27 Judges Face NJC Investigation Panels Over Alleged Judicial Misconduct, Rascality

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has constituted four investigative panels to probe 27 High Court judges accused of various acts of judicial misconduct.

The council, which is chaired by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, also issued a stern warning to Justice O. M. Olagunju of the Oyo State High Court for the inappropriate language used in a letter directed to the CJN.

Advertorial

The letter challenged the Council’s decision and policy regarding the appointment of the President of the Customary Court of Appeal in Oyo State.

In a statement released by the NJC’s Director of Information, Mr. Soji Oye, it was disclosed that the council, during its 106th meeting, reviewed the report from its Preliminary Complaints Assessment Committee.

The report pertained to 22 petitions filed against the 27 judges from both Federal and State High Courts.

Advertorial

Following the review, the Council found the allegations in some of the petitions to be credible and consequently established four committees to thoroughly investigate the cases.

However, the NJC dismissed 18 other petitions due to lack of merit, abandonment, or because they were deemed sub judice.

Among the dismissed petitions were those against Hon. Justice Monica B. Dongban-Mensem, President of the Court of Appeal, and several other Justices from both the Court of Appeal and Federal High Court, including Hon. Justice John Tsoho, Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, and Hon. Justice Okon E. Abang.

Advertorial

Additionally, five judges have been placed on the NJC’s pre-sanction Watch List Register due to poor performance.

The NJC indicated that these judges could face sanctions if their performance does not improve.

As this was the final meeting presided over by the outgoing CJN, Justice Ariwoola, before his retirement, he expressed his gratitude to the Council members and the Secretariat for their support.

Advertorial

In return, the members praised the outgoing CJN and wished him good health in his retirement.

Gunmen Disrupt Anambra Ozo Title Ceremony, Eight Kidnapped, Twelve Injured

An Ozo title ceremony in Amakor village, Nanka Community of Orumba North Local Government Area, Anambra State, turned violent when gunmen stormed the event, kidnapping eight people and leaving twelve others injured.

The attack occurred during the initiation ceremony of several individuals into the Ozo society.

Advertorial

Barrister Emmanuel Ilo, one of the Ozo titleholders present, described the incident as a chaotic and terrifying experience.

“I narrowly escaped with my life when the gunmen attacked,” Ilo recounted, attributing his escape to divine intervention.

According to Ilo, the policemen stationed at the event tried to fend off the attackers but were quickly overwhelmed.

Advertorial

The gunmen, some allegedly dressed in police uniforms, began assaulting the participants and organizers without any prior warning or explanation.

They caused widespread panic, destroying the setup at the venue and brutally beating several attendees.

After the violent assault, the gunmen abducted eight people, including the Amakor village Chairman, Barrister Obinna Ilo, along with other prominent community members such as Emerie Ilo, Sam Eminike, and Chief Asina Okafor.

Advertorial

The victims were forced into waiting Sienna vehicles and driven to an unknown location. Several other attendees managed to flee and have since gone into hiding.

The families of the kidnapped individuals remain in a state of distress, as no contact has been made, and the abductees’ phone lines have been switched off.

The identities and motives of the abductors remain unclear, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the incident.

Advertorial

The attack occurred just as the ceremony was reaching its peak, with Mr. Peter Emerie Ilo and Chike Ilo, brothers of Barrister Obinna Ilo, along with Madueke Nwafor, being initiated into the Ozo society.

The attackers, some of whom had their faces covered, were reportedly accompanied by community members, including former village Chairman Mr. Chinedu Nwankwo and Caretaker Committee Chairman Mr. Ejike Nwafor.

Advertorial

When contacted, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, stated that he was not aware of the incident.

Addressing allegations that some of the assailants were dressed in police uniforms, Tochukwu clarified, “Police do not kidnap or abduct. If these individuals were arrested, the police would have notified their families and allowed them to make calls. We do not operate in that manner.”

Confusion As PDP Delegates Beat Council Chairman Into Coma During Party Primaries

A tense situation unfolded in Jos, Plateau State, where Hon. Christopher Audu, the Transition Implementation Committee (TIC) Chairman of Qua’an Pan Local Government Area, was brutally assaulted by delegates during a primary election.

The incident, which took place on Thursday, escalated after Audu was declared the winner of the election.

Advertorial

According to eyewitnesses, the election initially proceeded peacefully, but tensions flared when some delegates and PDP members, who had been barred from entering the hall, forced their way in.

The group accused Audu of manipulating the process by selecting his loyalists as delegates while preventing genuine delegates from participating.

In a fit of anger, the mob attacked Hon. Audu, severely beating him.

Advertorial

The TIC Chairman sustained significant injuries and was immediately rushed from Ba’ap, the headquarters of Qua’an Pan LGA, to an undisclosed location for urgent medical care.

