Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Friday facilitated the release of eight women from the Goron-Dutse Correctional Centre, including two pregnant women and two nursing mothers, by settling their fines and compensation requirements.
The development was confirmed in a press statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Tofa.
The release occurred during the governor’s unannounced visit to the correctional facility, where he was accompanied by several key government officials.
According to the statement, the purpose of the visit was to evaluate the inmates’ living conditions and explore how the state could improve their welfare and rehabilitation.
Governor Yusuf pledged his government’s commitment to upgrading prison infrastructure and ensuring the gradual release of inmates detained for minor infractions.
During the visit, he also highlighted a pressing issue: the backlog of pre-trial detainees.
“I assure you that the state government will work with the judiciary to accelerate the dispensation of justice and ease congestion in correctional centres,” the governor said.
He went on to offer words of encouragement to the inmates: “I also urged you to remain hopeful and view their current situation as a test of fate. He encouraged them to embrace positive change in anticipation of their eventual reintegration into society.”
To immediately improve living conditions, Yusuf ordered the provision of cows, food items, mattresses, blankets, and beverages for the inmates.
In a related effort, the governor also visited the Janguza Maximum Security Correctional Facility, where he announced plans to transfer inmates from the overcrowded Kurmawa Correctional Centre to Janguza.
He praised the state of the Janguza facility, describing its infrastructure and general condition as satisfactory.
Governor Yusuf urged physically capable inmates to reflect on their past and make positive changes.
He also acknowledged the contributions of former Minister of Interior, General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (Rtd.), in making the Janguza facility a reality.
Reaffirming his administration’s objectives, the governor said his government remains focused on “facilitating the release of eligible inmates, supporting students to return to school, and empowering others through vocational training.”
Inmates across both facilities reportedly expressed heartfelt appreciation for the governor’s visit and his proactive measures to improve their lives behind bars.
