Plateau Pensioners Revived As Governor Clears Benefits Dating Back To 1986

After decades of waiting, retired public servants in Plateau State are finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel as Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s administration releases long-overdue pension benefits dating back to 1986.

For many retirees, the hope of ever receiving their entitlements had dwindled over the years, with some enduring meager pension payments as low as N5,000.    Advertorial

Previous attempts to secure their dues, even amidst salary increments for active workers, had yielded little progress.

Governor Mutfwang’s commitment to inclusive governance and fulfilling obligations to citizens brought renewed optimism.

Upon assuming office, he swiftly cleared a backlog of salaries owed to striking workers and fostered improved government-labor relations through collaborative retreats.

Additionally, Hazard Allowances for medical professionals were raised, and civil servants received a boost with the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage and a N12,000 fuel subsidy removal palliative.

Under the governor’s leadership, essential support measures were extended, including overhead payments to Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, restoration of electricity to the State Secretariat, and distribution of palliatives such as rice, maize, and fertilizer to alleviate economic hardships.

The State Head of Civil Service, Mrs. Rauta Dakok, confirmed the monthly release of Three Hundred Million Naira (N300,000,000.00) towards settling pension arrears and death benefits.

She also announced the upward review of minimum monthly pensions to N20,000 effective from January 2024, signaling a significant improvement in retirees’ financial security.

Mr. Ben Bello, the State Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners, lauded Governor Mutfwang’s administration for its proactive approach to addressing pensioners’ concerns.

With payments clearing arrears up to 2009 and ongoing efforts to resolve outstanding cases, pensioners expressed gratitude for the governor’s commitment to their welfare and timely salary payments.

As retirees finally receive their long-awaited benefits, Governor Mutfwang’s administration earns praise for its tangible efforts to alleviate the plight of pensioners and uphold the dignity of public service.

Nigeria Slashes Power Exports To Benin Republic, Togo, Niger To Prioritize Domestic Supply

In a bid to bolster the country’s domestic power supply, the Nigerian government has taken measures to limit electricity sales to neighboring countries including Benin Republic, Togo, and Niger.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has instructed the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s System Operator (SO) to cap power supply to these three neighboring nations at six percent.

Advertorial

This directive, effective from May 1, 2024, for a duration of six months, aims to address concerns about sub-optimal grid dispatch practices that have adversely affected the ability of Distribution Companies (DisCos) to meet their service tariff commitments to end-users.

The decision, outlined in an order titled ‘Interim Order on Transmission System Dispatch Operations, Cross-border Supply, and Related Matters,’ was jointly signed by the Chairman of NERC, Sanusi Garba, and Vice Chairman, Musiliu Oseni.

NERC emphasized the need to enhance transparency and fairness in grid operations, highlighting the imbalance caused by prioritizing international off-takers and Eligible Customers over domestic obligations. Many off-takers contracted bilaterally by Generation Companies (GenCos) have been found to exceed their contracted levels during peak operations without facing penalties.

To address these challenges, NERC’s order mandates the development and implementation of a pro-rata load-shedding scheme to ensure equitable load allocation to all off-takers during generation drops or grid imbalances.

The system operator is required to enforce penalties for violations of grid instructions and contracted nominations, while also limiting the aggregate capacity nominated by generating plants to international off-takers.

Furthermore, NERC has directed the installation of integrated Internet of Things (IoT) meters at all off-take and delivery points to provide real-time visibility of aggregate offtake by grid customers.

This initiative aims to enhance monitoring and ensure compliance with regulations governing electricity distribution and exports.
