances and revalidations temporarily. This is to ensure fairness, uphold integrity, and demonstrate a zero-tolerance approach to illegal operators in the state,” Arum said.

Arum further assured that the commission is working towards establishing a sustainable and transparent environment for regulated gaming, with the use of advanced technology for monitoring, enforcement, and management.

These efforts, he noted, will improve efficiency and accountability across the sector.

“State-of-the-art technology is being deployed to monitor all gaming and lottery activities, ensuring uniformity and transparency,” he said

The commission also engaged stakeholders to identify weaknesses, improve processes, and eliminate unlicensed operators.

The focus is on tightening regulatory gaps, enhancing data collection, and addressing the activities of illegal operators.

Participants at the forum unanimously agreed on the need to adopt global best practices to foster the sector’s growth.

They emphasized that the gaming industry, with its potential to generate substantial revenue, could significantly boost the state’s economy and create employment opportunities for the youth.

Mr. Arinze Okeani, a representative from BetKing Lotto, praised the state government for revitalizing the Gaming and Lottery Commission but called for stronger regulations to curb exploitation by fraudulent operators.

“The commission should implement effective strategies to harmonize operations and identify rogue operators. Those found guilty must face prosecution to serve as a deterrent,” Okeani said.

Similarly, Darlington Umezurike of Premier Lotto highlighted the importance of promptly honoring winning claims to maintain public trust.

“Trust and reliability are the foundation of the gaming industry. It’s vital that all stakeholders ensure winnings are paid out promptly to build confidence and sustain growth,” Umezurike stated.

Through these efforts, Enugu State Government aims to transform the gaming and lottery sector into a model of fairness, transparency, and economic growth.

Why Tax Reform Bill Is Against The North – Gov. Zulum

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has raised concerns over the proposed tax reform bills, criticizing the rapid pace at which they are advancing in the legislature.

In an interview with BBC Hausa, Governor Zulum expressed fears that the bills could have severe repercussions for the northern region and other parts of the country.

He expressed unease over the swift legislative process, asking, “Why the rush?”

He compared the speed of the tax reform bills’ passage to the prolonged 20-year journey of the Petroleum Industry Bill, noting that such important legislation should be treated with more caution and careful consideration to avoid negative long-term effects.

“The Petroleum Industry Bill took almost 20 years to pass, but these tax bills are being pushed through within a week. They must be handled thoughtfully so that future generations, including our children, will benefit,” Zulum said.

The governor opposed the bills, warning that they would set back the northern region and negatively impact other areas, including the South East, South West, and some southwestern states such as Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo.

Governor Zulum called on President Tinubu to reconsider the bills, asserting that his opposition does not equate to opposition to the government itself.

He said, “These bills, as they are currently framed, would devastate the North. We urge President Tinubu to review them. He won 60% of his votes from the North, and we ask him to listen to our concerns. What we want is the withdrawal of these bills.”

He further warned that if the bills are passed, the financial stability of northern states could be jeopardized, stating, “We may not even be able to pay salaries, and if we do, it won’t be sustainable in the following years.”

Zulum reaffirmed his opposition to the bills, pointing out that even Lagos State is against them.

“If this bill is harming regional progress, why shouldn’t it be reconsidered?” he said.

He also noted that several National Assembly members, including some from the South, are not in favor of the bills.

The governor concluded by emphasizing that his stance is not against President Tinubu or the government but rather an effort to protect the interests of the northern region and other affected states.

“We supported and voted for President Tinubu, but these tax bills, in their current form, will not benefit us,” he said.

Panic In Abia Community As Gunmen Kill Two

Residents of Umuchima community in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State are living in fear after an early morning attack by unidentified gunmen on Friday.

The assault has left two people dead and caused widespread panic, with many fleeing their homes for safety.

Unverified reports suggest that the gunmen targeted a man named Osama, accusing him of informing the Nigerian Army about their activities.

The army had conducted a raid in the area earlier this week, which may have prompted the attack.

The second victim, identified as the local vigilante commander, was also killed during the assault. His name has not been confirmed at this time.

The attack has led to widespread chaos, with residents abandoning their homes in fear of further violence.

Many are now seeking refuge in neighboring towns, worried about potential retaliation either from the assailants or security forces.

This attack comes on the heels of a military operation earlier in the week when Nigerian Army forces raided a suspected hideout of the gunmen in Umuchima.

The army, operating under the 14 Brigade Army Headquarters at Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Barracks in Ohafia, engaged the gunmen—alleged members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)—in a gun battle.

The army successfully repelled the gunmen, who were forced to flee, leaving behind motorcycles and other equipment.

