Equatorial Guinea Official Dismissed Over Sex Scandal

Equatorial Guinea’s President, Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, has dismissed Baltasar Engonga, the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), following a sex scandal that has shocked the nation.

Engonga, a 54-year-old economist, was removed from his position and replaced by Zenón Obiang Obiang Avomo, according to reports from local news outlets Ahora EG and Real Equatorial Guinea.

The dismissal is linked to a range of serious allegations, including Engonga’s involvement in an illicit scheme where he secretly filmed explicit videos with the wives of high-ranking officials.

According to Ahora EG, the scandal came to light during a fraud investigation, which led authorities to raid Engonga’s office and home.

During the search, investigators uncovered more than 400 videos, some of which allegedly feature prominent women, such as the President’s sister, the wife of the Inspector General of Police, and several wives of ministers in the government.

The footage was reportedly recorded with the consent of the women involved, though it has since been leaked, causing a media frenzy.

In addition to the explicit content, Engonga’s conduct was also deemed inappropriate for someone holding a public office, leading to his dismissal as outlined in Decree number 118/2024, issued on November 4.

The case has drawn widespread attention in Equatorial Guinea, with many describing it as one of the most shocking scandals to ever emerge in the country.

“America Has Disgraced Itself by Electing Trump; The World Is Disappointed” – Prof. Akinyemi Warns of Global Instability

Prominent Nigerian political scientist, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, has expressed disappointment in the United States’ decision to elect Donald Trump as president, claiming that it has let down the rest of the world.

Speaking during an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Akinyemi criticized the American electorate for choosing Trump, describing it as a “low point” for the country.

Trump, who secured victory over Vice President Kamala Harris after President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, has drawn significant global scrutiny.

Akinyemi voiced concerns about Trump’s foreign policy, particularly regarding his strong alliances with Russia and Israel, warning that nations like Ukraine and Palestine could face greater challenges under his leadership.

“Look at how far America has fallen. It has disgraced itself,” Akinyemi said.

“The world is disappointed by the decision it made last night.”

He also expressed concern about the potential consequences of Trump’s rhetoric becoming reality.

Akinyemi suggested that Trump could take drastic actions, such as sending U.S. troops to target America’s perceived enemies and ramping up deportations of immigrants, with severe consequences for those who return.

He also referenced the controversial Guantanamo Bay detention center, noting that while previous Democratic administrations, including Biden’s, had sought to shut it down, Republican opposition has kept it open.

Anambra: Litigants Protest Ongoing Closure of Federal High Court Over Simon Ekpa’s Threat

Litigants in Anambra State have expressed frustration over the continued closure of the Federal High Court in Awka, which has remained shut since Tuesday, November 5, 2024.

The closure is reportedly in response to a renewed threat from Simon Ekpa, the leader of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRIGE), who demanded that the Federal Government release all detained Biafrans to the Southeast or face further disruptions, including the closure of courts across the region.

Several litigants, some of whom have experienced multiple adjournments due to previous judge transfers, voiced their dismay at the continuing delays.

They argued that, despite the recent appointment of new judges in Anambra, court operations have been stalled by the threat, leaving many cases in limbo.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, some litigants criticized the judiciary staff and other civil servants, alleging that they often use such situations as an excuse to avoid work.

While acknowledging that judges and lawyers are ready to proceed with hearings, they pointed out that the absence of court staff has hindered progress.

One litigant called the situation “unacceptable,” highlighting the irony that the state capital, which houses both the state police command and the seat of government, remains paralyzed by an external threat.

Chief Sylvanus, one of the frustrated litigants, said he was unaware of any new ultimatum issued by Ekpa, noting that the previous deadline had ended on October 27, 2024.

Another anonymous litigant questioned why a threat originating from Finland would be able to shut down courts in Nigeria, calling for greater security measures to ensure that court operations continue unaffected by external influences.

“Has Anambra State really become so lawless that an online threat can bring everything to a halt?” one litigant asked.

“Why isn’t the police stepping in to provide protection for the court and citizens?”

The litigants also noted that Federal High Courts in other Southeastern states, including Imo, Enugu, Abia, and Ebonyi, continue to operate without disruptions.

They expressed disappointment that Awka, the state capital, is the only one affected, calling the closure a “humiliation” for both the state and federal governments.

“This is an attack on the people of Anambra State,” one litigant stated.

“Thousands of cases are delayed, many of them involving people whose freedom or livelihood is at stake. The holiday season is approaching, and people who could be freed from detention remain locked up, while others wait for justice in cases affecting public welfare.”

They urged both federal and state authorities to take immediate action to secure the court and resume legal proceedings, emphasizing the need for swift action to prevent further disruptions to justice in the region.

Individuals Behind My Death Rumors Are Jealous of The Ovation I Received At Iwuanyanwu’s Burial – Okorocha

Senator Rochas Okorocha, former Governor of Imo State, has responded to recent rumors claiming he had passed away, dismissing the reports as malicious and born out of jealousy.

The rumors, which circulated on November 6, 2024, falsely claimed that Okorocha had died in a London hospital from a fabricated illness described as “acute gorilla.”

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, Okorocha clarified that he was alive and in good health.

“He had been in Owerri attending the burial of the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, and had no health issues.”

