Ghanaian authorities have charged Kwabena Adu-Boahene, a former director of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), with diverting millions of dollars from a cybersecurity contract, according to a court document obtained by AFP.

Prosecutors allege that Adu-Boahene misappropriated funds from a $7 million contract meant for a cybersecurity defense system, using the money to acquire properties in Accra, Kumasi, and London, as well as a fleet of luxury vehicles.

The charges include theft, money laundering, and the unlawful diversion of public funds.

“No cybersecurity system of the description in the January 30, 2020 contract was ever received by the Bureau of National Communications or by its successor agency,” the court filing noted.

Adu-Boahene was arrested on March 24 along with his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, who is also facing charges.

According to Attorney General Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, investigators discovered an additional fraudulent scheme involving funds from the Ghana Water Company.

Speaking at a press conference, Ayine revealed: “Every two weeks, some $46,000 left a Ghana Water account intended for a National Signals Bureau account but instead went to an account controlled by Adu Boahene and his wife.”

The case is part of a broader anti-corruption initiative led by President John Mahama, who assumed office in January.

His administration has pledged to recover public funds allegedly misused during the tenure of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Officials have also launched investigations into other former government figures, including ex-finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta, as part of the renewed accountability drive.
