JAMB Issues Warning On 2024 UTME Result Slips

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has raised a red flag regarding the authenticity of printed result slips for the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

Contrary to circulating claims, JAMB clarified that the results are currently unavailable in paper format and cannot be accessed via its website.

Advertorial

According to Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s spokesperson, candidates can only check their 2024 UTME results by sending UTMERESULT to 55019 or 66019 using the phone number used during registration.

It emphasized that the SIM card should not be on any data bundle during the process.

Unlike the previous year, where results were accessible on the Board’s website, this year’s results follow a different retrieval process.

JAMB urges candidates to refrain from visiting cybercafes or engaging third-party services for result verification.

Moreover, the public is cautioned against candidates presenting printed result slips, as the current results are not available in paper format.

A substantial number of candidates have successfully accessed their results through the prescribed method.

Earlier in the week, JAMB announced the release of the 2024 UTME results during a press briefing. Out of the total registered candidates, which numbered 1,904,109, 80,810 were absent from the examination.

Additionally, 64,624 results are under scrutiny for various reasons, including verification, procedural investigations, and suspected exam misconduct.

Center-based investigations involving 57,056 candidates across 18 centers nationwide are also underway.

PDP Group Considers Working Against Party In Edo Governorship Election

A faction within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, known as the Legacy group, has issued a stern warning, declaring their intention to oppose the party in the upcoming governorship election if their grievances remain unaddressed.

Advertorial

Led by PDP National Vice Chairman, South-South, Chief Dan Orbih, the Legacy group demanded the reversal of the appointment of the new Deputy Governor, whom they identified as a member of the Labour Party.

Addressing attendees at the Edo Central PDP Leaders/Stakeholders’ Meeting held in Irrua, Edo, Orbih emphasized the urgency for the governor to resolve the grievances of the PDP Legacy group if the party aims to present a united front in the next governorship election.

Orbih highlighted widespread dissatisfaction among PDP members in Edo State regarding the state of the party and the performance of the Godwin Obaseki-led government.

He alleged that the administration had failed to prioritize the interests of the people.

Asserting the group’s commitment to Edo’s future, Orbih stated that their support in the upcoming election would be contingent upon the candidate’s ability to address pressing issues and foster inclusivity, regardless of party affiliation.

Commending the efforts of the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, in advocating for the repair of the dilapidated Benin-Auchi Road, Orbih emphasized that the focus should be on candidates who demonstrate a genuine concern for Edo’s welfare.

The meeting, according to Orbih, served as a clear message to the PDP leadership at both state and national levels, urging them to rectify what the Legacy group perceives as unjust treatment of its members in Edo or face opposition.

Former Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, echoed sentiments of discontent, stating that the PDP’s chosen candidate lacked local acceptance, deeming him “not a homeboy.”

Similarly, former House Representative member for Oredo Federal Constituency, Hon. Ogbeide Ihama, voiced opposition to the imposition of a candidate from Lagos, underscoring the Legacy PDP’s rejection of external influences in Edo’s governance.

‘Waste Of Time’ – NLC Dismisses 35% Salary Increase On Worker’s Day

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has rejected the federal government’s approval of a 25 to 35 per cent pay rise for civil servants across various salary structures.

The announcement, made by the Head of Press at the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC), Emmanuel Njoku, was intended to coincide with the annual celebration of Labour Day, a global tribute to the labor movement’s achievements.

Advertorial

The pay increase, effective from January 1, 2024, was issued ahead of the report submission from the tripartite committee on the national minimum wage, chaired by Bukar Goni Aji, a former Head of Civil Service of the Federation.

However, the NLC dismissed the announcement as “a waste of time,” with Assistant General Secretary Chris Onyeka asserting that the commission lacks the authority to determine the national minimum wage.

Advertorial

Meanwhile, the NSIWC clarified that the salary augmentation applies to six consolidated salary structures, including those for public service, research institutions, police, paramilitary, intelligence community, and armed forces.

Additionally, pension increases ranging from 20% to 28% were approved for pensioners enrolled in the Defined Benefits Scheme within these salary structures.

Despite the government’s attempt to address worker concerns, tensions remain high as workers and union leaders express dissatisfaction with the current wage structure. In various states across Nigeria, labor leaders have called for the implementation of a living wage, emphasizing the challenges posed by rising living costs, especially following the removal of fuel subsidies.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s assent to the N30,000 minimum wage bill in 2019 marked a significant milestone for workers nationwide.

However, its full implementation at the state level remains a challenge, with many states yet to adopt the new wage structure.

As workers await concrete action from the government, labor unions continue to advocate for fair wages and improved living conditions.

Despite the ongoing negotiations, the outcome remains uncertain, raising concerns about the government’s commitment to addressing the plight of the Nigerian worker.

PDP BOT Member Resigns From Party

Charles Idahosa, a prominent figure within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the representative of the South-South region in the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), has announced his resignation from the party.

Idahosa’s decision to step down from his position within the PDP comes amidst growing discord between him and Governor Godwin Obaseki.

Advertorial

While citing the pursuit of new opportunities beyond the confines of the party as his reason for departure, it’s evident that his relationship with Governor Obaseki has soured over time. Idahosa has openly criticized the governor’s leadership style, accusing him of neglecting those who supported his reelection bid in 2020.

Notably, Idahosa was among the earliest voices to denounce the disqualification of Governor Obaseki by the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that led to his fallout with the former governor of Edo State and the then National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

Having served as Political Adviser to Oshiomhole during his eight-year tenure as governor, Idahosa’s departure from the APC alongside Governor Obaseki marked a significant shift in Edo’s political landscape.

In his resignation letter addressed to his Ward 1 in Ehor, Uhunmwode local government chairman, and circulated to key party officials including the Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees (BoT), South-South National Vice Chairman, Edo State PDP Chairman, and PDP Chairman of Uhunmwode Local Government area, Idahosa expressed his decision to part ways with the party, signaling a new chapter in his political journey.

“I trust this letter finds you well. I am reaching out to formally announce my decision to resign from both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and my role as a member of the Board of Trustees (BoT). As a representative of the South-South Nigerian region, this decision comes after considerable contemplation and reflection on my personal and political journey.”

“Throughout my tenure within the Peoples Democratic Party, I have been privileged to contribute to its vision and mission. However, after careful consideration, I believe it is time for me to pursue new paths and opportunities beyond the party’s confines.

“I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the PDP community for their unwavering support and camaraderie during my time of service.

“I remain committed to upholding the values and principles that have guided my political engagement thus far. I look forward to new avenues of growth and contribution, and I extend my best wishes to the Peoples Democratic Party as it continues its important work.”
