The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a man, Alexander Peter, for allegedly killing his 71-year-old mother, Mrs. Atiny Peter, in a gruesome machete attack.
The tragic incident occurred in Ikot Inyang village, Oruk Anam Local Government Area of the state.
Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday at the police headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, confirmed the arrest and revealed that investigations are ongoing.
“The gruesome incident occurred in Ikot Inyang Village, Oruk Anam Local Government Area, where the suspect reportedly used the machete to hack his mother to death,” Azare said.
He added that the suspect was apprehended on June 10 and that efforts are underway to determine what led to the attack.
“The command is working to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the motive behind the heinous crime,” the commissioner added.
Meanwhile, the Police Commissioner also disclosed broader security developments across the state.
He noted that 54 individuals had been arrested over the past six weeks for various crimes, and that law enforcement officers recovered over 50 arms and rounds of ammunition during the period.