IPAC Rejects Anambra Electoral Law, Threatens Legal Action

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has condemned the new electoral law introduced by the Anambra State government, labeling it a direct assault on Nigeria’s democratic values.

In a statement issued on Friday by its National Chairman, Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, IPAC vowed to resist the law, which they claim undermines the Constitution and the Electoral Act of 2022.

Advertorial

The council highlighted that the law was hurriedly passed by the Anambra State House of Assembly in a single day, just ahead of the upcoming September 28 Local Government elections.

IPAC argues that this rushed process is a clear attempt to manipulate the electoral framework to favor certain political interests.

Dantalle criticized the law as a “retrogressive and anti-democratic” move that exemplifies “legislative recklessness” and a “deliberate assault on the rule of law.”

Advertorial

IPAC asserted that the law is designed to centralize power within the state, contradicting the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and the 2022 Electoral Act, which delineate the roles and powers of political parties and electoral bodies.

The council emphasized its intention to challenge the law in court, citing the Supreme Court’s previous rulings against similar legislative overreach.

IPAC also reiterated its long-standing advocacy for the abolition of State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs), arguing that these bodies have consistently failed to conduct free and fair elections.

Advertorial

IPAC called on the Anambra State government to withdraw the law to avoid political instability and legal battles, warning that the new legislation could disrupt the relative peace in the state and set a dangerous precedent for the country’s democracy.

The council further reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic process and ensuring that power remains with the people, not through backdoor legislative maneuvers.

CAC Seeks AGF’s Permission To Prosecute Unregistered Entities

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has formally requested permission from the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, to initiate legal proceedings against unregistered organizations, including the Nigerian Law Society, and other entities failing to meet registration requirements in Nigeria.

Advertorial

In a letter dated August 15, 2024, the CAC’s Registrar General, Hussain Magaji, appealed to the AGF for consent to prosecute, highlighting a pressing need to tackle fraud and forgery in corporate operations.

The request underscores violations of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) No. 3 of 2020, which mandates that all businesses and organizations disclose their directors, trustees, and official addresses.

Advertorial

Magaji’s letter specifically refers to Section 863 (2) of CAMA 2020, which obliges entities like the Nigerian Law Society to complete their registration with the CAC before starting their activities.

The letter, titled “Request for Fiat or Consent to Exercise Prosecutorial Powers of the Attorney General of the Federation under Section 174 of the 1999 Constitution, Pursuant to Section 104 (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015,” seeks extensive prosecutorial authority to address breaches of CAMA 2020.

The CAC’s initiative aims to curb the rising incidence of corporate malpractice, including forgery and fraud.

Advertorial

Magaji’s request includes specific consent to prosecute the trustees of the Nigerian Law Society for operating without proper registration, a breach of CAMA 2020.

The CAC, as the primary body responsible for business and corporate entity registration and regulation in Nigeria, has attached evidence of these violations to the letter for the AGF’s review, reaffirming its commitment to enforcing corporate compliance and seeking the AGF’s approval to enhance its regulatory capabilities.

N90bn Hajj Fraud: NAHCON Chairman, Secretary Still In EFCC Custody

The Executive Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Jalal Arabi, and the commission’s Secretary, Abdullahi Kontagora, are currently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of mismanagement of the N90 billion 2024 Hajj subsidy, according to sources.

Available documents on Wednesday revealed that the EFCC recovered a total of SR314,098 (Saudi Riyal) from Arabi and other top officials of the commission.

Advertorial

The anti-graft agency’s investigation suggests that Arabi and others fraudulently overpaid themselves and others from the Hajj subsidy funds.

The approved 2024 Hajj operational costs for various officials were $4,250 for the Chairman/CEO, $12,750 for Commissioners, $3,825 for the Secretary, and $15,300 for Directors/Chief of Staff.

However, the EFCC alleges that the Chairman received SR50,000 instead of his entitled SR15,929, and other officials similarly received inflated amounts.

Advertorial

The EFCC first interrogated Arabi on July 29 and released him on bail, but he was brought in again for questioning and detained on Wednesday.

According to a source within the EFCC, both the Chairman and Secretary of NAHCON are under intense scrutiny regarding the N90 billion subsidy, among other allegations.

Additionally, an exclusive document revealed that SR8,614,175.27 in cash withdrawals from the N90 billion subsidy remains unaccounted for by NAHCON.

Advertorial

The document outlined how the subsidy was converted into Saudi Riyal and deposited into a British SAAB Account in Saudi Arabia.

Significant withdrawals were made during the 2024 Hajj operations, but discrepancies in the expected cash payments have raised suspicions.

Further investigations into the commission’s activities since 2022 led to the recovery of estacodes paid to staff who did not undertake study tours and payments made to Shuraka’a al-Khair Group Ltd for services that were never rendered.

