BREAKING: Tribunal Imposes N150m Fine On Multichoice, Orders Free Month Of DStv and GOtv Subscriptions

A significant ruling was handed down by the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal, chaired by Justice Thomas Okosu, imposing a N150 million fine on Multichoice Nigeria.

The tribunal also mandated that Multichoice offer one month of free subscriptions to its DStv and GOtv customers.

Advertorial

The case was initiated by lawyer Festus Onifade, who challenged Multichoice’s decision to increase subscription rates for DStv and GOtv services starting May 1, 2024.

The tribunal had previously issued an order preventing the implementation of these new rates pending further hearings.

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) accused Multichoice of increasing fees without giving customers a one-month notice, arguing this move violated consumer protection laws.

Multichoice contested the tribunal’s authority, asserting that price regulation falls under the jurisdiction of the President of Nigeria.

However, Justice Okosu, leading a three-member panel, cited Section 39(2) of the FCCPC Act, affirming that the tribunal has nationwide jurisdiction over all profit-driven commercial activities.

Justice Okosu concluded that the tribunal is empowered to oversee consumer rights issues in this matter, rejecting Multichoice’s jurisdictional challenge.

The tribunal criticized Multichoice for defying its previous orders by raising prices, leading to the imposition of the hefty fine and the directive for free subscriptions.

Bill To Create Additional State In Southeast Passes First Reading

The House of Representatives has made a notable move towards the creation of Orlu State from the current Imo State, with a bill supporting the new state’s formation passing its first reading.

This legislative effort is spearheaded by Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, representing Ideato North/South federal constituency, alongside 15 other legislators.

Advertorial

Following the bill’s initial reading, Ugochinyere released a statement lauding the progress as a testament to the South-East’s commitment to a more promising future.

He underscored the historical disparities faced by the South-East, noting that it currently has fewer states compared to other geo-political zones in Nigeria.

Ugochinyere expressed optimism that the establishment of Orlu State, with Orlu city as its capital, would stimulate significant economic and socio-political advancements in the region.

Advertorial

The proposed state aims to create new senatorial zones that incorporate areas from the present Imo, Abia, and Anambra States, with Ideato Federal Constituency envisioned as one of these new zones.

This restructuring is expected to enhance regional unity and drive collective progress.

The bill’s implications extend beyond administrative changes, promising a transformative impact on the region’s economic landscape.

Ugochinyere argued that by creating new local government areas and splitting federal constituencies, the region’s untapped potential could be fully harnessed, fostering growth, innovation, and opportunities for future generations.

Advertorial

Politically, the creation of Orlu State would enhance the South-East’s representation, giving its people a stronger voice to advocate for their interests within a dedicated state government.

This move is seen as a crucial step towards addressing the long-standing issue of political marginalization in the region.

Ugochinyere credited his colleagues in the House for their unwavering support, which has been instrumental in advancing the bill.

He also acknowledged the numerous individuals and organizations backing the initiative, reflecting widespread solidarity with the people of Orlu.

Advertorial

Despite this initial success, Ugochinyere emphasized that the journey is far from complete.

He called for sustained public support as the bill undergoes further legislative scrutiny. He encouraged supporters to remain steadfast, highlighting that the dream of Orlu State is within reach through collective effort.

Ugochinyere concluded by urging continued advocacy and engagement, stressing the significance of this milestone and the critical work ahead.

The upcoming weeks will be pivotal as the bill navigates the legislative process, with public and governmental support being essential to realize the vision of Orlu State.

Ozekhome: El-Rufai Entitled To Fair Hearing In Corruption Probe

Human rights lawyer Mike Ozekhome has emphasized the importance of a fair hearing for former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, who is facing corruption allegations.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, Ozekhome insisted that El-Rufai must be allowed to defend himself against the charges brought by a Kaduna House of Assembly committee.

Advertorial

The committee had indicted El-Rufai on corruption charges and made several recommendations.

However, Ozekhome argued that while the committee had fulfilled its duties, it is crucial for El-Rufai to be given an opportunity to respond to the allegations.

“I’m not a Nostradamus, the man who saw tomorrow, nor am I the oracle at Ile Ife [in Osun State] that will go gaze into the future to pronounce it the next Ooni need to be. So, I wouldn’t be able to know what the outcome would be,”

“But I think that whatever happens, El-Rufai must be given his right to a fair hearing. The assembly has just merely made a recommendation and told the governor to implement it. The governor may look at it and, and feel well, ‘This is not worth the energy at the time. Let’s face other [things]’. Others may say, ‘N423 billion they are accusing him of is not a small amount; let’s dig in.” He added.

Ozekhome highlighted that El-Rufai has fundamental rights to protect and could challenge the indictment in court if he feels he was not given a fair trial.

He questioned whether El-Rufai was duly invited to defend himself, noting, “Was he duly invited? Was he given an opportunity to defend himself? If he was and he chose to stay back, that’s another ball game.”

The human rights lawyer noted that indictments, especially those with criminal implications, cannot be done by proxy and must involve the individual directly.

All their children are now on scholarship and they will remain on scholarship until they graduate from the university. We will also keep supporting the widows to ensure that they do not lack anything,” Otti declared.

The governor reiterated his appeal to the Army to conduct their investigation with care, acknowledging that some of those arrested might be innocent.

He emphasized the need to respect the rights of civilians during the investigation process.

He urged for thorough investigations that respect the rights of innocent citizens, cautioning against punishing those not involved in the crime.