The statement emphasized that Okorocha had been active, attending public events and services, including one in Abuja in honor of notable Igbos, such as Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu.

The statement expressed disappointment at the spread of the rumors and attributed the false reports to envy over the warm reception Okorocha had received during the burial ceremony.

Okorocha’s supporters had given him significant applause and ovation during the event, which the former governor believes triggered the unfounded rumors.

“To all well-meaning Nigerians, the news of Rochas Okorocha’s death is false. He is alive, healthy, and continues to engage in his normal activities.”

The statement went on to criticize the individuals behind the rumors, describing them as “spiritually dead” and suggesting that they were upset over Okorocha’s recognition at the burial.

Okorocha, however, refrained from responding with anger, instead offering prayers for the individuals responsible.

“We do not curse those whom God has blessed. We pray for their spiritual healing and hope for their repentance and a return to normalcy.”

Okorocha’s spokesperson urged the public to disregard the malicious rumors and focus on the former governor’s ongoing contributions to public life.

Malaysia To Phase Out CNG Vehicles Over Safety Concerns

The Malaysian government has announced plans to phase out compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered vehicles due to safety concerns, marking the end of the sale and registration of such vehicles in the country.

Transport Minister, Loke Siew Fook revealed that new measures would be implemented to halt the use of CNG vehicles, citing the safety risks associated with their gas tanks.

Starting July 1, 2025, no new CNG-powered vehicles will be allowed to be registered in Malaysia. The decision follows concerns over the age and safety of the compressed natural gas (CNG) tanks, which have a typical service life of 15 years.

Loke noted that a significant number of the country’s 44,383 CNG vehicles are nearing the end of their tank lifespan, which poses a potential safety risk, as these vehicles have been involved in accidents leading to explosions.

CNG vehicles currently represent only about 0.2% of the total vehicle population in Malaysia, excluding motorcycles.

The government’s decision to phase out CNG vehicles is part of broader efforts to enhance road safety for the public.

CNG usage in Malaysia began in the late 1990s, but concerns over the safety of the gas tanks have led to this decisive policy change.

Gov. Otti Renames Abia Polytechnic In Honour Of Late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has officially renamed Abia State Polytechnic Aba to Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, in tribute to the late Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the first Executive Governor of the state.

The announcement was made during an interdenominational church service held on Thursday in Umuahia, the state capital, to honour the late statesman.

The polytechnic was established in 1992 under Onu’s leadership, and Governor Otti emphasized that the renaming was a reflection of Onu’s lasting legacy.

He praised Onu for his visionary role in advancing education and creating institutions that contributed to the state’s development.

“Dr. Onu was a leader who understood that true development comes from building strong educational institutions that equip young people with the skills needed to thrive, particularly in the fields of technology, science, education, and agriculture,” Otti remarked during the service.

Otti further highlighted that Onu’s impact went beyond education.

He noted that Onu abolished the divisive indigene/non-indigene policy in Abia’s civil service, thereby fostering a more inclusive environment that enabled citizens based on their skills, not ethnicity, to secure employment.

Under Onu’s administration, Abia experienced significant reforms, including the establishment of the polytechnic and the promotion of educational excellence.

Onu also made history as the first chairman of the Conference of Nigerian Elected Governors, where he played a key role in strengthening the governance body and advancing democratic ideals.

Governor Otti also acknowledged Onu’s pivotal role in the country’s political landscape, particularly during the transition to the Fourth Republic, where he became a major presidential contender.

Otti recalled Onu’s steadfast commitment to national development, democracy, and the well-being of all Nigerians, transcending ethnic and religious divides.

“Dr. Onu was a true patriot and nationalist who always saw beyond sectional interests, believing that every Nigerian had the right to pursue their dreams wherever they chose to live in the country,”

“His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.” Otti added.

22 Miners Feared Dead In Taraba Pit Collapse

At least 22 miners were feared dead after a mining pit collapsed at an illegal mining site in the Gashaka Local Government Area of Taraba State, which borders Toungo Local Government Area in Adamawa State.

The collapse occurred in the Buffa zone of the Gashaka-Gumti National Park, an area known for its gold deposits.

Adamu Jamtare, a miner from the Gashaka region, revealed that many of the victims were from Jamtare town.

“The miners were extracting gold when the pit caved in, trapping all 22 inside. They are presumed to be dead,” he said.

The Chairman of Toungo LGA, Engineer Suleiman Toungo, confirmed the death of five miners, although he was unsure of the exact number still buried under the rubble.

He added that the incident occurred nearly a month ago, with the miners coming from various states including Zamfara and Adamawa.

Despite the presence of rangers in the area, illegal mining activities continue, often carried out secretly during the night.

“So far, five bodies have been recovered, but many others remain trapped,” said Toungo.

The Gashaka-Gumti National Park, known for its rich mineral resources, has seen a rising number of fatalities due to unregulated mining.

A resident of Tila village, who wished to remain anonymous, claimed that around 70 miners lost their lives in similar accidents last year, although these incidents were largely unreported.

The Adamawa Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Yahaya Nguroje, confirmed two recent fatal pit collapses in the region.

In one of the incidents, four miners died, while in another, two were killed and four were injured.

The police are working with officials from the Gumti National Park to track down and arrest those involved in the illegal mining operations.