It was also revealed that supporting documents for consultancy payments were backdated to facilitate fraudulent transactions.

Jalal Arabi reportedly admitted that the consultant did not render any services, and the EFCC recovered SR1,026,000.00, equivalent to about N430,920,000, from a company in Saudi Arabia related to these dubious payments. The commission’s Secretary was implicated in altering meeting minutes to justify these payments.

The EFCC is continuing its investigation into the matter, as the full extent of the alleged financial misconduct at NAHCON is yet to be determined.

Push For Additional State Creation In Southeast ‘Political Grandstanding’ – Chekwas Okorie

Chekwas Okorie, the founder of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and its current Board of Trustees Chairman, has labeled the recent calls for the creation of Anioma, Orlu, and Etiti states in the Southeast as legitimate but dismissed them as mere political grandstanding given the substantial challenges posed by the 1999 Nigerian Constitution (as amended).

He pointed out that these constitutional hurdles make such state creation efforts more symbolic than practical.

Advertorial

Okorie also addressed the ongoing violence in the Southeast, characterizing the killings as largely self-inflicted and unfortunate.

He noted that the governors of the Southeast are forced to divert scarce resources that could be used for development toward combating the scourge of killings and kidnappings in the region.

He called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to strengthen collaboration with the Southeast governors to effectively tackle the criminal activities plaguing the area.

Advertorial

Okorie expressed confidence that President Tinubu could make significant progress by using his constitutional authority to instruct the Minister of Justice to enter a nolle prosequi in the case of Nnamdi Kanu and other Igbo activists detained for advocating for the self-determination of their people.

He believes that unconditional release of Kanu would go a long way toward resolving the insecurity and unrest in the Southeast.

Regarding the “Igbo-Must-Go” campaign in Lagos, Okorie expressed relief that many Nigerians across all levels of society have condemned the inciting and provocative call by unpatriotic elements for the Igbo to leave Lagos.

Advertorial

However, he criticized the federal and Lagos State governments for their tepid response to the threats, suggesting that their actions—or lack thereof—indicate a degree of complicity or tolerance.

Okorie specifically questioned why President Tinubu has not called for the resignation of his aide, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, who made controversial statements on social media. He also expressed dissatisfaction with what he described as the weak condemnation of the offensive tweets by those behind the “Lagospedia” campaign, asserting that the Lagos State government should have apprehended and prosecuted the perpetrators to send a strong message of deterrence.

Kamala Harris Outlines Vision For Economy Amid Rising Voter Trust, Trump Falters On Policy

Vice President Kamala Harris is set to unveil her economic strategy in her first major policy address as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee.

In her speech on Friday, Harris will tackle the issue of companies that are unfairly raising prices, a significant move as she outlines her vision for the U.S. economy.

Advertorial

Harris ascended to the top of the Democratic ticket last month, replacing President Joe Biden amid growing concerns about his ability to lead.

Her candidacy has been met with increasing support, bolstered by recent economic reports indicating that inflation is easing.

For the first time in this election cycle, a University of Michigan poll shows that more Americans trust Harris to manage the economy than her Republican opponent, Donald Trump.

Advertorial

Despite this momentum, Harris faces pressure to clearly define her platform with the Democratic National Convention just around the corner.

While she has hinted at various policy initiatives, she has yet to present a detailed governing plan, often framing her campaign in broader terms as a “fight for the future.”

Critics, including a recent editorial from the conservative Wall Street Journal, argue that Harris needs to articulate a specific agenda to gain the political capital necessary for governing.

Advertorial

Her initial economic proposal — not taxing tips — was met with skepticism, with some Democrats dismissing it as a populist move reminiscent of a similar idea previously floated by Trump.

However, Harris found more solid ground on Thursday by advocating for lower medication costs for seniors and participating in her first public event alongside Biden since replacing him as the nominee.

This appearance aimed to reinforce their continued alliance, even as Harris begins to carve out her own path.

Advertorial

In her speech in Raleigh, North Carolina, Harris is expected to call on Congress to pass a federal ban on “price-gouging,” with specific penalties for food companies that unfairly raise prices.

This move is part of her broader strategy to differentiate herself from Trump, whose proposed tariffs on imports could, she argues, increase the cost of essential goods.

Advisers are divided on how Harris should proceed, with some suggesting that she maintain a broad, enthusiasm-driven campaign without getting bogged down in detailed policy debates.

Advertorial

Others believe she should distance herself from Biden, whose economic approval ratings have been lackluster, though their joint appearance suggests a united front.

Harris has embraced much of Biden’s economic agenda, including the commitment to eliminate “junk fees” and reduce prescription drug and housing costs, all while adhering to his promise not to raise taxes on those earning less than $400,000 annually.

