The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the transfer of the case involving the killing of a University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) student, Godwin Akpakpan, to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a discreet probe.

Speaking to Channels Television on Monday, Command spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko disclosed that the matter is now under the attention of the SCID and that multiple security agencies are involved in the investigation.

“(The) case has been transferred to SCID for discrete investigation and a panel has been set up by the military with a representative of all service commanders in attendance on the matter,” Iringe-Koko stated.

Akpakpan, a 300-level Computer Science student at UNIPORT, was reportedly shot dead by a security operative in an incident that occurred off-campus, sparking calls for a thorough inquiry.

In response, the University of Port Harcourt released a statement condemning the killing and calling for full accountability.

“The University is actively engaging with relevant security authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.”

“We expect that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that appropriate actions will be taken in line with justice and the rule of law,” said university spokesman Dr. Sam Kpenu.

Describing the deceased as a “bonafide member of our academic community,” the university expressed its grief over the loss and emphasized its commitment to justice.

The university also appealed to its community to remain composed during the ongoing investigation.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues during this very difficult time,” the statement added.

“May the soul of our dearly departed student rest in perfect peace.”

UNIPORT management further assured students and staff of its continued commitment to their safety and welfare as investigations proceed.