Despite the raid, there has been no official statement from the Abia State government or the Nigerian Army regarding the attack on Friday, and the community remains on edge, anticipating more violence.

“We are grateful to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his continued support of science and technology in Nigeria,” Nnaji said, noting that the government is committed to securing the country’s space activities in line with global standards.

The minister further explained that Nigeria’s space program has immense economic potential, particularly through satellite-based monitoring of maritime activities.

Satellite technology can provide crucial surveillance of the country’s waterways, generating significant revenue, especially through the tracking of ships.

Dr. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, the Director General of NARSDA, shared that the agency has made significant breakthroughs in research.

However, he emphasized the ongoing challenge of transforming these advancements into tangible products and services that will benefit the economy and enhance national security.

Investigative Journalist, Fisayo Soyombo Freed After 3 Days In Army Custody

Fisayo Soyombo, founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), has been released by the Nigerian Army after spending three days in detention.

Soyombo was arrested by the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, under the claim that he was involved in “illegal oil bunkering” at a site the military described as such.

The FIJ confirmed Soyombo’s release on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating, “We can confirm that our founder, @fisayosoyombo, has now been released by @HQNigerianArmy, following the intense media campaign you all mounted.”

The FIJ rejected the Army’s allegations, calling them a distortion of Soyombo’s investigative work. “FIJ acknowledges the Nigerian Army’s deliberate mischaracterisation to suggest an involvement in ‘illegal oil bunkering.’ FIJ will also address this statement appropriately,” the organization said.

The media group also expressed concern about Soyombo’s safety, given the sensitive information he reportedly shared with the Army during his detention.

“Our immediate concern is regarding the safety of Fisayo Soyombo in light of extensive information sharing with the Army on his fieldwork during the period of his detention. We are assessing the situation and hoping that his safety will not be jeopardised after release,” FIJ added.

Lagos Task Force Fires Two Officers For Theft During Raid

The Lagos State Task Force has dismissed two of its officers, Fatai Yusuf, 42, and Hammed Garuba, 38, for stealing during a recent raid at a hotel in Gowon Estate, known for its links to drug trafficking and use.

In a statement released on Friday, the task force’s spokesperson, Mr. Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, revealed that the two officers were caught on CCTV stealing mobile phones during the operation, which led to several arrests.

Gbadeyan explained that the integrity of the raid was severely compromised by the officers’ actions, and after a thorough investigation by the agency’s disciplinary committee, both men were found guilty of theft.

They have been dismissed from the force and will face legal charges.

The chairman of the agency, CSP Adetayo Akerele, condemned the officers’ behavior, emphasizing the task force’s commitment to upholding integrity and accountability within its ranks.

“Any breach of ethical conduct will result in severe consequences,” Akerele warned, reinforcing the agency’s zero-tolerance policy for misconduct.

Gbadeyan also reiterated the task force’s dedication to maintaining public trust through fairness and justice, stressing that unethical actions that tarnish the agency’s reputation would be dealt with swiftly.

In a related development, those arrested during the raid have been arraigned in court. The first group of 53 individuals arrested for drug-related offenses has been remanded in the Badagry Correctional Centre.

A subsequent raid in the Gowon Estate and Ipaja areas led to the arrest of 43 more suspects, and the demolition of drug dens and shanties to prevent further criminal activities.

“The operations demonstrate the task force’s unwavering commitment to fighting drug-related crime and ensuring public safety,” Gbadeyan concluded.

IGP Opposes Bill To Remove Police From Pension Scheme

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed strong opposition to the bill proposing the removal of the police from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

Speaking to police officers in Abuja, Egbetokun warned that exiting the scheme would not benefit the police force.

He pointed out that if the police were to leave the CPS, they would regress to a system where their pensions would be dependent on political decisions and annual budget allocations, rather than a structured pension scheme.

He explained, “If we exit the current CPS, we are going back to square one, where pensions will be in the hands of politicians and subject to yearly budget constraints. When the government lacks funds, pensions will not be paid, and you will have to wait months, just like the retirees of the past.”

Egbetokun emphasized the importance of understanding the full details of the bill before calling for a change, urging police officers to consider where they would be going if they exited the scheme.

He said, “You must know where you’re going before shouting ‘I want to go’.”

As an alternative, Egbetokun revealed that he is working on a new pension system that would allow police officers to retire with their full salary as their monthly pension, ensuring better financial security for retirees.

“Let us be careful not to move from the frying pan to the fire. I care about your welfare, and I will continue fighting for the best pension for our police officers in retirement.”