On Friday, Harris is also expected to introduce a comprehensive plan to address America’s housing crisis.

This four-year initiative aims to lower housing costs for working families by constructing three million new housing units during her first term, providing tax incentives for builders of starter homes and rental properties, and confronting corporate landlords who exploit renters.

Meanwhile, Trump continues to struggle to stay on message, frequently diverting his speeches to personal attacks on Harris. His latest remarks in North Carolina, which were supposed to focus on his economic platform, instead featured a series of insults and a downplaying of the economy as a key election issue, further underscoring the stark contrast between the two candidates’ approaches as the election nears.

Kano Court Vandalized, Key Documents In Ganduje Corruption Case Stolen

The Kano State government has reported that documents related to the corruption trial of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje were stolen by protesters who invaded the State High Court during a recent nationwide demonstration.

The court was among several properties damaged and looted by hoodlums during the #EndBadGovernance protest.

Advertorial

The trial involves Ganduje, his wife Hafsat, his son Umar Abdullahi, and five others, who face eight charges of misappropriation and diversion of funds during Ganduje’s eight-year tenure as governor.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf visited the court on Wednesday to assess the extent of the damage.

He was accompanied by the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Barrister Haruna Isah Dederi, Chief Registrar of the High Court, Alhaji Abdullahi Ado Bayero, and several judges.

Advertorial

The governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, stated that Yusuf described the vandalism as a deliberate act orchestrated by enemies of the state.

The miscreants, he said, were hired to disrupt the corruption trial of Ganduje, who is also the Acting National Chairman of the APC.

“It is very unfortunate that enemies of Kano State hired undesirable elements to vandalize one of the historic public buildings with the aim of averting corruption charges against Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his family, and aides,” Tofa said in a statement.

Advertorial

The statement further revealed that the vandals caused significant damage to the High Court, including the office of the state Chief Judge, resulting in losses exceeding N1 billion.

The damage included the theft of office equipment, destruction of offices, burning of vehicles, and the loss of crucial materials necessary for the dispensation of justice.

Governor Yusuf urged the youth of Kano State to avoid being used by detractors to engage in violence, advising them to focus instead on acquiring skills for a better future.

Advertorial

He assured that the government would continue to prioritize the security of lives and property in the state.

Yusuf also expressed sympathy to Chief Judge Dije Abdu Aboki and the entire judiciary for the incident, encouraging them to recover what was lost to ensure justice for the people.

He thanked the people of Kano for their support of the current administration and prayed for continued peace, stability, and economic development in the state.

Sudan Army Boycotts US-Led Talks In Switzerland As Civil War Rages

US-led talks on Sudan’s ongoing civil war began in Switzerland on Wednesday, focusing on humanitarian aid for millions of people facing severe hunger and displacement due to the conflict.

However, the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) declined the invitation to participate, leaving only the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) at the negotiating table.

Advertorial

The conflict, which has pitted the army against the paramilitary RSF since April 2023, continues to devastate the country.

US Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, expressed the urgency of the situation, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities to allow for humanitarian assistance.

“The world is watching,” Perriello emphasized on X, highlighting the importance of adhering to international humanitarian law.

Advertorial

He noted that the RSF had arrived in Switzerland, but the SAF’s absence was a significant setback.

The talks, which involve international partners, technical experts, and Sudanese civil society, aim to establish a truce to facilitate the delivery of much-needed aid.

However, discussions on Sudan’s political future are not on the agenda.

Advertorial

The situation in Sudan, particularly in the North Darfur region, is dire, with experts warning of a famine that has already claimed lives.

The United Nations describes it as the world’s largest refugee crisis, with more than 25 million people at risk of hunger.

Many areas remain inaccessible to aid workers due to ongoing fighting, further complicating relief efforts.

Advertorial

Representatives from the RSF, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the African Union, and the United Nations have convened in Switzerland, though the exact location remains undisclosed for security reasons.

The conflict has displaced over 10 million people within Sudan, with others fleeing to neighboring countries.

The UN reports that both sides of the conflict are hindering access to aid convoys, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

Advertorial

Additionally, the UN’s fundraising efforts for Sudan have fallen short, with only a third of the required $2.7 billion secured.

The German charity Welthungerhilfe has called for the establishment of humanitarian corridors to address the worsening famine.

Secretary General Matthias Mogge described the crisis in Sudan as the world’s most severe, with more than 25 million people facing critical food shortages and nearly 755,000 at acute risk of starvation.

Advertorial

The UN estimates that at least 100 people die from hunger every day in Sudan, with 30% of children suffering from acute malnutrition.

The situation has been further aggravated by heavy rains and flooding, which have destroyed homes and infrastructure, forcing tens of thousands more to flee their homes.
